Skanda Sashti, the sixth day in the bright half of the month of Aippasi, is celebrated in Saivite temples all over Tamilnadu, and with an extra measure of grandeur in temples dedicated to Subrahmanya. Skanda Sashti commemorates the destruction of evil by the Supreme General Kartikeya, son of Shiva, and is celebrated with the dramatic enactment of Soora Samhāram.
Mention must be made of the grand celebrations at Tirupparankunram, Tiruchendur, two of the six ‘Padai Veedu’ temples of Murugan. At Sikkal, the festival image of Subramanya receives a spear, from the Ambal shrine, and breaks out in sweat, a day before the climax of the festival. In this article Vijay Raghavan explores the background of this festival.
Skanda: Skanda is an ancient deity mentioned in stone inscriptions and shown on coins (1st cent. to 5th cent CE). The story of Skanda is found among others in the Mahabharatha, Śiva Purana and is retold in Kalidasa’s Kumara Sambhavam. Chandogya Upanishad identifies Skanda as Sanat Kumara. In Tamil, Arunagiri’s Thiruppugazh, Nakkeerar’s Thiru Murugātrupadai, and scores of other literatures praise the glory of Muruga in devotional poetry.
The Story of Skanda Shasti is the story of the birth of Skanda or Kumara and the fulfillment of the purpose of His divine incarnation. "Tormented by the asura (demon/anti God) Tarakasura, the devas with Indra at their head went to the world of the self born the creator"
Lord Brahma the Creator said " only the spark of Shiva can produce the hero who will defeat the powers of the evil" Unfortunately, Shiva The king of yogis was lost in a deep state of meditation and samadhi. None of the Devas dared to disturb him… least of all convince him to create a progeny.
Upon Brahma’s suggestion, they sought the help of Parvathi and Kama (the god of love). Parvathi agreed to help and engaged herself in severe penance to attract Shiva’s attention. Kama also agreed to help and engaged himself in the suicidal mission of arousing Shiva from His state of Samadhi. Kama shot his arrows of love at Shiva who was eventually disturbed and the fire of anger from his third eye burnt Kama into ashes.
The penance of Parvathi and the sacrifice of Kama paid off. Shiva was aroused from his Samadhi. However, none could bear the sparks of His fiery seed. It fell into the mouth of Agni, and afterwards received by Ganges, who in turn threw it into Sara Vana (forest of arrow like grass). Thus Saravanabava was born. He was also Skanda – Shiva’s power of chastity preserved through penance.
Skanda was raised by the six mothers of the divine constellation of Krithikai (pleiades) . Karthikeya divided himself into six babies to be nursed by six mothers. When Parvathi came and gathered all the six babies, He became Shanmukha – the one with the six faces and one body.
Shanmukha became Kumara – the powerful virile adolescent who was also the beautiful and the handsome (Muruga) . He was made the General (Deva Senapathi) of the God’s army. "….Of the army generals I am Skanda."..(The Gita). Skanda received from his mother Parasakthi an all powerful Vel (lance). Hence He is also Sakthi Velan. He engaged the armies of Simhamukha, Surapadman and Tarakasura on a six day battle and vanquished all of them on the sixth day. The Asuras were annihilated and the Devas were liberated. The sixth day (Sashti) of the waxing moon (sukhla) in the month of Ashada (Oct/Nov) is celebrated as Skanda Sashti.
Indra was restored to his kingdom and gave his daughter Deivayanai or Devasena in marriage to Skanda. In order not to discriminate between the rich and the poor, Muruga also married Valli the gypsy damsel.
Skanda Sashti Celebrations
Corresponding to the six days of the war over the evil forces, devotees undertake fasts, prayers and devotional singing to Lord Muruga. Most of the devotees stay in the temples during these six days. In Tiruchendur and Tiruparankundram events leading to the conquest of the Asuras are dramatized and enacted. Offering of Kavadi on Skanda Sashti is a form of popular worship.
According to Swami Śivananda " the Lord spent His childhood in Tiruchendur and took Mahasamadhi at Kathirgamam. If anyone goes to Kathirgamam (Sri Lanka) with faith, devotion and piety, and stays in the temple for two or three days , the Lord Himself grants His vision to the devotee."
Skanda Sashti Kavacham
Skanda Sashti Kavacham or Kanda Sashti Kavasam (Tamil: கந்த சஷ்டி கவசம்) is a song composed in Tamil by Devaraya Swamigal (a student of Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai) on Lord Muruga in the place called Chennimalai near Erode. Lord Muruga, also known as Lord Karthikeya, is a son of Lord Shiva. The Tamil language, which is among the oldest languages spoken in the world, consists of many ancient hymns in praise of deities, and Skanda Sashti Kavasam occupies a popular stature among them though it was composed in the 19th century. In Kanda Sashti Kavasam the author prays to Lord Muruga to shower his grace. It is said that regular chanting of this song causes all the predicaments of life to be resolved, and that chanting the full song 36 times a day will bring Wealth.
It is said that Sashti is the day the Lord Subramanya defeated the demon Soorapadman. When the devas couldn’t tolerate the evil doings of this demon, they approached the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati for his assistance. He fought Soorapadman for six days, at the end of which the Lord vanquished the asura. He threw his weapon at him and Soorapadman was split into two halves. One half became a peacock, which he took as his vaahana. The other became a cock and was transformed into his flag.
The devas, who were tormented by Soorapadman, rejoiced—they praised the Lord and prayed to him for six days. Devotees usually narrate the kanda sashti kavacham during this period. Whoever fasts for these six days of Skanda Sashti and prays to Lord Muruga steadfastly, it is said that they would get the blessings of Lord Muruga. Those who are unable to fast all day for a six-day duration, can eat just one meal during this period.

He was Editor, Zee News, a 24-hour TV News Channel; Executive Editor, The Pioneer; India Editor, Asia Times, a business and political daily published from Bangkok and Singapore; Political Editor, Eenadu Group of Newspapers; and Chief of Bureau, Indian Express, New Delhi. He is also known for his well-researched interventions on national political issues. He is the Founder-Director of the Film and Media School at the Institute of Integrated Learning in Management, New Delhi and Founder-Director of the Pioneer Media School. திருச்செந்தூர் சுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி திருக்கோயிலில் கந்த சஷ்டி சூரசம்ஹார விழா புதன்கிழமை (அக். 29) நடைபெறுகிறது. விழாவைக் காண பக்தர்கள் குவிந்த வண்ணம் உள்ளனர்.
திருச்செந்தூர் சுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி திருக்கோயிலில் நிகழாண்டு கந்த சஷ்டி திருவிழா கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை காலை யாகசாலை பூஜையுடன் தொடங்கியது.
சூரசம்ஹாரம்:கந்த சஷ்டியின் சிகர நிகழ்ச்சியான சூரசம்ஹார விழா புதன்கிழமை நடைபெறுகிறது. விழாவை முன்னிட்டு அதிகாலை 1 மணிக்கு கோயில் நடைதிறக்கப்பட்டு, 1.30 மணிக்கு விஸ்வரூப தரிசனமும், தொடர்ந்து மற்ற கால பூஜைகளும் நடக்கிறது. மாலை 4.30 மணியளவில் திருக்கோயில் கடற்கரையில் கந்த சஷ்டி சூரசம்ஹார விழா நடைபெறுகிறது.
விழாவையொட்டி தமிழகத்தின் பல்வேறு பகுதிகளில் இருந்தும், வெளிமாநிலம் மற்றும் வெளிநாடுகளிலிருந்தும் வந்து பக்தர்கள் விரதம் இருந்து வருகின்றனர். இதனால் திருக்கோயில் வளாகமே பக்தர்கள் கூட்டத்தால் நிரம்பி வழிகின்றது. பக்தர்கள் திருக்கோயில் வளாகத்தில் பக்திப் பாடல்கள் பாடியும், பஜனை பாடியும் வருகின்றனர்.
பாதுகாப்புப் பணியில் மாவட்ட காவல் கண்காணிப்பாளர் துரை தலைமையில், துணை கண்காணிப்பாளர் செü.கோவிந்தராஜ் உள்ளிட்ட காவல்துறையினர், ஊர்க்காவல் படையினர், கடலோரக் காவல்படையினர் தீவிரமாக ஈடுபட்டுள்ளனர். கடற்கரையில் உயர்கோபுரங்கள் அமைக்கப்பட்டும், ரகசிய கேமராக்கள் பொருத்தப்பட்டும் கண்காணிக்கப்படுகிறது. தயார் நிலையில் தீயணைப்பு மற்றும் ஆம்புலன்ஸ் வாகனங்கள் நிறுத்தி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
கடற்கரையில் நடைபெறும் சூரசம்ஹார விழாவைக் காண செல்லும் பக்தர்களுக்கு தனியாக கம்பங்களாலான வரிசைப் பாதை அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
பக்தர்கள் கூட்டத்தைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு பல்வேறு பகுதிகளிலிருந்தும் சிறப்புப் பேருந்துகள் மற்றும் திருநெல்வேலியிலிருந்து சிறப்பு இரயில்கள் இயக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
பக்தர்களுக்கு வாகன அனுமதிச் சீட்டுகள் கொடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. அதன்படி அனுமதிச்சீட்டு உள்ள வாகனங்கள் மட்டுமே தாலுகா அலுவலகச் சாலை அருகிலும், நாழிக்கிணறு பேருந்து நிலையம் அருகிலும் நிறுத்தப்பட உள்ளன. மற்ற வாகனங்கள் ஊருக்கு வெளியே உள்ள எல்லையில் நிறுத்தப்பட உள்ளன.
விரதமிருக்கும் வெளிநாட்டு பக்தர்கள்: திருச்செந்தூர் கோயிலில் மலேசியா டத்தோ தவராஜா, அவரது மனைவி டத்தின் ருக்மணி கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாக ஆறு நாள்கள் விரதம் இருந்து வருகின்றனர்.
இதே போல ராஜபாளையத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பரமானந்தம் பிள்ளை தலைமையிலான குழுவினர் 49-வது ஆண்டாக இவ்வாண்டு கோயிலில் விரதம் இருந்து வருகின்றனர். இவர்கள் செவ்வாய்க்கிழமை சிவன், பார்வதி, விநாயகர், முருகன், நாரதர் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு வேடங்களை அணிந்து வந்து பஜனை பாடி சுவாமி தரிசனம் செய்தனர்.

New Delhi, Oct. 28: The Burdwan blast probe has uncovered a suspected plot to assassinate Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and carry out a coup, Reuters quoted three senior Indian security officials as saying.
“The strategy was to hit the political leaders of the country and demolish the democratic infrastructure of Bangladesh,” a senior Indian home ministry official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “This was all being planned on Indian soil and we could have been blamed if there was an attack.”
The Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen also planned to assassinate Bangladesh’s main Opposition leader, Khaleda Zia, the Indian officials told Reuters. The security officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the record, did not say how the militants planned to carry out the assassinations.
Bangladesh did not comment directly on the assertions that Prime Minister Hasina had been the target of a plot but said it had been unofficially told of a terror threat to top politicians.
Asaduzzaman Khan, Bangladesh’s junior home minister, told Reuters: “We have received this information unofficially from India about a terror threat to top politicians in Dhaka.”
In most of the briefings with domestic news organisations in Delhi today, home ministry officials are not known to have mentioned the alleged plot to assassinate Hasina and Zia.
After Reuters, a western news agency, despatched the report around 8pm, the home ministry officials this newspaper contacted declined to go on record or confirm the quote attributed to their colleague.
A section of the Bangladeshi media had yesterday hinted at the India-based plot against Hasina. But home ministry officials in New Delhi had denied the suggestions yesterday.
The signal from the home ministry to Reuters suggests the Indian government is keen that Bangladesh is kept abreast of the suspicions even before any official despatch reaches there.
The Centre is expected to hand over a dossier to Bangladesh with details of the plan by members of the Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen.
Yesterday, national security adviser Ajit Doval had visited the Burdwan house where the blasts took place and met chief minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss the situation.
Referring to Doval’s meeting with the chief minister, an internal security source told this newspaper today that Mamata had conceded that more could have been done and promised cooperation.
Neighbours didn’t get a whiff of the designs of this lanky bearded Yousuf Seikh, allegedly the Indian point man in Khagragarh blast case.
Like most other children of Krishnabati village near Simulia, Yousuf read up to Class VIII before he went to a Deoband madrassa in Uttar Pradesh in 2004 where he had baptism with fire.
Investigators suspect Yousuf went to the Deoband madrassa prodded by his father-in-law who wanted him to complete the three-year training at Deoband before marrying Ayesha. Ten years down the line, Yousuf turned into a hardened terrorist, the Indian point man in the Khagragarh blast.
"My brother was an introvert. He never had a tiff with anybody. He kept himself busy with his religious work and hardly had any time for his family. This is a conspiracy against him," said Yousuf’s brother Nazrul. NIA arrested Nazrul on Thursday. NIA has reasons to believe that Yousuf had strong links with a Bangladeshi terror outfit as also Islamic fundamentalist organizations in the country.
Sources in the district police said Yousuf initially got the Bangladeshi links from his father-in-law who came from Bangladesh in 2001 and started staying at Nawpara, three kilometers away from Yousuf’s Krishnabati village.
"He went to Uttar Pradesh to take training for three years and came back to his village in 2007. After coming back, he started giving religious training to local youths. In 2009, he married Ayesha, a local girl he knew before going to Uttar Pradesh. After the blast both Yousuf and Ayesha went missing. We have also gone to Ayesha’s parental home at Nawpara but that has remained locked," said a district police officer. Sources in the district police said some suspicious people were present in his marriage in 2009 who were not local. "We are looking into the details of the guest list," the officer said.
Investigators have come to know that Yousuf came close to some Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh leaders during his three-year stay in Deoband. "When he came back to the village, he was a changed man. I can still remember that Yousuf stopped talking to his childhood friend only because of the fact that the latter didn’t perform his daily religious rites," said Jahangir Seikh, a villager.
National Investigation Agency officers traced three SIM cards of Yousuf and are trying to find out whether he had used more numbers. "The call details record of these cards show that Yousuf made several calls not only to Shakil Gazi or Sobhan Mondal — the duo killed in Khargagarh blast — but he also made numerous calls to people in Khulna and Rajshahi districts in Bangladesh, and Tamilnadu, Jammu and Kashmir, Mumbai and Kerala within the country," an investigating officer said. The officers are now trying to analyze the calls.
The NIA has also sought last six months’ transaction details from a Canara Bank branch in Nigon of all the bank accounts of Yousuf and his wife Ayesha. NIA officers came to know that Yousuf, the principal of the Simulia madrassa, had 48 bank accounts, while there were 21 bank accounts on the name of his wife. Yousuf and Burhan Seikh purchased twenty five cottahs for setting up a second madrassa at Tamilpukur about two kilometres away from Simulia. They also bought 6 cottahs in Nigon. The NIA has seized all land records and has started probe.
"He owns 12 bighas. We don’t know how he managed to buy so much of land and build the madrassa. We are probing the money trail," an NIA investigating officer said.

கடந்த பல ஆண்டுகளாக தமிழ்நாட்டில் பால் உற்பத்தியாளர் கூட்டுறவு இணையத்தின் மூலம் மாவட்டங்களில் இருந்து, பால் உற்பத்தியாளர் ஒன்றியங்களால் மாடு வளர்ப்போரிடம் இருந்து பால் கொள்முதல் செய்யப்பட்டு, பதப்படுத்தி பாக்கெட்டுகளில் அடைத்து, ஆவின் என்ற பெயரில் பொதுமக்களுக்கு விற்பனை செய்யப்படுகிறது. இவ்வளவு செலவுகள் இருப்பதால்தான், கொள்முதல் விலைக்கும், விற்பனை விலைக்கும் வித்தியாசம் இருக்கிறது. ஆவின் விற்பனை சென்னை உள்பட பெரிய நகரங்களில்தான் அதிகமாக இருக்கிறது. தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் ஆவின் மட்டுமல்லாமல், பல தனியார் நிறுவனங்கள் மூலமாகவும் கிராமப்புறங்களில் தனியார் மற்றும் கூட்டுறவு சங்கங்கள் மூலமாகவும் பால் விற்பனை நடக்கிறது. மாநிலம் முழுவதும் தினமும் ஏறத்தாழ ஒரு கோடியே 50 லட்சம் லிட்டர் பால் விற்பனை செய்யப்படுகிறது. இதில் ஆவின் மூலம் 21 லட்சத்து 50 ஆயிரம் லிட்டர்தான் விற்பனை செய்யப்படுகிறது. அதிலும் சென்னை நகரில் மட்டும் மிக அதிகமாக 11 லட்சத்து 50 ஆயிரம் லிட்டர் ஆவின் பால் விற்பனை ஆகிறது. தற்போது விவசாயிகளிடம் இருந்து பசும்பால் லிட்டருக்கு 23 ரூபாய்க்கு கொள்முதல் செய்யப்பட்டு வந்தது. இந்த விலை தங்களுக்கு கட்டுப்படியாகவில்லை, உயர்த்தித்தரவேண்டும் என விவசாயிகள் கோரிக்கை விடுத்துவந்தனர். இந்த நிலையில், தனியார் பால் நிறுவனங்கள் இதைவிட அதிகமாக அதாவது ஒரு லிட்டருக்கு 4 ரூபாய் முதல் 6 ரூபாய் வரை கூடுதலாக கொடுத்து வாங்க முற்பட்டதால், ஆவின் நிறுவனமும் பசும் பால் கொள்முதல் விலையை லிட்டருக்கு 5 ரூபாயும், எருமைப்பால் கொள்முதல் விலையை 4 ரூபாயும் உயர்த்த அரசால் ஆணையிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
இதுவரையில் சரிதான். ஆனால், பொதுமக்களுக்கான விற்பனை விலையை இதுவரையில் இல்லாத அளவுக்கு லிட்டருக்கு 10 ரூபாய் உயர்த்தியிருப்பதுதான், பொதுமக்களுக்கு பெரிய அதிர்ச்சியை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது. இனி பொதுமக்கள் பதப்படுத்திய பாலை லிட்டருக்கு 34 ரூபாய் கொடுத்து வாங்கவேண்டியது இருக்கும். தனியார் பால் விலை 38 ரூபாய் என்றாலும், தரம் சரியாக இல்லையென்றால் பொதுமக்கள் அந்தப்பக்கம் சாய வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. ஏற்கனவே 3 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ரூ.6.25 உயர்த்தப்பட்ட நிலையில், இப்போது ஒரேநேரத்தில் 10 ரூபாய் உயர்த்தியதற்கு பதிலாக, ஆண்டுக்கு 3 ரூபாயாக உயர்த்தியிருக்கலாமே என்ற கருத்து மக்களிடம் நிலவுகிறது. மேலும் இயற்கை விவசாயத்துக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் பெருகும் இந்த நேரத்தில், இயற்கை விவசாயத்துக்கு அடிப்படை இயற்கை உரம்தான். அதற்கு தேவை மாட்டு சாணம்தான். எனவே, கால்நடை வளர்ப்பை ஊக்குவிக்கவேண்டிய கட்டாயம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. கிராமப்புறங்களில் மாடுகள் மேய மேய்ச்சல் நிலங்கள் இல்லாததாலும், கால்நடை தீவனங்கள் விலை அதிகமாக உயர்ந்துவிட்டதாலும் விவசாயிகள் மாடு வளர்ப்பை மறந்துவிட்டனர். மாட்டு தீவனங்களுக்கான மானியம் இப்போது நிறுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதை மீண்டும் வழங்கி மாடு வளர்ப்பை ஊக்குவித்தால், விவசாயிகளிடம் இருந்து நேரடியாக பால் குறைந்த விலைக்கு பொதுமக்கள் வாங்கமுடியும். அந்தந்த இடங்களில் மாடுவளர்க்கும் விவசாயிகள் பாலைக்கறந்து அங்கேயோ, அருகில் உள்ள ஊர்களிலோ விற்பதன்மூலம் அதிக செலவோ, லாபமோ இல்லாமல் விற்கமுடியும். பல ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு சென்னை நகரில்கூட வீட்டு வாசலுக்கே மாட்டை கொண்டு வந்து கண்ணெதிரிலேயே பால் கறந்து தந்தார்கள். விவசாயிகளும், பொதுமக்களும் ஒரேநேரத்தில் பலன்பெற மாடு வளர்ப்பை அரசு ஊக்குவிக்க வேண்டும்.
