A SALES GIRL IN A CHENNAI STORE

worth reading.

A SALES GIRL IN A CHENNAI STORE – GIRI TRADING
From Sulaika – Hillol Das

After the Temple Darshan at the Kapaleeswarar Koil at Mylapore we entered the "Giri Trading" stores and started searching for this Book on "Thatva Bodha"

We found many people buying various Books and CDs and from their smart walks and accumulation of CDs from Bhajans to Bombay Jaishree, sent a nice feeling in us, that we have come to the right place indeed.

I was looking for this Book while my wife started collecting Bharathiar’s songs and MS’s Music. I searched everywhere for this Book.

There was this Girl, standing next to the Cashier, sincerely watching all our movements -a dark complexioned Girl, should be from a nearby Village, might be 17 or 18, should not have crossed 8th Std., might be out of poverty she is here.. all my Journalist’s brain unnecessarily calculated about this Gullible Girl..and tho’ she was repeatedly watching me, I ignored her and started searching for "Thathva Bodha"

I saw many books from "Sandhya Vandanam" to Swami VIvekananda’s "Chicago Speech" but having spent a good 40 minutes. I looked at her, she also looked at me curiously. I asked her, knowing fully well that such a girl cannot have any idea of anything, leave alone "Thathva Bodha".

"Sir, may I help you?" (in Tamil)

"Yes. I am looking for ‘Thatva Bodha’ "
"Sanskrit Text or English/Sanskrit?"

God..she knows.
"Sanskrit & English"
"Do you like to have the Publication from Chinmaya Mission or Indu Publications or by Ramakrishna Mutt?"
"I dont know..I just want to only Learn you see..I dont really know indeed"
"Do you read Tamil Sir?"
"Yes I am a Tamilian "
(thinking to myself how most of mylife time I like to act in most otherplaces that I am not)

"Then Sir, you can take this"..she ran to the shelf where I had searched for 30 minutes, removed the books in the front and came out with a Book in Tamil.
"This one in Tamil by N.Sivaraman by Indu Publications infact is simple and wonderfull. You have the Sanskrit Text too inside."
My God. Why did I under estimate such a Genius. Just because of my Arrogance that I am an NRI. Or Just because I presumed such a Black, dark complexioned, gullible girl, who would have come for this job out of absolute poverty, wouldn’t have any idea of "Thatva Bodha"

I decided to change my attitude and realized that I am absolutely an ‘Idiot’ at this moment in front of this wonderful girl and submitted myself in all humility.

"Madam, I really don’t have any idea of even who wrote ‘Thatva Bodha’ till yesterday. I just attended a lecture on this subject and was fascinated by the lecture and hence…."
"Did you attend Goda Venkateswara Sastri’s lecture in Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan?"
"Oh God. How did you know?"
"He regularly takes classes on such subjects. In fact he is one of the best Sir, in the city on such subjects."
"You are interested in such subjects?"
"Yes Sir, I read a lot about Swami Vivekananda and Ramakrishna and Thathva Bodha incidentally is my favorite Subject"
"You mean to say you have read Thatva Bodha?"

"I have read this one by Sivaraman and once you read it you won’t feel like keeping that book on the table at all."
"Why what is so great about this Book?"
"Sir,you must be joking that you don’t know about ‘Thatva Bodha’."
"Really I accept my ignorance."

My wife was watching from the corner, admiring all her CD collections.
"Sir,according to me if you read this it gives the entire Vedanthic Saramsam and to say it in-one-word you become a bit more humble in life, leaving Ahamkaram once for all."
"Is it a fact that reading this simple book one would get so humble?"
"Of course one should be involved totally into the text. Needs lot of conviction and devotion."

My wife joined the conversation and she felt this girl is indeed a very very talented intelligent girl, so she told me "Why don’t you interview her for Washington Post. Why at all you should think of Paris Hilton?"
I also felt that I owe something to her. So I asked her whether she can spare sometime for an interview.
She politely refused saying "My boss is to give me permission. Besides many people are looking for guidance like you and hence I have to go."
"What is your name?"
"Kalaivani"

My wife’s admiration for her devotion to duty and her total involvement in her work, made her go direct to the Boss "Sir, that girl Kalaivani."
"Yes very hard working Girl."
"This is my husband Viswanath."
"Nice meeting you Sir"
"He is the Senior Journalist in Washington Post."
The Boss stood up."Washington Post?"
"Yes Sir. I wd like to interview this girl. I am highly impressed with her ethics."
Boss called her. Time was 5:45 Pm.
"Kalaivani, they have come all the way from USA, they would like to spend sometime with you. Can you?"
"Sir, there are so many customers waiting for some guidance. it is a rush time. If they can come again tomorrow."
"OK. I can come again tomorrow."
I again came next day morning leaving all my appointments with ‘Times of India’ just to see this girl. It was no rush hour. My wife and myself found out.

Kalaivani is from a nearby village near Arcot. She has 5 sisters. She is the eldest one. Her father was a drunkard and he died a few years ago caring for none of them. Her mother used to work as a helper in Masonry and passed away two years back, leaving all the 6 on the streets.

This girl who had completed her 9th std decided to search for a job and ‘Giri Trading’ came forward to help her out. She brought all her 5 sisters with her and with her meagre salary she is taking care of them. All the 5 sisters are going to a nearby Chennai Corporation School.
"Kalaivani. But when did you get this enthusiasm to learn about ‘Thatva Bodha’?"
"Sir after joining here,I decided that the best way to be of help to the customers is to know the Subject first. I took small Books on Swami Vivekananda and started reading..I found the subject so fascinating..I decided to read other books in Tamil like Bagavad Gita and Viveka Choodamani. Thats how."
"What is your salary?"
"Rs 2500, Sir."
"Are you able to manage all your expenses with the 5 sisters?"
"Not at all Sir, but the Boss helps me a lot."
"What is your aim in LIfe?"
"I want all my sisters to get education. Then they would get easily employments is it not?"

"If I give monthly Rs 10,000 for meeting all your expenses, would that suffice?"
"It is indeed too much, but that also I would accept only through my Boss."

We took her to the Boss and told him that we would like to send Rs.10,000 every month so that all her sisters’ education would be completed.
The Boss said "She deserves it Sir. You can trust me – I will hand over the amount to her every month or alternately you can open an account in her name and start transferring to the account."

My friend John Paul, who is the Regional Manager of ‘Times of India’ had also come with me. He said "You have done a good thing."
My wife said "I pray that ‘Karpagambal’ helps Kalaivani to become an expert in ‘Vedantha’ and start giving lectures in USA. We can arrange for her lectures."

We left wonder struck! If we go into the interiors of India, how many more ‘Jewels’ like Kalaivani can be found!!

I really became humbled.

And what’s inside is up to you, it’s your choice.

"’If I were to squeeze the orange as hard as I could,
what would come out?’ I asked him.
He looked at me like I was a little crazy and said,

‘Juice, of course.’

‘Do you think apple juice could come out of it?’
‘No’ he laughed.
‘What about grapefruit juice?’ ‘No!’

‘What would come out of it?’
‘Orange juice, of course.’

‘Why?
Why when you squeeze an orange does orange juice come out?’

He may have been getting a little exasperated
with me at this point.

‘Well, it’s an orange and that’s what’s inside.
"I nodded.

‘Let’s assume that this orange isn’t an orange, but it’s you.
And someone squeezes you,
puts pressure on you,
says something you don’t like,
offends you.
And out of you comes anger, hatred, bitterness, fear.
Why?
The answer, as our young friend has told us,

is because that’s what’s inside.’

It’s one of the great lessons of life.
What comes out when life squeezes you?
When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, pain and fear
come out of you, it’s because that’s what’s inside.
It doesn’t matter who does the squeezing:
your mother,
your brother,
your children,
your boss,
the government.
If someone says something about you that you don’t like,
what comes out of you is what’s inside.
And what’s inside is up to you, it’s your choice.

When someone puts the pressure on you and out of you comes
anything other than love, it’s because that’s what you’ve allowed
to be inside. Once you take away all those negative things you don’t
want in your life and replace them with love, you’ll find
yourself living a highly functioning life."

HAVE YOU BEEN HONEST?

“MONEY IS YOURS BUT RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY.”

THE LESSON IS:-
THINK SERIOUSLY ABOUT CHANGING OUR BAD HABITS.

Ratan Tata Tweet…

Germany is a highly industrialized country. In such a country, many will think its people lead a luxurious life.
When we arrived at Hamburg , my colleagues walked into the restaurant, we noticed that a lot of tables were empty. There was a table where a young couple was having their meal. There were only two dishes and two cans of beer on the table. I wondered if such simple meal could be romantic, and whether the girl will leave this stingy guy.

There were a few old ladies on another table. When a dish is served, the waiter would distribute the food for them, and they would finish every bit of the food on their plates.
As we were hungry, our local colleague ordered more food for us.When we left, there was still about one third of un-consumed food on the table.
When we were leaving the restaurant, the old ladies spoke to us in English, we understood that they were unhappy about us wasting so much food.
"We paid for our food, it is none of your business how much food we left behind," my colleague told the old ladies. The old ladies were furious. One of them immediately took her hand phone out and made a call to someone. After a while, a man in uniform from Social Security organisation arrived. Upon knowing what the dispute was, he issued us a 50 Euro fine. We all kept quiet.
The officer told us in a stern voice, "ORDER WHAT YOU CAN CONSUME, MONEY IS YOURS BUT RESOURCES BELONG TO THE SOCIETY. THERE ARE MANY OTHERS IN THE WORLD WHO ARE FACING SHORTAGE OF RESOURCES. YOU HAVE NO REASON TO WASTE RESOURCES."
The mindset of people of this rich country put all of us to shame. WE REALLY NEED TO REFLECT ON THIS. We are from country which is not very rich in resources. To save face, we order large quantity and also waste food when we give others a treat.

The Six Tastes of Ayurveda

The Six Tastes of Ayurveda

Taste, called rasa in Sanskrit, is the key to understanding ayurvedic nutrition. It is why certain foods influence some people’s digestion in a positive way while not for others.

Click here to join World Malayali Club

In terms of importance, taste is second only to water — the element without which taste would not exist. (If the tongue is dry, it cannot taste.) Rasa is the immediate taste on the tongue, the one we remember, and the immediate experience of how that particular taste influences the body. Taste is made from the same five elements that comprise the doshas — ether, air, fire, water and earth — and a rasa may be sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter or astringent. Its corresponding short-term effect will have a direct influence on vata, pitta and kapha.

Each taste has a direct energetic effect on digestion, creating either a heating or a cooling sensation. This action on the digestive system, called virya, may be felt immediately after tasting a food, or some time later. For example, a sweet mango has a heating virya and tends to enhance digestive function.

A medjool date is also sweet, but it has a cooling virya and tends to slow digestive function. You may feel more full five minutes after eating the date than five minutes after eating the same amount of mango, because the date is denser and has a heavier, more cooling effect on the digestive system.

Every taste has a long-term effect on our metabolism after digestion is complete, and all the nutrients have been assimilated in the tissues. This effect is known as vipak and is either sweet, sour, or pungent. The vipak of sweet is deeply nutritive and building; the vipak of sour enhances digestive fire, and the vipak of pungent creates increased elimination.

The six rasas

Sweet (Madhura) Decreases Vata and Pitta, Increases Kapha

Sweet has a cooling virya, with some exceptions, and a sweet vipak. Of all the six tastes, sweet is the most grounding and nourishing. It’s balancing to vata and pitta and, when eaten in moderation, promotes longevity, strength, and healthy bodily fluids and tissues. It’s the taste to emphasize for someone who is trying to gain weight, as it will quickly increase kapha when taken in excess. Its heavy, oily, moist qualities tend to slow down digestion, so it’s often suggested in ayurveda to eat dessert first. The sweet taste abounds in foods such as wheat, rice, maple syrup, brown rice syrup, agave nectar, dates, licorice root, and slippery elm bark.

Salty (Lavana) Decreases Vata, Increases Pitta and Kapha

The salty taste has a heating virya and a sweet vipak. Salt is grounding and moistening, which makes it best for vata. Its warmth and unctuousness helps vata stay grounded and hydrated, but its heat may aggravate pitta. Kapha will be attracted to the warmth of salty flavors, but this flavor tends to promote more weight gain and water retention than kapha really wants. Salt stimulates digestion, helps maintain proper electrolyte balance, softens tissues, and has a mildly laxative effect when taken in moderation. Sea vegetables, salt, tamari, black olives, and processed foods are laden with the salty rasa.

Sour (Amla) Decreases Vata, Increases Pitta and Kapha

Sour’s heating virya is followed by a warming, sour vipak. The sour taste stimulates appetite and saliva production, and is stabilizing in its light, heating, and oily properties. But it should be eaten in moderation, for its refreshing influence is strong, and a little bit goes a long way. Sour balances vata, but the sour taste tends to unbalance pitta with heat, and can suffocate kapha with its slippery, grounding nature. Sour improves appetite, digestion, and elimination, and includes such foods as lemons, ume plum, amla berry (sour Indian gooseberry), vinegars, and pickled and fermented foods.

Pungent (Katu) Increases Vata and Pitta, Decreases Kapha

Air and fire give rise to the pungent rasa whose virya is heating and vipak is pungent. The hottest of all the rasas, the pungent taste improves appetite, clears sinuses, stimulates blood circulation, and motivates the senses. The pungent rasa will taste hot and stay hot from start to finish, thereby benefiting kapha more than vata. The pungent taste, with its light and dry qualities, will aggravate pitta quickly. It is sure to balance wet, heavy kapha, but it can be too hot and dry for vata when taken in excess or paired with too many other drying foods. Vata does best when the pungent taste is combined with sour, sweet, or salty foods. Fresh ginger, hot peppers, onions, garlic, mustard, and hot spices all share the quality of pungency.

Bitter (Tikta) Increases Vata, Decreases Pitta and Kapha

Of the six tastes, bitter is the coolest and lightest, making it best for pitta and least effective for vata, especially when taken without a proper balance of other tastes. Air and ether comprise this rasa, whose virya is cooling and whose vipak is pungent, making it quite cooling in the short term, but warming in the big picture. Kapha benefits from foods like dark leafy greens that abound with the bitter taste while providing calming magnesium and calcium. Dandelion root, turmeric, and fenugreek are also great sources of bitterness with cool and drying qualities.

Be careful to avoid the bitter taste in excess, as it’s known to create immediate coldness that can bring on bouts of grief and depression. Like sour, a little goes a long way. Make the bitter rasa a regular part of your meals but in small amounts. It will enhance the flavor of other foods and help to gently purify and cleanse the body.

Astringent (Kasaya) Increases Vata, Decreases Pitta and Kapha

Cool, dry, and light, the astringent rasa has a cooling virya and a pungent vipak. It is less cold than bitter but very dry and firm, which makes it a taste for vata to avoid. Many beans and legumes are astringent in nature, as are broccoli and cauliflower, all of which are known to create gas and thus aggravate the vata dosha.

Pitta will benefit from the astringent taste’s coolness, while its dry, light qualities help balance kapha. The constrictive nature of the astringent taste will also slow down digestion. Green grapes, unripe bananas, cranberries, pomegranates, alfalfa sprouts, green beans, and okra all exhibit the astringent taste. You will know this taste when it makes your mouth pucker and feel dried out.

No this is not a joke , it is a growing trend in Europe. Many donkey farms are established, in Belgium, Greece, Italy, France, Turkey, etc. Asses’ milk is used for dairy, cheese, soaps and cosmetics, even in liqueurs. The average price of one liter of donkeys’ milk is $19. In Italy donkeys are milked or raised for meat . Some red Italian salami have young donkey meat.

The Telegraph reported that researchers at the University of Naples, Italy have found thatdonkeys’ milk is very nourishing because it contains more lactose and less fat than cow’s milk. It is high in calcium and helps reduce cholesterol and protect the heart because it contains omega-3 fatty acids. The researchers also concluded that donkeys’ milk is very similar to woman’s milk, and can be used in young children who are allergic to cow’s dairy products.

The researchers, who presented their findings at the European Congress on Obesity in Turkey, said its "consumption should be encouraged."

Donkey milk is a viable alternative for young children and infants in Italy .

Donkey’s milk used to be a substitute to breast milk until the beginning of the twentieth century. It is said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in asses’ milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Legend has it that no less than 700 asses were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath. Asses’ milk was also formerly used in medicine.

Its healing virtues have been known described by Hippocrates (460 – 370 BC), the father of medicine, for numerous purposes, such as liver troubles, infectious diseases, fevers, oedema, nose bleeds, poisonings, and wounds.

Important health benefits of henna

Health Benefits of Henna1

Some of the most important health benefits of henna include its ability to relieve headaches, detoxify the body, improve nails, protect the skin, boost hair health, cool the body, reduce inflammation, and speed healing.

Henna

The word “henna” is understood by people around the world in many different ways. The majority of people probably associate henna with the dark-red/brown dye for hair and skin that is traditionally used in Eastern cultures, but the name also applies to the flowering plant from which that dye is derived.

As the sole species in the Lawsonia genus, henna has many different names across the globe, including hina and Egyptian privet, but they are all describing the same remarkable plant, which has the scientific name Lawonia inermis. You can identify a henna plant by its small white or pink flowers, as well as the small fruit it bears. Henna can be used in a wide variety of ways, including its dye form, as well as in aqueous extracts, tinctures, and salves, composed of the bark, seeds, or leaves. This versatility makes henna a very vlauable element in traditional medicines, particularly Ayurvedic practice.

Henna oil, bark, and seeds are the most common forms for medicinal benefits, and the high concentration of chemicals and nutrients in the plant gives it anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, antibacterial, astringent, and antiviral effects, among many others. While henna as an herbal treatment been widely accepted in the west, it has been used in Eastern cultures for thousands of years, and its popularity is beginning to spread. Now, let’s take a more in-depth look at the many impressive health benefits of henna.

Health Benefits of Henna2

Health Benefits of Henna

Wound Healing:

One of the most notable uses of henna is for protecting the skin against infections and eliminating inflammation. Henna has been applied to burns, wounds, and scrapes for generations, not only because it can add a protective layer against foreign pathogens and substances, but also because it has natural cooling abilities that literally suck the heat from the skin. This makes it very useful for sunburns, in a similar capacity as aloe gel.

Fever Reducer:

Henna is also able to bring down fevers, according to Ayurvedic traditions. When people are suffering from very high fevers as a secondary symptom of another condition, that rise in temperature throughout the body can be dangerous for organ function and metabolic processes. Bringing the overall temperature of the body down is essential, and henna can accomplish this by either inducing sweating and effectively “breaking” the fever, or simply cooling the body and providing some relief.

Headaches:

The juice of the henna plant is not always praised as being particularly beneficial, but in fact, the juice of the plant can be directly applied to the skin for fast relief from headaches. The anti-inflammatory effects of the compounds found in henna help it reduce that tension and promote healthy blood flow in the capillaries, which is a common cause of headaches and migraines.

Health Benefits of Henna

Anti-Inflammatory Capacity:

In a similar vein as the headache solution outlined above, henna oil is used topically for arthritic and rheumatic pains. As we age, our joints become more painful as cartilage and muscle deteriorate. This can result in painful inflammation in many different parts of the body. By applying henna oil to the inflamed or affected areas, you can guarantee a healthier and broader range of motion to maintain and active and happy life.

Anti-Aging:

Although the antioxidant capacity of henna has not been widely studied, the oil has been proven to be an astringent, which has led some people to use henna juice and oil on the skin to reduce the signs of aging and wrinkles, as well as unsightly appearance of scars and other blemishes. This is complemented by the antiviral and antibacterial effects that can protect the body’s largest organ – the skin!

Sleep Issues:

Henna oil has been directly linked to alleviating certain sleep disorders, so if you are suffering from insomnia or chronic restlessness, adding a bit of henna oil to your herbal regimen can get you back into a regular, restful schedule of sleep by soothing the body and mind, easing it into a relaxed state before sleep.

Detoxify the Body:

By soaking the bark or leaves of the henna plant in water and then consuming the consequent liquid has been connected to improved spleen and liver health. The liver is a crucial level of protection for the body, and helps to eliminate the toxins that accrue in the body. By optimizing its function and ensuring its health, you can prevent a wide range of other health conditions.

Hair Health:

Although most people would associate henna’s effect on the hair to dying its color, henna actually plays a number of roles in that part of our body. Henna has been proven to increase the strength of the hair and therefore represents a safe dye that doesn’t permanently affect the health of our follicles. Henna helps seal the hair cuticle, preventing breaking, and increasing the shine and appearance of the hair. For people suffering from hair loss or baldness, henna also inhibits this from happening. The traditional mixture is putting henna juice or oil into curds and then mixing this into your hair, as this increases the effect of the treatment.

Nails:

People often forget about maintaining healthy nails, but the cuticles and space under the nails are prime locations for infection and bacterial presence; therefore, treating your nails with henna is a wise choice. Drinking the water in which leaves have been steeped helps to prevent nails from cracking and also reduce inflammation. Applying a poultice directly to the nail beds can clear up irritation, pain, and infection in the nail beds.

Blood Pressure:

One of the most important and undervalued effects of henna is as a heart healthy herb. If you consume henna water or seeds, you can enjoy a hypotensive effect that relieves stress on the cardiovascular system and effectively lowers blood pressure. This can help prevent the plaque and platelet build-up in the heart and arteries, preventing heart attacks and strokes.

A Final Word of Warning:

Most varieties of henna are perfectly safe and non-toxic, but black henna does have some allergenic potential, as evidenced by skin rashes and internal discomfort by some users. Before adding any new herbal remedy to your normal routine, it is best to check with your medical practitioner or an herbalist. Also, hair dyes that claim to be henna-based occasionally contain other chemicals that those with sensitive skin may not appreciate, so read the labels carefully!

Easily Remove Labels From Jars

Easily Remove Labels From Jars

Whenever I finish a jar of sauce, I immediately think of a second life for the bottle in my home. And while these jars make excellent spaces for storing leftovers, dried foods or office supplies, getting the label off can be annoying. Even when I do succeed in removing the whole label the glue residue sticks around. Here is an easy method to removing jar labels, trace free. Afterwards, you can spray paint or decoupage them for a more decorative looking pantry.
You only need two household ingredients to remove the labels: baking soda and vegetable oil.
Mix equal parts of these together and form a runny paste.
remove labels
Remove the label. Running the jar under hot water makes peeling the label off easier.
remove labels
When the jar is dry, apply a thick layer of the paste over the gluey area.
remove labels
Let it sit on the jar for at least 10 minutes. Then, using a paper towel, wipe the paste off the jar. All the traces of adhesive material should wipe away too.
remove labels
Wash the jar again using soap to remove any remaining oil residue. Voila: A clean looking glass jar! This method also works well for wine bottles and cosmetics containers.

11 Walking Workouts for Your Body and Your Soul…

11 Walking Workouts for Your Body and Your Soul…

If you ever feel you need to relax, recharge your battery and get in better shape, but just haven’t found the time, the answer might be simpler than you think. Walking can be an amazing exercise for anyone who wants a quick pick-me-up for the body and brain, as well as for anyone who wants to maintain a healthy and fit life style. Even a daily 10-minute stroll can do wonders and give you a great feeling for up to 12 hours later.

Whether you want to burn fat, boost energy, lift your mood, or just get a bit more toned in a few important places, we have the workout tips for you.

walking
High-Intensity Walks:

You could go down a size in a month or two by adding high-intensity walks to your weekly schedule. Simply go out for a 10 minute routine of fast, highly intense walks on 3 non-consecutive days a week. During the rest of the week you can do moderately intese activities for about 30 minutes per day. These walks will work even better before or after other cardio workouts and, as always, the more you workout, the better you’ll feel.

High intensity walks are attained by going on repeated 3 minute intervals during which you walk fast, aiming for an exertion level of about 6 on a scale of 1 to 10, followed by 3 minutes of slow strolling.

Studies conducted in Japan showed this exact regiment of high-intensity walks significantly improved people’s aerobic fitness, leg strength and blood-pressure within a few months.

Treadmill Slimmer:

Is it too cold outside? Is it too hot outside? Your favorite TV show just started? Treadmills are the answer to all of those. No need to worry about weather, darkness or anything else, just worry about yourself. Another bonus of the treadmill is that you can see your progress in speed and distance which will help you get more motivated. Here is a great half an hour workout that can burn more than 150 calories:

Walking Sprint:

Start by warming up with a 5 minute walk at normal speed, then walk as fast as you can for 10 minutes (but don’t run). Note how far you went and turn around, walking back to your starting point at a brisk pace. When walking back, your speed should be lower than your walking sprint and you should slow down as you get closer to your starting point. Each time you do this workout, try to walk faster and go farther than you did last time, until you are happy with your time and distance.

The Weekend Walk:

This 60+ minute workout can crank up your post-exercise calorie burn nearly fivefold compared to a 30-minute walk or other short exercises. And did I mention that you will burn nearly 350 calories during the walk itself? Plan your route so you will enjoy your surroundings (nature walks have been shown to be the healthiest and most effective) or even meet up with friends. Nothing is better than some company on a long walk this. Just don’t forget to bring some water with you – dehydration is no joke!

Indoor Leg Workout:

If you don’t have a treadmill, and you don’t really want to buy one either, then you can just as easily use the stairs at your home to get a good workout. The routine takes about 5 minutes and can be performed daily:

1. Start by walking up and down one flight normally.

2. Slowly walk up sideways, crossing bottom foot over top, walk down normally and repeat facing the opposite direction. Try to keep your head up while doing this but also be careful not to fall over.

3. Step up on the first stair, then down, starting with right foot (right up, left up, right down, left down). Do this 10 times, take a moment to breath and repeat, starting with the left foot.

4. Climb the stairs two steps at a time and go down normally but quickly, using each step.

5. Run up the stairs and walk down normally.

6. Repeat numbers 4 and 5 another four times.

7. At the bottom, place your right foot on the first or second step, bend your knees, and lower into a lunge. Keep the right knee directly over the ankle as you do so. Push off with right foot to return to start. Repeat with your left leg and then alternate legs until you do 20 lunges total.

8. Walk up and down normally one time to relax and do some stretching.

Belly-Busting Walk:

You can add this simple change to your daily walks to zero in on shaping your abs. The recommended time for this workout is about 10 minutes at first, adding more time as you begin to feel it isn’t too taxing on you.

When walking, focus on drawing your abs in, toward your spine, but don’t hold your breath. It might help to imagine that your legs extend up above your navel. Try to maintain the contraction throughout your walk. If you feel it’s too much, release it for a short break while still walking, and resume after a minute or two. The slight hip swivel will make your lower torso rotate, activating more ab muscles and burning more calories.

Happiness Walk:

This workout has a lot to do with your mind and not just your body. Add these easy steps to your walk and you will be much more calm and relaxed when you are done.

1) Focus on your feet. Imagine the firm ground beneath you as each foot rolls from heel to toe with each step you take. Try to keep this awareness of your steps for 2 to 3 minutes and not to get distracted.

2) Turn your attention to breathing. As you walk, lift your torso and pull your shoulders back to stand upright and increase lung capacity. As you inhale, think of the energy you are giving your body and your mind, then exhale all of the tiredness and pain.

3) Mentally speak to yourself. Think about the fresh air and healthy workout you are doing. focus on the good things and if you find yourself wondering off into bad territory, just go back to focusing on your feet.

Nature Walk:

In just 5 minutes, mother nature can work wonders on your mood and physical well being. If possible, go for short lunchtime strolls in parks or mountain areas. It has been found that it will improve your memory and attention 20% more than a walk in an urban environment, due to fewer distractions and cleaner air.

Treadmill Hike:

If you have no hills or tracks near your home then this treadmill routine can give you the same fat burning experience of an uphill walk in just 25 minutes.

Walking with Poles:

A good pair of walking poles will cost you around $90 or more, but it may boost your calorie burn by up to 46%. Not only will you be giving your arms a workout, but the poles also reduce impact on your joints.

Outdoor challenge:

It’s not shocking to hear that walking uphill can activate 25% more muscle fibers than just strolling on a level terrain. It might be harder, but that is why it’s called a challenge. Find a hill to add to your walk, preferably one that takes at least 2 to 2½ minutes to climb, and try this workout.

First, warm up at an easy walking pace for 5 to 10 minutes and then walk up and down the hill. After you return to level terrain, do 2 minutes of brisk walking and go back to the hill climb. Repeat both the hill and level walks for your desired workout length and finish it up with 5 minutes of easy walking to cool down.

uphill
And, as always, don’t forget to bring water!

*But I won’t know*
*Cry for me now instead !*

*When I’ll be dead, you will send flowers,*
* But I won’t see*
*Send them now instead !*

*When I’ll be dead, you’ll say words of praise,*
*But I won’t hear*
*Praise me now instead !*

*When I’ll be dead, you’ll forget my faults*
* But I won’t know Forget then now, instead !*

*When I’ll be dead, you’ll miss me then*
*But I won’t feel*
*Miss me now, instead !*

*When I’ll be dead, you’ll wish you had spent more time with me,*
* Spend it now instead !!*

*Spend time with every person you love, every one you care for. Make them feel special, for you never know when time will take them away from you*

*forever !*

8 secrets hotel staff won’t tell you

8 secrets hotel staff won’t tell you

Rose Troup Buchanan

Hotel staff claimed some items in hotel rooms are hardly ever cleaned Rex.

Anonymous hotel workers have revealed eight secrets they will never tell their clients.

Writing on Quora and Reddit, staff also explained how to get the best deal out of hotels.

1. Deaths

Among the most frequently mentioned secrets is the number of people who die in hotel rooms. One user. who worked in a hotel during his university holidays, recounted how a guested had hanged himself in one of their rooms and been found by a cleaner.

“The police arrived with the appropriate people, took away the body, without any guest having the faintest idea what was going on. It never even appeared in local news."

Hotels keep this information tightly controlled to both prevent bad publicity and “dark tourism.”

2. Celebrities

Chances are you may have already stayed in a hotel at the same time as a major celebrity. “As a guest, unless you happen to glimpse the celebrity, you’ll never know they’re there,” Stacey Jean said.

“I was at a hotel that hosted a popular baseball team – yes, the entire team! – and not a soul was the wiser.”

3. Relationships and Affairs

They usually know exactly who is there for an affair. “Yes, we know who you are. No, we don’t really care!”

Gloria Londono added: “If you’re travelling with your spouse/significant other, we can tell almost from the moment you walk in, whose [sic] the decision maker of the two of you.”

4. Police

Almost all hotels – good or bad – have a strong relationship with the local police force. It is nothing against their customers, staff explained, just “where lots of people congregate, problems do arise.”

They claim officers are usually happy to go with the staff’s interpretation of events as “workers are generally pretty good judges of when the police need to be involved with a situation.”

5. Cleanliness

In all the threads, every member of staff warned guests against ever, ever, touching the “coverlet”, duvet or remote. They are never washed.

Staff warned clients away from the glasses by the sink (also never washed), to always check the seals on bottles, and advised people to never check under the bed or hard to reach places as they are never cleaned.

“Use a towel or sheet on the chairs or sofa, a LOT of people sit on them naked. It’s nasty but there is often a brown streak on the desk chair that no one think[s] about,” Reddit user Roslagen claimed.

Finally: “Bed bugs are more common than you think.”

6. Cancellations

If you want to cancel last minute, but don’t want to lose your deposit, ring the hotel’s desk and move your booking to a few days later. Wait a few hours, then ring back and ask to cancel the reservation.

“The cancellation fee will be bypassed because there’s now a new cancellation time on the new date,” Reddit user druumer89 said.

7. Booking

Never book through a third-party. The walk-in rate is usually cheaper, especially depending on the time of day (later is better) and booking directly is nearly always cheaper. Staff added guest’s special requests are often missed if they don’t book directly.

8. Freebies

Be nice to staff, particularly the doorman. “I can give you free water bottles, tampons, valet parking, tours, shuttle rides, reservations, dry cleaning, hell even an upgrade to a better room if you just ASK ME. But no one ever does because they think I’m just a doorman.”

For upgrades, always ask when the member of staff “is not busy checking in a lot of guests. You are setting up the agent to say no cause the last thing they want is a line of guests all asking for upgrades.”

10 Tips to Maximize Use of Your Computer Mouse

10 Tips to Maximize Use of Your Computer Mouse

While the mouse may seem a trivial aspect of your computer, there are probably a lot of things you don’t know about its use. Here are some great tips on how to maximize the use of your mouse, which will increase your overall productivity on the computer.
silver surfers

1. Shift Key and Mouse Click
In text editing programs Microsoft Word and even on your regular webpage, you can highlight all or portion of a certain text using the Shift key and clicking on your mouse. Place the cursor (the sign of the mouse) at the beginning of a paragraph and hold down the Shift key. Click at the end of the paragraph to highlight the entire thing, or wherever in the text that you would to end the selection.

Another tip:Holding down the Alt key while highlighting text in a text editor will allow you to selectively highlight the text. This is most useful if a paragraph or other text is in a column.

2. Use the Scroll Wheel to The Max
Most computer mice have a scroll wheel in between the right and left click buttons that allows you to scroll up and down the page by moving the wheel. However, this wheel can be used to do much more than just scroll!

– The mouse wheel can be used as a button. Pressing down on the wheel is clicking with a third mouse button. You can press down on a link to open the web page in a new tab in your browser. It can also be used to close a tab in the browser by clicking the wheel on an already open tab.

– Hold down the Shift key as your scroll up and down in your Internet browser to quickly move back and forward between webpages. Scrolling up goes forward while scrolling down goes back.

– To zoom in and out on a web page or document, hold down on the Control (Ctrl) key and scroll up to zoom in, scroll down to zoom out.

– Some mouse wheels can be pushed left or right to move backwards (left) and forwards (right) on a webpage.

3. Select With Double or Triple Clicks
Words can be selected by double clicking the word. If you want to highlight an entire paragraph, click the mouse button three times on the text

click

4. Right-Click
You can use the right-click when you want to highlight text or wish to view the properties of an object. For example, if you highlight text, you can right-click on the highlighted item and copy it, then right-click anywhere else to paste it.

Another tip: Right-click text and drag it while continuing to hold the right mouse button. When you let go, you will be given the option to move or copy the text. This will save you the extra step of having to right-click again where you want to paste the text.

5. Ctrl Key and Mouse Click
When you hold down the Ctrl key, you can left-click to select multiple files or highlight multiple sections of text. You can also hold down the Ctrl key and use the down or up arrows to select the text.

control

6. Use Mouse Side Buttons
Newer computer mice have side buttons on the side of the mouse (next to the usually right and left keys). These buttons can be programmed to do most anything, but by default, the left-thumb button can be used to go back on a web page, and the right button to go forward.

7. Use Snap to Feature
Windows has a handy ‘Snap To’ feature that will automatically move your mouse to buttons in the dialog box, such as the ‘X’ to exit or the ‘_’ to minimize. For example, to close a window, you may get a prompt asking if you really want to perform the task. With the Snap To feature, the mouse will automatically move to the OK button so that all you have to do is click if you agree. To enable this feature, open the Mouse properties under the Control Panel, and check ‘Snap To’ under the Pointer Options tab.

snap to

8. Manage an Open Window
Double-click on the top title bar of a window to maximize the window or, if it is already maximized, to resize it. Double click on the icon for the window in the top left corner to close that window.

9. Move the Mouse With Your Keyboard
Instead of using a regular mouse, you can enable your computer to use the number pad instead. This trick takes some time to master, but it can make your use of the computer much more efficient.

mouse

10. Hold Your Mouse Correctly!
There is no need to hold onto your mouse for dear life! The mouse will move well with just a light touch, which will also protect the health of your wrist. This is important for those that use the computer for hours a day, because incorrect posture on the mouse, or keyboard for that matter can cause a lot of unnecessary pain.

VERY SOON INDIA WILL EMERGE AS A “FAILED STATE”-by MG Devasahayam

VERY SOON INDIA WILL EMERGE AS A "FAILED STATE"-by MG Devasahayam Ex DC Chandigarh IAS ex defence officer too

Kleptocracy, alternatively cleptocracy or kleptarchy, ("rule by*>:) devil thieves=prostitutes") is a form of political and government corruption where the government exists to increase the personal wealth and political power of its officials and the ruling class at the expense of the wider population, often with pretence of honest service. This type of government corruption is often achieved by the embezzlement of state funds.

The existence of an octopus-like MAFIA in the financial arena is no secret. That it has gone to kleptocratic extremes has been vividly brought out in the gfiles cover story of September (Loot in name of the farmer). The ‘embedded bureaucrats’ listed in the write-up have been conspiring to sell ‘bloated air’ to fleece the farmers and small investors of their flesh and bones. It is extremely distressing to see that some of the names, including of senior civil servants, are well known and even well regarded. Is it conceivable that they were so overtaken by love of Mammon so as to fall easy prey to a small-time stock trader? Is it because this conniving carpetbagger “deals with tons of money every day by dominating all of India’s assets: equities, currency, commodities, derivatives, power and precious metal and the forex trade,” makes billions in the process and throws some crumbs at these worthies?

Why have governance standards in India, with one of the finest civil service structures in the world, descended to such deplorable depths? We need to seek the answer by going back four decades. Being from the pre-Emergency vintage of the IAS, I was the District Magistrate of Chandigarh, joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, before, during and after the Emergency. Both these States enforced Emergency rules with rigour and ruthlessness. Therefore, I have grass
roots knowledge of what happened during that period.

As the custodian-in-jail of Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan (JP), the ‘enemy-number-one-of the- State’, who was arrested by the District Magistrate, Delhi, and sent to me for safe custody, I dealt with the Delhi Administration, Union Home Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Secretariat (PMS), and, therefore, had a macro-level view of the functioning of Delhi’s ‘power centres’. The collapse of democratic governance and its institutions that we witness
Tragically, several AIS officers have willingly entered into this kleptocratic pact in return for plum ‘commercial’ postings during service, coveted ‘independent directorships’ and an ever-multiplying government sinecure after retirement!

Today had its origin during that period, starting with the breakdown of the elite All-India Services (AIS).
The strategy adopted by the rulers then was akin to the ‘Trojan Horse’ described by Homer in his legendary epic, Odyssey. It is a tale of deceit and subterfuge that the Greeks used to enter the city of Troy and end the conflict, which they could not win otherwise. For centuries and generations, this episode is remembered as the epitome of ‘betrayal of trust’!

A similar thing happened to India’s democratic governance during the Emergency. The Indian version of the Trojan Horse was set in motion on the fateful night of June 25-26, 1975, as top leaders of the opposition, including JP, Morarji Desai and AB Vajpayee, were triumphantly returning from the massive rally at the Ramlila Grounds, Delhi, after sounding the ultimatum to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, indicted for electoral corruption by the Allahabad High Court, to resign forthwith.

By that time the Trojan Horse, filled with a ‘committed’ bureaucratic- police coterie, had been smuggled into the Prime Minister’s Household (PMH) and positioned in the Home Ministry, Delhi Administration and Police. On a signal from the PMH, these wolves pounced on and arrested the opposition leaders and shut down the newspapers by cutting off electricity so that the news of the Emergency was unreleased. Within hours, they formalised the Emergency and proclaimed draconian rules and regulations to choke the media and extinguish people’s freedom and liberty.

The Emergency thus ushered in, ripped apart India’s delicately crafted and carefully nurtured democratic fabric and the institutions of governance. A new type of regime and new criteria of allocation of rights and obligations were sought to be legitimised. The real issue was the abrogation of any sense of boundary or restraint in the exercise of power, and the striking arbitrariness and arrogance with which citizens were turned into subjects. Democracy was replaced with a crude form of autocracy. Most of those who facilitated this belonged to the covenanted services of the IAS and IPS, meant to defend and safeguard our democratic republic!

Today, things are worse. In its judgement in the ‘Blackmoney Case’ (July 2011), the Supreme Court talks of the “unholy nexus between lawmakers, law
keepers, and lawbreakers”, clearly indicating that a State-sponsored kleptocracy runs the country. A kleptocracy is a deviant system wherein government departments and public institutions are commandeered for the benefit of carpetbaggers and packed with their loyal retainers. Tragically, several AIS officers have willingly entered into this kleptocratic pact in return for plum ‘commercial’ postings during service, coveted ‘independent directorships’ and an ever-multiplying government sinecure after retirement!

This has turned Delhi into a kleptocratic den with loots and scams galore. These have been cropping up like mushrooms in recent times —Commonwealth Games, ISROAntrix- Devas deal, 2G Spectrum, Godavari basin gas, National Spot Exchange, imported nuclear deals, thorium loot, Air-India mega purchase, and the biggest of them so far, Coalgate, where crucial files have gone missing! In all these massive cases of corruption, not one bureaucratic head has rolled. In fact, key players in these scams and scandals are being meticulously shielded and protected by ‘caging’ the CBI and sabotaging the instruments of Parliament, like the Public Accounts Committee and the Joint Parliamentary Committee! For pushing the Indo-US nuclear deal, Parliament itself was compromised!

But the humongous nature of defence purchase scams, that vitally affect the nation’s security, takes the cake. Here, even the Comptroller & Auditor General of India, the “most important officer under the Constitution”, has been brought into the kleptocratic network. This IAS officer has been joint secretary, additional secretary, director-general of acquisitions, officer on special duty and, finally, secretary in the Ministry of Defence from 2003 to May 2013, when he was seamlessly shifted as CAG as if it was just another routine bureaucratic transfer! During his long tenure in the ministry, he has been closely associated with many policy/ purchase/acquisition decisions and deals spanning the Army, Navy and Air Force. Most of these have become stinking scams due to wheeling and dealing and huge kickbacks. They are either under the CBI scanner or CAG scrutiny (see box). Now he is himself CAG and can cover up everything. What a wonderful kleptocratic pact.

The Union Public Service Commission, that recruits the crème de la crème of India’s civil services, has also not been left out. Here, the coveted position of Member, UPSC has gone to the loyal retainer of a State land/real estate mafia. For eight long years, this IAS officer has been deputy principal secretary, principal secretary and, on re-employment, officer on special duty to the Haryana Chief Minister. In these capacities, he has been handling the State’s Town & Country Planning (TCP) Department, which, during this period, plundered Gurgaon district and issued colony licences and change-of-land-use certificates for thousands of acres in the State, causing a loss to the exchequer running to Rs 3.5 lakh crore due to land frauds. This officer also managed to scuttle an ongoing ‘performance audit’ by the CAG on these frauds, that included the DLF-Vadra land deal. It looks as if the UPSC has lost its virginity!

By all accounts, the Haryana Government, which has successfully transformed the State into real estate in the past few years, has put together a neat kleptocratic network. The newly appointed UPSC member is not the only one to have a long stint in this network. Others include his successor as principal secretary to the CM,
The humongous nature of defence purchase scams, that vitally affect national security, takes the cake.
Who has already spent seven years as director, TCP Department, and its principal secretary. Another one is following suit with more than three years as director, TCP. As against this, the crusader against this network, Ashok Khemka, who had already seen 40 transfers in 20 years of his career, was allowed to stay for just 80 days in the job from where he had blown the whistle. Now, as per Chief Secretary(On extension) PK Chaudhary, for cancelling Vadra’s land deal, Khemka is being chargesheeted for administrative misconduct that could attract major penalties. UPSC membership and high-profile positions for the looters and gallows for the crusader! Can the IAS-anchored kleptocracy get any worse?

Kleptocratic India is fast moving towards being a ‘failed State’. Several senior and middle-level members of the AIS, more particularly the service I once belonged to, are the root cause of this. Because, without their concurrence, connivance and collaboration, no kleptocratic network could ever emerge, exist or expand. Wailing and shifting blame on politicians is pointless. Because the enemy is within, hidden in the underbelly of the Trojan Horse, the universal symbol of betrayal!
