Petition to Deny the Application of Preeta Bansal

Dear Mr. Governor,

We the undersigned oppose the nomination of Preeta D. Bansal, Esq. to the New York Court of Appeals. A judge on the State of New York’s highest court must be rational, have sound judgment and demonstrate an ability to assess facts in a non-prejudicial manner without presumption. We believe that, based on past actions and decisions taken and made by Ms. Bansal, her possession of the foregoing characteristics is questionable.

Specifically, in 2005 when Ms. Bansal served as the Chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) she and the Commission she led recommended that the United States Department of State deny Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of the Indian state of Gujarat, a diplomatic visa pursuant Section 212(a)(2)(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Agreement. That Section makes any foreign government official that directly carried out particularly severe violations of religious freedom ineligible for a visa to enter the United States. The basis for Ms. Bansal and the USCIRF’s recommendation was the alleged involvement of Mr. Modi in religious riots that took place in Gujarat in 2002.

Several independent judicial and investigative tribunals in India including those of India’s highest judicial body, the Supreme Court of India, have investigated Mr. Modi’s alleged involvement in the Gujarat riots and Mr. Modi has been cleared of any involvement in every instance. Despite this, in urging the State Department to deny Mr. Modi’s application for a visa to enter the United States, Ms. Bansal said “The [USCIRF] communicated with the State Department about the matter some time ago. We urge the department to act with appropriate Indian officials to forestall or prevent the planned visit [by Narendra Modi.]”

Ms. Bansal and the USCIRF’s recommendation were gravely irrational, irresponsible, prejudicial and presumptive. Ms. Bansal’s leadership role in adopting such a position clearly makes her unqualified for public service generally and judicial service on a state’s highest court in particular. In May of this year, Mr. Modi was elected Prime Minster of India with the first majority government in India in thirty years in what was the largest exercise of democratic rights of franchise the world has ever witnessed and this past week countless U.S. government leaders (including yourself) warmly welcomed Mr. Modi to the United States demonstrating that the decisions and actions taken by the USCIRF under Ms. Bansal’s leadership were inappropriate.

For the foregoing reasons, we respectively urge you not to propose Ms. Bansal for confirmation to the New York Court of Appeals.

Very heart touching कहानी एक गलती की :-

एक बार कुछ विद्यार्थी रसायन विज्ञानं
प्रयोगशाला में कुछ प्रयोग कर रहे थे.
सभी विद्यार्थी अपने अपने प्रयोगों में
व्यस्त थे
कि अचानक एक लड़के की परखनली से
तेज
बुलबुला उठा और उसकी छिट्कियाँ सामने प्रयोग कर
रही लड़की की आँखों में
चला गया.
पूरी प्रयोगशाला में हाहाकार मच गया.
सभी खूब
परेशांन हुए.
आनन फानन में उस लड़की को अस्पताल
पहुँचाया गया,
वहाँ डाक्टरों ने बताया कि वो अपनी आँखें
खो चुकी है.
ये सुन कर उस लड़की के घर वालों ने उस लड़के
को कोसना शुरू कर दिया और स्कूल वालों ने उस लड़के
को स्कूल से निकाल दिया.
अब
वो अंधी लड़की अपनी नीरस
ज़िन्दगी बिता रही थी,
जो शायद
किसी की लापरवाही की वजह
से वीरान
सी हो गयी थी.
अब उस
लड़की की ज़िन्दगी में कोई
भी रंग कोई मायने
नहीं रखता था.
घर वाले भी वक़्त बेवक्त उस लड़के को कोसते
रहते थे
जिसने
उनकी लड़की की ज़िन्दगी खराब
कर दी थी.
आज कल के ज़माने में तो किसी के सामने हूर
परी भी बैठा दो तो भी लड़के
वालों को उससे
भी ज्यादा खूबसूरत चाहिए होती है.
फिर उस बिचारी की वीरान
ज़िन्दगी में रंग भरने की बात
सोच पाना भी असंभव सा था.
खैर वक़्त बीतता गया और उस
लड़की को उस वीराने
की आदत हो गयी.
क्योंकि अब उसकी ज़िन्दगी में
कही से भी उजाला आने
की कोई गुंजाइश नहीं थी.
अचानक एक दिन एक बड़े इंजीनियर का रिश्ता उस
अंधी लड़की के घर आया.
यही नहीं लड़का खुद उसके घरवालों से
उसका हाथ
मांगने अपने माँ बाप के साथ आया था.
घर वाले मन ही मन बहुत खुश हो रहे थे कि बैठे
बिठाये
उन्हें
अपनी अंधी लड़की के लिए
लड़का मिल गया लेकिन
लड़की इस बात से
काफी दुखी थी.
शायद इसलिए
कि वो किसी की ज़िन्दगी खराब
नहीं करना चाहती थी.
इसलिए उसने लड़के को अन्दर बुलाया और बोली कि मैं
अंधी हूँ
आपके घर का कोई काम मैं नहीं कर
पाउंगी,
आपको मुझसे कोई सुख नहीं मिल पायेगा,
आप एक इंजीनियर हैं इसलिये आपको तो एक से
बढ़कर
एक लड़कियां मिल जायेंगी.
आप प्लीज़
अपनी ज़िन्दगी खराब मत
कीजिये .
इस पर वो लड़का आगे बढ़ा और घुटनों के बल बैठकर
लड़की का हाथ पकड़कर बोला :
प्लीज़ तुम इस शादी के लिए हाँ कहके
मुझे
मेरा प्रायश्चित कर लेने दो,
मैं वही हूँ जिसने
तुम्हारी ज़िन्दगी वीरान
की है और
आज मैं प्रायश्चित करना चाहता हूँ.
प्लीज़ मना मत करना.
ये सुन कर वो लड़की रोने लगती है, ये
सोच कर
नहीं कि उसकी ज़िन्दगी खराब
करने वाला उससे
शादी करना चाहता है.
बल्कि ये सोच कर कि इस दुनिया में ऐसे लोग भी है
जो अपनी गलती को स्वीकारना जानते
हैं ।।

At one point of time, you were the most famous regular visitor to Vaishno Devi. I’ve seen your photos in earlier years with the guys running many small shops on the trek route, though not recently. Kitni purani association hai Vaishno Devi shrine se?

Bachpan se hai. Paidaishi. My parents took me there when I was a few months old.

When did you first go on your own?

I must have been about 14.

How frequently do you go now?

Nahi, ab main nahi jaata. Vaishno Devi main bohot maanta hoon lekin ab wahan jaata nahi. It’s like this. Kai saal main gaya, wahan bhi, koi bhi mandir. Now when I travel, there’s a fair amount of expense. Business class tickets, hotel rooms, bodyguards, all that. Do-dhai-teen laakh rupaiye kharcha ho jaata hai ek baar mein. Ab main kya karta hoon ki agar mujhe mann hua Vaishno Devi jaane ka – soch leta hoon dimaag mein ki jaana hai. Phir dhai lakh nikalta hoon. Tata Memorial Cancer ya yahaan-wahaan ja ke kisi ko bhi de deta hoon. Vaishno Devi ke darshan ho jaate hain. Kahin jaane ki zaroorat hi nahi hai. Woh mere ghar mein hi hain. Yeh baat meri der mein samajh aayi ki mandir ka matlab hai man andar. Mata ki itni meher hai mere pe, lekin unhonein hi mujhe yeh raasta dikhaya hai. Aisa nahi hai that I won’t go at all – Jammu shooting hogi toh zaroor jaoonga, nazdeek hi hoon. Koi bolega uss pe film bana rahe hain aur main kaam karoon, zaroor karoonga.

So you’ve moved to a philosophy of moving away from the formalities of religion?

If I give the money to someone, and he says, mera bhala ho jayega bhai, main tere liye Bhagwan se dua karoonga – isn’t that better than me spending it on going? Mere saath toh jo hua hai, wahan pe, I can never disassociate with Vaishno Devi. It’s a long story.

Let’s hear it.
My mom and dad, they are both believers in the deity. Before I was born, they had made a mannat, ki beta de de, darshan karne aayenge. Typical Punjabi family and all that… Beta aa gaya. I must have been eight-nine months old when they took me for the darshan. This is when… I’m talking about 1968. By the time they reached Katra, I was running fever. There was no proper medical infrastructure there in those days. The doctor there said he is running 102 degrees, take him back to Delhi, show him at a proper hospital. My dad agreed to return. But my mother was adamant – ‘Mata ne diya hai, Mata le le’! Dad agreed. On the way the temperature kept on rising. By the time they reached the shrine, I had 104 and was not responding. Mother refused to turn back. She even bathed me in the Banganga. Then she took me inside, darshan kiye.

When she came out of the shrine, still crying, someone said to her, behenji, aapka beta bada khubsoorat lag raha hai, hans raha hai. She was astounded. I was laughing. They checked my temperature – it was back to normal. Hanste-khelte wapas ghar aaye wahaan se. Bas yeh kahani hai. I don’t know what is the science or logic behind this. Kuch nahi pata. How does temperature go from 104 to normal instantly? There is no logic. And this happened not to someone I know, or heard about, but to me. Aise aur bhi kisse hote rahe hain mere saath.

Film industry mein mujhe break aise hi mila thaa. I missed a flight. I had to take a 6am flight and I thought it was a 6pm one. I got such a firing on the phone, ki tum jaise unprofessional aadmi ko kabhi kaam nahi milega, and then they slammed down the phone. I cried a lot, modelling assignment chala gaya mere haath se. It was a very big thing for me then.

I was just crying and walking past Nataraj Studios, still carrying my pictures. I went inside. There was a make-up man, he saw I was holding my photos. He said, show me these photos. He said, achhi hain, andar dikha doon? He took them inside and showed them to Pramod Chakraborti. Unhone bulaya mujhe andar. He gave me a cheque for five thousand rupees and said, beta, main tumhare saath film banana chahta hoon.

Ittefaq ki baat hai. Agar main uss din flight pakad leta, toh Bangalore mein hota, modelling assignment kar raha hota. Chahe unprofessional kaho ya understand karo ki it was a misunderstanding – missing that flight meant that I got my first film. Film mil gayi, uss ke baad I never looked back.
Obviously, there is God, there is something, somewhere.

You’re a clear believer in destiny, then?

Mujhe kitne log poochte hain, aap kitna hard work karte ho. And I say, hard work toh sab hi karte hain. In this industry, it is 70% luck and 30% hard work. Luck plays a very, very important role. Pata nahi kya ho jaata hai, kuch sahi baith jaata hai sometimes. Gandi se gandi film chal jaati hai kabhi, aur achhi se achhi film nahi chalti. Kisi ki samajh mein nahi aati ki yeh chali kaise (laughs)! Koi formula hi nahi hai.

Lal Bahadur Shastri(2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966)

Lal Bahadur Shastri(2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966) was the Second Prime Minister of Bharat.One of the first challenges he faced was the provocation & tensionat Indo-Pak border which led to the inevitable i.e A war against Pakistan. When Pakistan army crossed the International border with 100 battle tanks, Shastri surprised everybody by taking the challenge upfront and asked his army chief to retaliate with full force. During the independence day speech, he said “Hathiyaron ka jawab hathiyaron se dange. Hamara desh rahega to hamara tiranga rahega"

Farmers got their due respect & importance. A series of reforms by Shastri helped them participate in the Green Revolution & Shastri did everything possible to motivate them including the conceptualization & popularization of the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”. Also, he had cleaned up his backyard & converted it into a mini farmland where he grew his own crops. When news of the “Prime Minister growing his own crops” reached the common man & farmer, he became a role model and a source of inspiration for the nation which had all the resources to solve it’s food problems but was lacking a political will & a sense of direction which was solved by Shastri. That is one of the reasons he was called “Bharat’s farmer PM”.

The next major challenge was that of food crisis. Bharat was facing a severe drought situation in 1965 & literally “begging” for grains from USA. This was the time when Shastri took up the challenge upfront & created large teams of agricultural scientists & motivated them to come up with solutions. In the meantime, Shastri gave up one meal every day so that it could be given to the needy and motivated his countrymen also to do the same.

ஸ்ரீ சண்டிகா தேவியின் பெருமையை கூறுவதும், 700 மந்திரங்களாக கருதப்படுவதும் ஸப்தசதீ அழைக்கப்படுவதுமான தேவீ மஹாத்மியம் மார்க்கண்டேய புராணத்தில் உள்ளது. இது உலக நன்மையை வேண்டி பாராயணத்திற்கும் சண்டீ ஹோமத்திற்கும் கையாளப்படுகின்றது. அவரவர்களுக்கு ஏற்ற முறைப்படி ஸ்ரீ துர்கா ஸப்த சதீயை பாராயணம் செய்தும் அதனால் ஹோமத்தை செய்வதும் அனைத்து செல்வங்களையும், இக பர நன்மைகளையும், அந்த தேவியின் அருளையும் அடைவர் என்று அறிஞர்கள் ஆராய்ந்து முடிவு செய்துள்ளனர். தேவி மஹாத்மியத்தின் சாரமாகக் கருதபப்டும் ஸ்ரீ துர்கா ஸப்த ஸ்லோகீ எனப்படும் ஏழு ஸ்லோகங்களை ஜபிப்பது ஸ்ரீதேவி மஹாத்மிய பாராயணத்திற்கு இணையாக கருதப்படுகின்றது. அதுவும் அன்னைக்கு உகந்த நவராத்திரி காலத்தில் பாராயணம் செய்வது மிகவும் விஷேசம். தன்னை ஜபம் செய்வோர்க்கு ஸ்ரீ துர்க்கா ஸப்த ச்லோகீ விரும்பத்தக்கவற்றைப் பெறுவதற்கும், விலக்க வேண்டுவனவற்றைத் தள்ளுவதற்கும் அன்னையின் அருளைப் பெற்றுத் தரும்.

இந்த ஸப்தச்லோகீ பாராயணத்தாலேயே ஸப்த சதீ பாராயண பலத்தை உறுதியாகப் பெறக்கூடும். கலியில் "கீதை", "விஷ்ணு சகஸ்ரநாமம்", "தேவி மஹாத்மியம்", "லலிதா ஸகஸ்ரநாமம்" இந்நான்கும் பலன் தரும் ஸ்தோத்திரங்கள் என்று சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது. தேவி மஹாத்மிய பலச்ருதியில் இதைப் படித்தாலும் கேட்பதாலும் கன்னிகை கணவனை அடைவாள் இந்த மஹாத்மியத்தை கேட்டு ஸ்திரீ ஸ”மங்கலித் தன்மையைப் பெறுவாள். மனிதன் இஹத்தில் எல்லாவற்றையும் அடைவான் என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது. தேவியின் மஹ’மையை அறிந்து அவளிடம் பக்தி செய்து இஹபர லாபங்களான புக்தி முக்தியை பெறட்டும் என்று எல்லாம் வல்ல பராசக்தி மஹா மாய அருள் புரியட்டும்.

ஜ்ஞாநிநாமபி சேதாம்ஸி தேவீ பகவதீ ஹி ஸா

பலா-தாக்ருஷ்ய மோஹாய மஹா மாயா ப்ரயச்சதி (1)

ஐச்வர்யம், தர்மம், புகழ், பொருள், வைராக்கியம், ஞானம் ஆகிய ஆறு குணங்களையும் பூரணமாகப் பெற்ற மஹாமாயா ஸ்வரூபிணியான அந்த தேவி ஆத்ம ஞானம் பெற்ற ஜ“வன் முக்தர்களுடைய மனோ விருத்திகளைக் கூட பலாத்காரமாக இழுத்து மோஹ’க்கும்படி செய்கின்றாள்.

இந்த ஸ்லோகத்தை பாராயணம் செய்வதால் சர்வ ஜன மோஹம் ஏற்படுவது அநுபவ சித்தம் எனக் கூறப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது.

ஏ துர்கே! ஆபத்திற்குள்ளான ஒருவன் உன்னை ஸ்மரித்தால் அவனுக்கு ஏற்படும் பயத்தை நீ அழித்து விடுகின்றாய்.

சௌக்யமாய் இருப்பவர்கள் உன்னை நினைந்து அன்போடு துதித்தால் அவர்களுக்கு நல்ல அறிவை அளித்து மேன் மேலும் நற்காரியங்களிலே ஈடுபடும்படி செய்கின்றாய். வறுமை, துக்கம், பயம் இவற்றையெல்லாம் அபகரிக்கும் ஏ தேவி! உன்னைத் தவிர வேறு யார் தான் எல்லாவித காரியங்களையும் செய்வதற்காக தயாரஸம் ததும்பும் மனத்துடன் கூடியவனாக இருக்கின்றார்? ஸர்வ மங்கல-மாங்கல்யே சிவே ஸர்வார்த-ஸாதிகே

சரண்யே த்ர்யம்பகே கௌரி(தேவி) நாராயணி நமோஸ்து தே (3)

எல்லா மங்களகரமான வஸ்துக்களுக்கும் மங்கள ஸ்வரூபத்தை அளித்தவளும், ஸ்வயம் மங்கள ஸ்வரூபிணியும் எல்லாவற்றையும் ஸாதிக்கக் கூடியவளும், அனைவராலும் ஆச்ரயிக்க தகுந்தவளும் மூன்று கண்களை உடையவளுமான ஏ தேவி! நாராயணி! உனக்கு நமஸ்காரம்.

சரணாகத-தீநார்த்த-பரித்ராண-பராயணே

ஸர்வஸ்யார்த்திஹரே தேவி நாராயணி நமோஸ்து தே (4)

தன்னை சரணமாக அடைந்த எளியவர்கள், துன்புற்றவர்கள் இவர்களைக் காப்பாற்றுவதையே முக்கிய நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டவளும், அனைவருடைய துன்பங்களையும் அபஹரிப்பவளுமான ஏ தேவி! நாராயணி! உனக்கு நமஸ்காரம்.

மேலே கண்ட இரண்டு ஸ்லோகங்களின் பாராயணத்தினால் சகல காரியசித்தியும் பரிபூரணமாகஉண்டாகும்.

ஸர்வஸ்ரூபே ஸர்வேஸே ஸர்வ-சக்தி-ஸமந்விதே

பயேப்யஸ்-த்ராஹி-நோ தேவி துர்கே தேவி நமோஸ்துதே (5)

அனைத்து சேதனா சேதன ஸ்வரூபமாய் இருப்பவளாயும் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் ஈசுவரியாயும் ஸமஸ்த சக்திகளுடன் கூடியவளுமான ஏ தேவி துர்கே! எங்களை பலவித பாவங்களிலிருந்து காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும். ஏ தேவி! உனக்கு நமஸ்காரம்.

ரோகாந்-அசேஷாந்-அபஹம்ஹி துஷ்டா

ருஷ்டா து காமாந் ஸகலாந்- அபீஷ்டாந்

த்வாம்-ஆஸ்ரிதாநாம் ந விபந்-நராணாம்

த்வாம்-ஆஸ்ரிதா ஹ்யாஸ்ரயதாம் ப்ரயாந்தி (6)

உனது பிரீதி பிரவாகத்தினால் சமஸ்த ரோகங்களையும் அழித்து விடுகின்றாய்! கோபமுண்டானாலோ அவரவர்களுக்கு பிரியமான எல்லாப் பொருள்களையும் அழித்து விடுகின்றாய்! உன்னை அண்டிய மனிதர்களுக்கு ஆபத்து என்பதே உண்டாவதில்லை. உன்னை அண்டியவர்கள் மற்றவர்களால் விரும்பதக்கவர்களாகவும் ஆகிவிடுகின்றனர்.

இந்த ஸ்லோக பாராயணத்தால் எல்லா வித்யாப்ராப்திகளும் உண்டாகும்.

எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் ஈச்வரியான ஏ தேவி இவ்விதமே முவுலகங்களுடைய எல்லா விதமான துன்பங்களையும் நிவர்த்தி செய்தல், எங்கள் விரோதிகளை அழித்தல் இவை எப்போழுதும் உன்னால் செய்யப்பட வேண்டும்.
