‘When a problem arises, become the captain of the problem and defeat it!’

APJ Abdul KalamLast updated on: November 06, 2014 21:23 IST

Once, during his Presidency, President A P J Abdul Kalam received a letter from a student shocked with his class 12th mark-sheet.

He had secured 10 per cent in Maths and Physics, whereas throughout his school career, he had always scored 90 per cent and above.

In utter dismay, he wrote to the President of India, asking for his help.

President Kalam referred his case to the authorities and two weeks later got a reply that indeed there was a mistake in the evaluation and a rectification had been done.

In the last 15 years, President Kalam — arguably India’s most popular President and among the founders of the country’s space programme — has interacted with 18 million young Indians, face-to-face, through e-mail and over Facebook.

He receives 300 e-mails everyday.

Some of these letters have been turned into his latest book Forge Your Future, which provides an insight into the issues which concern and engage the minds of young Indians today. President Kalam’s replies are based on his personal experiences, his reading and his interactions with political and spiritual leaders.

The title of the book was selected after an online public vote.

In his quiet bungalow in Lutyens’ Delhi, President Kalam speaks to Archana Masih/Rediff.com about India becoming a developed country by 2020-2022, the heroes he admires, how 90 per cent of India’s space programme is intended for the people and the individual’s potential to become unique.

Photographs: Rajesh Karkera/Rediff.com

Dr Kalam, please can you tell me a little about your daily schedule? What’s it like?

The garden here has a 107-year old tree. Edwin Lutyens himself built and stayed in this house — so he maybe somewhere here (laughs).

His relatives had come to see this building.

The 107-year-old tree is beautiful. Parrots and various other birds live at the top and at the bottom live peacocks. Every year there are baby peacocks. I have a very bioactive tree.

I walk for 1 hour and 15 minutes every day. I spend time in my library.

In a month, I spend 15 days travelling in India. For ten days in a year, I go abroad. I am an honorary professor at the University of Beijing.

Every month, I meet a minimum of 100,000 young people. A million people in a year. So far I have met 18 million young people below the age of 25 in my country.

You get 300 e-mails everyday and spend two hours answering them. When did this process begin? When did you start actively engaging with young people?

It all started when I wrote Wings of Fire, in which I conveyed my life, how I had lived it, how I got myself educated, how I started meeting youth…

I was also teaching at Anna University at that time. After my work as scientific advisor, then projector director SLV 3, programme director AGNI — after all that I went in 2001 to Anna University as a professor.

I also get some handwritten letters. I consider them very important and I love to reply to them because they come from people from the grassroots who do not have access to the Internet. They come with unique questions and I have to give unique answers.

APJ Abdul Kalam

You mention what President Mandela told you about courage in your book — who are some of the most inspiring world leaders you have met?

Two world leaders exclusively come to my mind — Mahatma Gandhi and his unique life. Similarly, Nelson Mandela. I went to the prison where Mandela lived.

Where there is righteousness in the heart, there is beauty in the character. That’s the example of Mahatma Gandhi throughout his life.

In 2006, I travelled in the same kind of train with a steam engine from Durban to Pietermaritzburg. I could imagine the courage which Gandhiji showed in that cold winter.

Ahimsa dharma came after the battle of Kalinga. It transformed King Ashoka. The second time ahimsa dharma was put into action was by Mahatma Gandhi at Pietermaritzburg.

This book gives three messages. First: You can become a unique personality. Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were unique.

The other important thing about this book is about continuously acquiring knowledge. Thirdly, when the problem arises — become the captain of the problem and defeat it.

You envisioned a growth plan for India called Vision 2020. How close are we to achieving that vision, in view of that deadline being six years away?

Actually India 2020 is a vision for an economically developed India by 2020. Up to 2008 our GDP was 8 to 9 per cent. Then there was a problem across the Atlantic Ocean, and our GDP crashed to 6 to 7 per cent, then to 5.5 and then to 5 per cent.

So in the 2008-2014 period, we had a slack in our development programme.

Six years is a long period in a nation like India with 600 million youth, nowhere in the democratic world there exists this strength.

We also have a natural way of life. Our agriculture is doing well. We have 250 to 260 million tons of food. Our IT, small scale and pharma industries are doing very well.

Of course, we have to do lots in the development of the rural area. We have 600,000 villages where 700 million people live. We have to Provide Urban Amenities to Rural Areas (PURA). Seven thousand PURAS are needed to lift 600,000 villages.

Even now it is not too late. Fortunately, I understand the present government is taking a priority for PURAS. If they push it along with small scale industry and smart waterways, then definitely 2020 — plus or minus 2 years — we can get there.

So you are confident by 2022, that we may be able to do it?

We can do it, provided we have a national vision.

Do we have that national vision?

From 1930 to 1947, we wanted Freedom. Our caste system vanished, our religions vanished, our differences vanished and we were fighting only for Independence. I call that the first mission that India had.

The second vision: Economic development. If you work like that and declare that mission in Parliament and people and government work for it, irrespective of whichever party they belong to, it is possible. Because our resources are youth power and our natural resources.

The Book Cover

Image: President Kalam’s latest book Forge Your Future

In your book, you say ‘The orientation must turn from the past to the future and focus on how India can become a developed nation. The real issue is that we are not to see ourselves as a nation and because of that there is no national vision.’

Why do you think we have not been able to see ourselves as a nation?

When we see the types of conflicts all around — religious conflict, caste system, language problems — any big nation will have such types of problems but the nation can be united for a big cause.

Independence was a big cause that united us. That’s why I am pushing this idea that the tool for India Vision 2020 is Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas. This way we can enhance village development. I have talked about all this in my book.

Narendra Modi’s message to India…..

Out of 121 crore people in India if just 10% drink juice for ₹10 daily
then for a month it’s approximately 3600 crores!!!!!!

When we drink Pepsi and Coca-Cola, these 3600 crores goes out
of our country. Pepsi and Coca-Cola companies are getting
more than 7000 crores every day.

We are requesting you to drink sugar cane juice or tender coconut or
fresh juices and save the 7000 crores of our country and give them to our farmers.

None of our farmers will commit suicide henceforth.
When we consume fresh juices it will in turn give income to one crore people for their living.
Later the juice available for ₹10 will be available for ₹5.

Support Indian goods and make
our country financially strong.

Please ensure that this message reaches at least three persons.

Don’t stop the flow.

Nokia, McDonald, Calvin Cline, Kit Kat, Sprite, Nestle, Pepsi, KFC.
The rates of these products are less due to this reason.

Please send this message to all your groups.

When Colgate was not there didn’t husband and wife run their family happily?
When fair and lovely was not there were all our Indian women black?
When skirts were not there weren’t our girls studying?
Didn’t we know about music in India before disco came?
Were all Indians bald without Pantene?
Weren’t there any scholars in India before we knew the language English?

Buy and support Indian goods and save our country.
If all Indians stop buying foreign products for a span ry in the world.
In just 90 days our ₹2 will be equivalent to 1 dollar.

We all should join together and do it because this is our country.
If we don’t stand up for our country then we will lose our wealth to foreign countries.

We forward so many jokes and messages and greetings,
let us forward this message so that it reaches all the Indians.

Private channels

Sundara Kaandam

This is Ramayana mAsam in my native land of Kerala. When the Sun god moves behind the Western ghats to do Sandhya, the great AdyaAtma RAmAyanam hymn, scented by the sacred Name of Rama in every line, overflows from most of the houses. I’m attempting to join the devotees in my own humble way, spending some time to meditate on Sundara Kandam, where Hanuman meets Sita, with Rama’s message, like the ThiruvAdira jnAttuvela , monsoon rains which cool and nourish the parched lands of the western coast.

SundarakAndam in RAmAyanam is really Sundaram!

The poetic talents and imagination of Valmiki is in full blossom in the SundarakAndam. In every stanza, there is a pearl or diamond or ruby, studded to it, most charismatically. This poetical extravaganza turns into needle -tip precision, when the great monkey king Hanuman, starts talking to Sita.

In the very first stanza, in the very first line, he has an amazing message for Sita, separated from her husband and starving to hear a word of consolation and assurance.

This is how Hanuman introduces himself to Sita:

‘I have come with Rama’s message, Videha Raja putri! . The virtuous Rama Enquires about your welfare"

Imagine how Sita would have received the message, ‘ I have come with Rama’s message!’

Then the assurance:

‘your Rama, be assured, continuous to be virtuous. Don’t entertain any doubt on that account.

Rama: the virtuous Rama.

And also, Devi, don’t have any doubt in your mind whether he is interested in your welfare or not. He is anxious about it.

In the next verse, Hanuman reminds Sita that Rama is a great archer. He is a great Vedic too.

Rama possess BrhmAstram.

This is to remove any apprehension in her mind, if any, as to whether her husband would be able to conquer Ravana and free her.

And Rama is a great Vedic exponent too. He will never deviate from the Path of Dharma.

And then the next and most important message:

Devi, such a Rama enquired about your welfare!

Does Sita needed such an assurance about Rama’s intentions and ability and repeatedly to be told by Hanuman that he was anxious about her welfare?

Think about her situation, then. Absolutely hopeless, under the wrench-like grip of a mighty demon, with a huge army, who had been torturing her directly and indirectly. The Rakshasis, day in and day out had been praising the might of Ravana. Rama was a sanyasi and apart from his brother, he had no other support. Had he been in the throne, things would have been different with a mighty army and many other kings to support him.

In the guise of a sanyAsi, Ravana carried away Sita, by treachery. He could go to any extend to harm Sita. Rama was aware that the Jadayu bird, who intervened and tried to stop the kidnapping was mercilessly slashed to the ground by Ravana. Though he didn’t know where she was and in which state, Rama was worried about her and welfare was topmost in his mind. That was effectively conveyed by Hanuman. There cannot be anything more reassuring for a wife under the custody of the usurper than to learn that her husband is concerned about her safety and security.

To continue

7 Dangerous Plants People Insist on Using

7 Dangerous Plants People Insist on Using

For thousands of years people have used plants for various reasons; their nourishment value, healing properties, flavor enhancing, scenting, etc. Another, less agreeable use is for mind alteration purposes. Some of these were used for religious ceremonies while other were used for recreation. These seven addictive plants are still in common use today, despite the fact that information about them is widely available.
1. Areca Nuts
Dangerous Plants
Arcea nuts are often used in a similar manner as chewing tobacco, and wise, they can lead to oral cancer. They are most commonly used in India and Pakistan as part of a substance called Paan.
2. Coca Leaves
Dangerous Plants
The leaves of the Coca plant are commonly used in South America, and particularly in Bolivia (The average Bolivian consumes about 2oz. of Coca leaves a day). The leaves are particularly helpful in combating altitude sickness and are sold on the street by vendors. The Coca leaves’ extract is known as the drug cocaine, but another use for the leaves is in the production of Coca-Cola.
3. Amanita Muscaria (Fly Agaric)
Dangerous Plants

Amanita intoxication can be described as depressant, sedative-hypnotic, dissociative, and deliriant; paradoxical effects may occur. Perceptual phenomena such as macropsia and micropsia may also occur. Direct consumption, however, is poisonous and can be deadly.
4. Kava
Dangerous Plants
Kava’s most prominent use is as a drink, made from the plant’s root. The drink is used as a sedative and helps the user by calming him or her down, without the loss of mental clarity. Use is considered to be psychologically addictive, but toxicity cases are very rare, so the plant is still legal in most countries in the world.
5. Khat
Dangerous Plants
40% of Yemen’s irrigation is used for growing khat, thanks to the euphoric feeling chewing it provides, which is similar to those of amphetamines. Chewing the leaves is common practice in Yemen and Somalia, as well as other countries in that region. The problems with khat are that it creates a long-term psychological addiction, as well as liver failure, oral cancer, and ulcers.
6. Yerba Mate

The plant originated in the jungles of Mexico, where shamans used it in religious ceremonies and spiritual healings. Salvia is known for its low-toxicity levels, so it is not illegal in most countries in the world, but inhaling the smoke from burning the leaves can trigger very quick hallucinatory reactions in people. Oddly enough, in recent research, it was discovered that salvia may not be addictive and can even help treat certain types of drug addictions. This, however, remains to be seen.

10 Conspiracy Theories That Helped Shape American History

10 Conspiracy Theories That Helped Shape American History

There’s something about human nature that just loves a good conspiracy theory. We can’t help being drawn into the secrets and hearsay. Sometimes, though, conspiracy theories carry so much influence that they shape history. The history of the United States is riddled with conspiracies, from the founding of the country to the Civil Rights Movement and beyond.
10. The Death Of President Zachary Taylor
10ztaylor-e1436454308118
Sixteen months into his first term as president, Zachary Taylor suddenly took ill and died. His death is usually blamed on a batch of bad cherries and some spoiled milk, but this was also on the cusp of the Civil War, making the event a perfect target for conspiracy theorists.
Taylor’s stance on slavery was ambiguous. Although he owned slaves himself and favored westward expansion and war with Mexico, he didn’t support the idea of expanding the right to own slaves into the west. This was obviously a problem to those with an agenda to preserve and spread slavery.
While that alone would raise the eyebrows of any conspiracy theorist, there’s more—the many similarities between Taylor’s illness and the symptoms of arsenic poisoning.
Some members of the nascent Republican Party, which held a stance against slavery, were certain that Taylor’s death wasn’t an accident. They were also suspicious that there would be other targets—Andrew Jackson, James Buchanan, and William Henry Harrison. On the eve of Lincoln’s election, they believed that whoever poisoned Taylor would go after him, too, and Lincoln was swamped with letters warning him to be careful with his food. After Lincoln was assassinated, speeches referred to Taylor’s death with the implication that Lincoln’s murder was just another step in the conspiracy theory.
The Baltimore Sun even went so far as to name names. According to reports that ran a few days after Taylor’s death, future Confederate vice president Alexander Hamilton Stephens and Georgia congressman Robert Toombs showed up in Taylor’s sick room with threats of censure should he not vote the right way. The pro-slavery South was at the head of a building conspiracy. Even though Taylor wasn’t outright anti-slavery, he was trying to keep it from spreading—and that was clearly unacceptable.
9. Samuel Morse’s Foreign Conspiracies
9smorse-e1436454293437
Samuel Morse gained his fame through his invention of Morse code, but he was also an avid conspiracy theorist who wrote volumes about the immigrants and Catholics who were coming to America with the obvious intention of taking over. His hate speech was written largely under the pen name “Brutus,” and it was published in the New York Observer, which was conveniently owned by his brother.
The son of a preacher, Morse had a staunch opinion of how the American public should identify and behave: Protestant. His anti-Catholic writing started when he was teaching at New York University after an incident in Rome. He was hit by one of the Pope’s Swiss Guard for not taking off his hat as the Pope passed by.
According to Morse, there was a foreign conspiracy targeting America and its downfall. Austria in particular was plotting to destroy the United States, acting at the behest of their government and through an organization called the St. Leopold Foundation. Pope Gregory XVI was a despot and the enemy of liberty, the Jesuits were working from the inside while retaining their ties to Austria, and Catholicism was getting closer and closer to its end goal by enforcing some serious mob rule. Danger was imminent, and the Pope needed to be stopped. It was up to the Protestant community to protect everything that America stood for.
Morse ran for mayor of New York City in 1835, but he was absolutely not prepared for the cutthroat world of politics. He lost. His views remained popular, though, and his Nativist Party turned into the Know-Nothing Party, which continued to spread anti-Catholic, anti-immigration hate.
8. The 1741 Slave Conspiracy
Rendering depicting slave auctionRendering depicting slave auction

In 1741, about 20 percent of the population of Manhattan was slaves, and slaveholders had concerns about the increasing opposition and inevitable conflict. In March and April, 13 fires broke out across the city. The fires reached the lieutenant governor’s mansion, another home, a dockside warehouse, and even a cow barn.
The first three fires each happened on a Wednesday, three weeks in a row. After that, the frequency picked up. When suspicion fell on a man who had been seized by English forces and auctioned into slavery, word spread through the city even faster than the fires.
The city was at the mercy of a massive movement by slaves to rise up in revolt, and they were starting with arson. When another slave was caught running from a burning building, mob mentality quickly took over.
A trial convened at City Hall. The jury included some strongly biased participants, like the owner of one of the warehouses that had been torched. Mary Burton, a 16-year-old tavern girl, spun a tale of the slave conspiracy, claiming that she had overheard two slaves meeting with an Irish prostitute. They talked about burning the city to the ground, she claimed, and then discussed who was going to be king once they were in charge.
The Irish prostitute, Peggy Kerry, soon confessed that the story was absolutely true. After her confession, the first two slaves named in the conspiracy theory were hanged. After that, fingers couldn’t be pointed fast enough. More men were burned at the stake. The prostitute and her associates were accused of aiding in the conspiracy and running a stolen goods racket as well. They, too, were hanged.
The witch hunt ended in September. On September 24, there was a citywide celebration of the end of the fires and the trials.
7. Henry Ford’s Jewish Conspiracy
7hford-e1436454373742
In 1918, Henry Ford bought the Dearborn Independent. Within a few years, he was using the newspaper as his own platform to run a series of articles outlining what he believed was a vast Jewish conspiracy.
Ford hated a lot of things, like immigrants from Eastern Europe, parents who sent their children to daycare outside of the home, and new fashion trends. But what he hated the most was the idea that there was a conspiracy among the Jews to control all the corners of the world. He was convinced that he was being targeted by Jewish car manufacturers who were undercutting his prices and that the idea of the national debt was a front used to keep the public beholden to Jewish banking corporations. The Federal Reserve was also a part of the plot, according to Ford. This was a war that Christians could not win because of the innate ethnic advantage the Jews had when it came to financial know-how.
Once he got a hold of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a hoax that confirmed his suspicions, Ford’s campaign against the Jews gained momentum. He used his newspaper to bring all of the plans for world domination in the manifesto to the public eye. Ford eventually found out that the book was a hoax, but that didn’t dissuade him from his cause.
Finally, Ford was sued for libel, but he was involved in a car accident that prevented him from testifying. Even after he settled the matter out of court, the angry American public called for a boycott of his cars. He apologized, but that didn’t stop him from later claiming that the conspiracy continued and that the Jews had orchestrated World War II.
6. The Slave Power Conspiracy
6slavepower-e1436454318156
According to abolitionists, there was a secret Southern society in the years leading up to the Civil War—a proportionately small number of people with massive influence over both state and federal laws. It was a nearly aristocratic society bound by the idea that owning slaves was an absolute right, both legal and moral. Those at the head of the Slave Power Movement allegedly used financial interest and gain to try to sway those who thought owning slaves was immoral.
By 1850, the Slave Power conspiracy was said to have already taken over Congress. Their three primary interests were to reopen the slave trade, make slavery legal and accepted across the country, and to get rid of any opposition to the slaveholders.
The conspiracy wasn’t just about slavery. It was about the financial and capitalist rights of the Southern slave owners. The conspiracy had an incredible impact on the split between the North and the South. It was a terrifying, shadowy secret society that was conspiring to bring the entire country under its control. That meant there was absolutely no possible compromise—not with this shadow society waging war on the very idea of liberty and freedom.
5. The Populist Party’s Gold-Silver Conspiracy
5goldsilver-e1436454364550
In 1892, a new player showed up at the national convention—the People’s Party, also known as the Populist Party. At its head was Ignatius Donnelly, whom you might remember as one of the guys who insisted that Atlantis was absolutely real. His representation of the Populist Party platform was as full of conspiracy theories as you might expect.
According to Donnelly, the party had been formed just in time because the entire country was in a massive downward spiral. One of the things that he had a major issue with is something that’s still a huge cause for concern and debate today—the labor of many for the wealth of few. Donnelly said that it was unacceptable that there were so few people sitting on such massive amounts of money while everyone else was working their fingers to the bone trying to make ends meet. He said that those in power were making sure that this wouldn’t change, and they were doing it by making gold the standard.
Silver—which he said had been perfectly fine up until then—was being demonetized in favor of gold. When the Populist Party issued their platform statement, they pointed at the recent practice of abusing national power to create money, increasing the power of gold, decreasing the value of property and manual labor, and thereby increasing the amount the average citizen owed to banks and lending companies. With other political parties supposedly agreeing to overlook the practice in a conspiracy to sacrifice the well-being of the many for the financial security of the few, Donnelly made it clear that the Populist Party kept the people in mind.
Industrial America and the working class were becoming absolutely dependent on the wealthy elite, and Donnelly called it “a vast conspiracy against mankind.” Those in power were conspiring to stay in power, struggling with others at the top while stepping on the little guy, he claimed.
The party was incredibly short-lived. By 1896, the party had been absorbed by the Democratic Party, and it lost many of its supporters in the process. Some of the proposed reforms had better luck by finding their way into the New Deal.
4. The American Protective Association
pope-leo-xiii-e1436483861101
The American Protective Association (APA) was formed with one major goal in mind—preventing Catholics from holding public office. It was founded in Iowa in 1887 in response to the belief that the Roman Catholic Church had a dark agenda that opposed all that America stood for. They had the eyewitnesses to prove it, they said, claiming to have testimonies from former priests who had seen asecret papal bull ordering a massacre of all Protestants during the Feast of Saint Ignatius in 1893. At the forefront of the Church’s anti-American army were the Knights of Columbus, supposedly the part of a campaign to bring America to its knees.
The APA was originally a secret society, allied with the Republicans and formed with the Know-Nothing anti-Catholic decree as the basis of its beliefs. Most of their members were Protestant, and they released tract after tract on the conspiracy to bring down America—tracts that saw a resurgence in popularity when Kennedy was elected. They claimed that half of the country’s public offices were held by Catholics even though only about 12.5 percent of the population was Catholic.
The APA was more than happy to help the dissension along by distributing literature that claimed Pope Leo XIII had issued a doctrine that released Americans from any obligation to their country. This doctrine stated that Catholics were only responsible for their loyalty to their Church. The claims—especially those about the rumored Protestant massacre—were taken very seriously. In addition to citizens arming themselves specifically against the threat of Catholic violence, the mayor of Toledo even called in the National Guard as a precaution against the massacre.
Those who joined the APA swore an oath not to help the expansion of Catholicism in the States, hire Catholics to work for them, or enter into any kind of agreement or contract with a Catholic. They also swore not to support the election of a Catholic and to “wage a continuous warfare against ignorance and fanaticism; [ . . . and to] strike the shackles and chains of blind obedience to the Roman Catholic Church from the hampered and bound.”
3. The Dred Scott Conspiracy
3dscott-e1436454333749
The Dred Scott case was one of the landmark court cases in the history of the United States, ruling that after 11 years of freedom, Scott was still a slave. It was also a huge chapter in the Slave Power conspiracy, and the verdict clarified whose pocket the Supreme Court was in.
The reaction of the North was one of unanimous outrage. Revoking Scott’s freedom was nothing short of spitting on the very idea of freedom and individual rights, and there was only one reason that a group of human beings would come to that decision: They were a part of the Southern conspiracy. If there was any doubt about which side the court was on, they cleared it up with the ruling of this case.
The Dred Scott case added fuel to the incredible tensions between North and South. While some Northern papers took the ruling as a sign that they had already lost ground and that the government had already fallen to the conspirators, others took it as a sure sign that they needed to do what was right and continue to oppose slavery.
The case also came up in the election that would determine the course of American history. While Abraham Lincoln would condemn the decision, he also spoke out against the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, the first victory for the conspirators and a law that had been framed by Stephen Douglas, his opponent. For Lincoln, there was no doubt that the conspiracy was real, and putting his opponent in line with it gained him support from those who were convinced slaveholders wouldn’t stop until they spread slavery across the free world.
2. William Pelley And The Silver Shirts
2wdpelley-e1436454345264
Once a reporter for the Saturday Evening Post and Hollywood horror scriptwriter, William Pelley eventually turned his attention to the real world. When he looked at it, he saw a major conspiracy lurking in the shadows. After spending some time working in Russia, he became convinced that Communism was nothing less than a worldwide conspiracy orchestrated by the Jews and designed to give them control of the world.
Communism, according to Pelley, was a front for a secret group of Jews who were also in league with the Illuminati. When Pelley became active in politics, he took aim at President Roosevelt and claimed that the New Deal was yet another branch of Communism. The Great Depression had been orchestrated to bring America to its knees, but Pelley soon found someone who really understood him: Hitler.
In 1933, the pro-Nazi Pelley organized the Silver Shirts as an American version of Mussolini’s black- and Hitler’s brown-shirted supporters. He believed that the English were the true Israelites, that the Second Coming was imminent (September 17, 2001, according to the pyramids at Giza), and that Christ would finish what Hitler had started. Pelley wanted his Silver Shirts to be right there, too, ready and waiting to help.
By the middle of the 1930s, there were about 15,000 members of the Silver Shirts, but the order was short-lived. Pelley was arrested and indicted on an impressive range of charges, and by the time the war started in earnest, his movement had lost its popularity. Members would go on to spawn their own hate groups, though, ensuring that Pelley’s blind belief in a global Jewish conspiracy would live on.
1. Thomas Jefferson Wanted To End The World
1tjefferson-e1436454354280
The 1800 presidential election was outrageously vitriolic, and the Federalists threw everything they could at Thomas Jefferson, painting him in the middle of a massive conspiracy that was going to bring down the world’s governments, end Christianity, and put all private property in the hands of a select few.
It was all being orchestrated by the Illuminati. The group that had established its agents in the French court and brought about the French Revolution was looking to do the same thing in America—and they were going to use Jefferson to do it. The Federalists pointed to Jefferson’s close ties to the French and said that he had been secretly recruited by the Illuminati while spending time at the French court. The Illuminati already had a reputation as a shady group of powerful people who were trying to take over the world. Using Jefferson was supposed to play on fears that were already out there—which obviously didn’t work.
Jefferson was also supposed to be a staunch atheist, which doesn’t seem like it would be that big of a deal. But the kind of atheism that went along with the sort of person that would join up with a conspiracy to bring down the known world was a serious sort of atheism. One of the most determined—and graphic—spokesmen of the consequences of a victory for Jefferson was Timothy Dwight, then president of Yale. If Jefferson were to win, Dwight warned, the Bible would be burned. “Murder, robbery, rape, adultery, and incest will be openly taught and practiced, the air will be rent with the cries of distress, the soil will be soaked with blood, the nation black with crimes.”
Needless to say, he won anyway.

15 Habits that Damage Our Healthy Kidneys

15 Habits that Damage Our Healthy Kidneys

It’s hard to notice when we do our kidneys damage. Even if 80% damaged, kidneys can still do their job, and so we rarely realize they’re on their last leg. Often, even common daily habits can cause your kidneys continual damage, and when you finally discover something’s wrong, it’s too late.

Our kidneys are incredible organs that work very hard. By themselves, they absorb minerals and nutrients, produce hormones, act as a filter for toxins in our blood, produce our urine and maintain a normal acid to alkaline ratio. We cannot live without our kidneys functioning properly. The Chinese, for example, have looked at the kidneys as a site of essential life force for centuries.

kidney

If you’re serious about looking after yourself, then taking care of your kidneys should be one of your primary concerns. If you want to make sure your kidneys thrive and continue to serve you in the coming years ahead, here’s a helpful list of habits you should definitely avoid:

1. Drinking Sodas
A study conducted on employees working at Osaka University in Japan found that drinking 2 or more soda drinks a day (either diet or regular) may well be connected to a higher risk of kidney disease. The study included 12,000 people, and those who drank larger quantities of soda were found to have protein in their urine, which is one of the first signs of kidney damage. However, early detection can reverse the disease with proper treatment.

2. A Deficiency in Vitamin B6
The healthy function of our kidneys also depends on a healthy diet, especially one that contains certain nutrients. According to a study performed at the University of Maryland, a vitamin B6 deficiency increases the risk of the formation of kidney stones. For healthy kidney function, a person should have at least 1.3 milligrams of vitamin B6 in their food every day. The best sources for this vitamin are fish, beef liver, potatoes, starchy vegetables, chickpeas and non-citrus fruits.

smoking

3. Smoking
Perhaps not surprisingly, smoking has been linked to arthrosclerosis – the narrowing and hardening of blood vessels – which influences the blood supply going to all the major organs, including the kidneys. According to a study published in Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, just 2 cigarettes a day are enough to double the number of endothelial cells (the cells that line our blood vessel walls) present in your bloodstream. This is a sign of arterial damage.

In addition, the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology references a number of different studies conducted in the last decade that link smoking to decreased kidney function.

4. Lack of Exercise
Another good way of protecting your kidneys is to get some exercise. A comprehensive study published in 2013 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology found that postmenopausal women who exercised had 31% (!) less risk of developing kidney stones.

5. Magnesium Deficiency
Magnesium is what helps our body to properly absorb and assimilate calcium. If we don’t get enough magnesium, we get overloaded in calcium and, once again, develop kidney stones. To prevent this from happening, add some leafy vegetables, seeds, nuts or beans to your diet. Another good source of magnesium is fresh avocados.

disrupted sleep

6. Disrupted Sleep
I just love a good night’s sleep and, as it turns out, so do my kidneys. According toScience Daily, a chronic disruption in our sleep can cause kidney disease. According to Dr. Michael Sole, Cardiologist and Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto, kidney tissues get renewed during the night while we’re sleeping, so when we can’t sleep without constant interruptions, the kidneys suffer direct damage.

7. Not Drinking Enough Water
One of the most important things for our kidneys is for them to get hydrated enough to perform their functions. If we don’t get enough water in our system, toxins start accumulating in our blood because there isn’t enough fluid to take them through the kidneys. The National Kidney Foundation recommends drinking at least 10-12 glasses of water every day. An easy way to check if you’re drinking enough is to make sure your urine is a light color or clear. If it’s dark, you’re not drinking enough. You can check the color of your urine with this helpful guide.

8. Not Emptying Your Bladder Fast Enough
When you hear the call to pee, you should listen to it. Obviously we’re not always at a place where we can pee right away, but if you ‘hold it in’ on a regular basis, it will increase the pressure of urine on your kidneys, which can lead to renal failure or incontinence.

9. Having Too Much Sodium in Our Diet
Salt is an important nutrient, but a disaster when taken in excessive amounts. Over-consumption of sodium will raise your blood pressure and put a lot of strain on your kidneys. We recommend limiting yourselves to no more than 5.8 grams (0.2 ounces) of salt per day. So put down that salt shaker!

10. Consuming Too Much Caffeine
We usually drink more caffeine than we think we do. There’s coffee, tea, soft drinks and sodas – before you know it, your body is full of caffeine every day, which causes your blood pressure to shoot through the roof and your kidneys to suffer damage.

taking pills

11. Abusing Pain-Killers
Many of us have a daily routine of taking medications. When we suffer from pain, our first reaction is usually to swallow a pill. They do help the pain, but you should think twice before taking too many. All pharmaceutical drugs have side effects, and many of them cause kidney or liver damage. That said, some drugs SHOULD be taken, which brings us to my next point…

12. Not Taking Certain Drugs You Need to
If you suffer from high blood pressure and/or type 2 diabetes, two very common conditions these days, you will probably also suffer kidney damage. Don’t leave these conditions untreated and take your daily meds to reduce your blood pressure and control your insulin levels. Without them, you’re almost guaranteed to suffer kidney damage.

13. Consuming Too Much Protein
According to a study conducted at Harvard University, an overdose of protein in our diet can cause our kidneys damage. When we digest protein, our body produces a byproduct – ammonia. Ammonia is a toxin that your already-hardworking kidneys need to neutralize. This means that the more protein we consume, the harder we work our kidneys, which can eventually lead to kidney failure.

14. Not Treating Common Infections
We all get lazy sometimes and ignore a simple cold or a flu, which can push our body to the brink of exhaustion. Studies have shown, however, that people who do not rest or treat their infections often end up with kidney disease.

alcohol

15. Consuming Too Much Alcohol
Now this is a no brainer. The toxins in alcohol not only damage the liver, like many believe, but they are also something your kidneys simply hate to deal with. According to Kidney Health Australia and the American Kidney Fund, one good way of avoiding kidney failure is drinking alcohol in moderation.

Tips To Keep Mosquitoes Away

Tips To Keep Mosquitoes Away

Hello rains! And, well … hello mosquitoes. Yes, it’s that time of the year – dreadful bites that give you a dengue or malaria scare. But, fret not. This list of nature-friendly tricks should help you drive those mosquitoes (and other insects) away.

Camphor and water

Two tablets of camphor in about a quarter cup of water will do the magic. But, if you want instant results, add in another tablet or two and some warm water.

Lemon and cloves

Mosquitoes detest the smell of cloves and all things citrusy. Cut two lemons into halves and press about five to six cloves into each hemisphere. Place these on a plate in your room and kiss those mosquitoes goodbye!

Garlic

This one will help you on days when you’re feeling anti-social. Binge on garlic-infused dishes. Mosquitoes will be at bay, and so will pesky human beings. Happy alone time to you!

DIY herb sprays

Move over mosquito repellent creams. Make your own sprays instead. All you’ll need is a herb like basil, water, and vodka. Boil the herb in water and strain; squeeze out all the water from the herb. Pour the water into a spray bottle. Add vodka, which should be half the quantity of water. Mix gently, and voila, your very own mosquito repellent spray is ready. *HIC*

Essential oils

Apart from titillating your olfactory senses, most essential oils can also act as mosquito repellents. Lavender, geranium, citronella, lemongrass, lemon eucalyptus, rosemary and peppermint oils work best at keeping those pests away. Just dilute the oil, pour some into an oil diffuser and let it work its magic.

Plants that repel mosquitoes

Click here to join World Malayali Club

Bring home a catnip, if you don’t own a cat, that is. The plant that’s infamous for getting felines high, works wonders as a mosquito repellent. While mosquitoes have an aversion to plants like lemongrass, marigold, scented geraniums, and herbs like rosemary and basil, the fragrance is quite appealing to us humans.

Plants that eat mosquitoes

If you can’t shoo ‘em, shoot ‘em. Well, not really. Just bring home some cute little carnivorous plants and let them do the killing for you. While we’re repulsed by mosquitoes, the Venus Flytrap, Pitcher plant, Butterwort, and Dutchman’s Pipe find them yummy. Really!

The not-so-nature-friendly method

Click here to join World Malayali Club

But, it is better than chemical-infused mosquito repellent mats and sprays that suffocate us just as much as they do to the mosquitoes. Think insect repellent bands, camphor inserted in machines and even mosquito repellent apps. If you go in for a mosquito repellent (or an insect repellent) app, just make sure it lets you switch between frequencies.

That’s that. But, if a mosquito did manage to bite you, here’s a quick home remedy. Immerse a metal spoon in hot water for about a minute and keep it pressed against the bite. This kills the proteins that mosquitoes inject into the skin and cures the itch.

Sharing Col Sandeep Dhawan’s Anecdote. A retd offr. Worth a read. :-

The feelings and sentiments are the same with the other two sister services of the Air Force and the Navy.

Subject: Was it worth it?

Sharing Col Sandeep Dhawan’s Anecdote. A retd offr. Worth a read. :-

Recently I travelled to the US. At the Indian airport (T-3, Delhi), prior to boarding the United Airlines Flight, the crew (All Indian) started organising the boarding. they announced that all US military personnel, serving or retired may please board first.
Now, I know that some of you will scoff at the idea. Some will be confused.
But I have a few thoughts / observations.
This must surely be a US Policy and important enough for them, that it found implementation on Indian soil even.
This must be something to do with the respect that the Americans want to display towards their own defence personnel.
I walked up to the Indian young man, who was the employee of United Airlines and who was handling the boarding (It was on 6 June by the flight leaving at 11.30 pm), and asked him if Indian army colonels would also have the benefit of this same courtesy? He was visibly shaken up and embarrassed.
He said, "No sir, the time has not yet come in our country when we can convey our respect as a grateful nation".
I returned back to where my daughter was sitting. She asked me what I had gone for, but I was too embarrassed to tell her the truth, I replied….."Nothing darling, I was checking about the flight".
I did not want her to start questioning as to why we, as a nation do not extend the same courtesies as another nation does. I did not want her to start comparing our country with another, to our detriment. I did not want her to raise her eye brows, when on the other hand, I have always been expostulating the glory of our country, to my children and urging them not to succumb to other pressures and to become honest, upright and responsible citizens of India.

Within the US, I took a flight from New York to Miami on 14 June via Delta Airlines. the same story was repeated. But this time I did not go to ask any embarrassing questions. Then I learnt that all US Military personnel are allowed one extra piece of baggage and are all entitled to use the Lounge.

My nourishment was not adversely affected, nor my comfort. My ego was surely a bit deflated. Honestly, I confess, the thought did come to my mind….about whether my spending my entire youth in the Indian Army was worth it? The answer which came back was…….Yes !!! It surely was !!!

The men I commanded gave me the respect, my brother officers gave me the camaraderie and bonhomie and warmth. The army life gave me a sense of discipline and personality that has stood by my side all these years. Some of my countrymen still look up to me with warmth and respect when they learn that I am a retired army officer. I feel proud and happy that I am not a Politician or a political stooge…..yes I think it was well worth spending my youth and more (28 years in uniform) with the glorious Indian army…….whether OROP comes through or not !!!!!!

NEHRU & LADY MOUNTBATTEN, THE TRUE STORY

http://francoisgautier.me/2015/07/15/nehru-lady-mountbatten-the-true-story/

NEHRU & LADY MOUNTBATTEN, THE TRUE STORY

Francois Gautier

15 July 2015

It’s time the true story of Nehru’s affair with Edwina Mountbatten be known.

Being the lover of the wife of the British Viceroy tells us three things:

1) that Nehru’s fatal attraction to the White Skin, famously continued with the Congress’ fatal attraction to Sonia Gandhi today.

2) that Nehru was betraying his country’s interests by sleeping with the enemy.

3) That we need to rewrite the history of the Indian Independence movement, which gives a very sympathetic role to Lord Mountbatten, who actually bears with Nehru, a great responsibility in the tragic partition of India.

Revolutionaries like Sri Aurobindo, who thirty years before Gandhi, advocated the throwing out of the British, by force if necessary, in the true spirit of the Bhagavad Gita, have been sidelined in Indian History books – forget about western ones: such books as Freedom at Midnight, have highly romanticized and distorted the true history of Indian Independence.

Please forward this article to at least ten of your friends.

The Modi Government should not ban this film.

HAPPINESS IS IN YOU DO NOT SEARCH OUTSIDE

.

Psychology facts:

Couples who spend at least 10 minutes a day laughing together are

more likely to have a stronger relationship.

Any friendship that exceeds the 7 yr mark is more likely to last an entire lifetime.

You can judge a lot about a person’s character by what they laugh at.

A lot of problems in the world would disappear if we talked to each other

instead of talking about each other.

Kids who play video games tend to have better hand-eye coordination,

a better memory, and better problem solving skills.

A person is more likely to use " K " in a text message when they have

no interest in talking to you.

75% of women ask questions in which they already know the answer to.

This is why it’s best to simply tell her the truth.

Everyone has a song in their playlist which they always skip, but never delete.

People who talk to themselves are more likely to have a high I.Q.

If you chew gum when you study a subject and then chew the same flavour

when you take the test it can help you remember.

Your body is actually designed to get 4 hours of sleep

twice per day instead of 8 hours once!

Over thinking can cause physical and mental fatigue,

it may also lead to chronic depression.

Ironically, sometimes the people who don’t talk to you are

the one’s who really want to.

Psychology says, the best things in life are usually found when

you are not looking for them.

According to old myths, the inability to fall asleep at night

means you’re awake in someone’s dream.

Smiles have been proven to be more attractive on a

woman’s face than make-up.

Lack of sleep makes it difficult to control emotions which is why people are

more likely to cry or laugh uncontrollably at night.
