பெரியவர் ஊர் ஊராகச் சென்று சாதுர்மாஸ்ய விரதம் இருந்துவந்த ஒருநாள் அது. அப்படி ஒரு கிராமத்தில் அவர் தங்கியிருந்தபோது, ஒரு விவசாயி பெரியவரை மிகவும் பிரயாசைப்பட்டு வந்து சந்தித்தார். அவரிடம் துளியும் உற்சாகமில்லை. முகமும் இருளடைந்து போயிருந்தது. வாயைத் திறந்து தன் துன்பங்களைக் கூற அவசியமே இல்லாதபடி, பார்த்த மாத்திரத்தில் அவரின் துன்பம் பெரியவருக்கு விளங்கி விட்டது. இருந்தும் அந்த விவசாயி,
சாமி… ஏண்டா உயிரோட இருக்கோம்னு இருக்கு. பேசாம குடும்பத்தோட தற்கொலை பண்ணிக்கலா மான்னுகூட தோணுது. ஒரு மனுஷனுக்கு வாழ்க்கைல போராட்டம் இருக்கும். ஆனா, என் வரைல போராட்டமே வாழ்க்கையா இருக்கு” என்று துயரத்தைச் சொல்லி அழுதார்.
பெரியவர் அவரிடம், குலதெய்வத்துக்கு ஒழுங்கா பூஜை செய்யறியா?” என்று கேட்டார்.
குலதெய்வமா… அப்படின்னா?” – திருப்பிக் கேட்டார் அவர்.
சரிதான்… உங்க குலதெய்வம் எதுன்னே தெரியாதா?”
ஆமாம் சாமி… வியாபார விஷயமா எங்க முன்னோர்கள் பர்மா போயிட்டாங்க. பல காலம் அங்க இருந்துட்டு திரும்பிவந்த குடும்பம் எங்க குடும்பம். என் பாட்டன்ல ஒருத்தருக்கு கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை இல்லாததால, அவர் பிள்ளைகளும் அவரைப் பார்த்து அப்படியே வந்துட்டாங்க. நாங்கள்ளாம் அந்த வழில வந்தவங்கதான்” என்றார்.
உன் முன்னோர்கள் யாராவது இப்ப உயிரோட இருக்காங்களா?”
ஒருத்தர் கிராமத்துல இருக்கார். என் அப்பா வழி பாட்டனார் அவர்.”
அவர்கிட்ட போய் உங்க குலதெய்வத்தைப் பத்தி கொஞ்சம் கேட்டுண்டு வா.”
ஏன் சாமி… அந்த சாமி எதுன்னு தெரிஞ்சு கும்பிட்டாதான் என் பிரச்னை தீருமா?”
அப்படித்தான் வெச்சுக்கோயேன்…”
என்ன சாமி நீங்க… ஊர்ல எவ்வளவோ கோயில் இருக்கு. அங்க எல்லாமும் சாமிங்கதான் இருக்கு. அப்ப அதுக்கெல்லாம் சக்தி இல்லையா?”
நான் அப்படிச் சொல்லவே இல்லையே!”
அப்ப இந்த சாமில ஒண்ண கும்பிடச் சொல்லாம, குலதெய்வத்த தெரிஞ்சுக்கிட்டு வரச் சொல்றீங்களே!”
காரணமாத்தான் சொல்றேன். ஓட்டைப் பாத்திரத்துல எவ்வளவு தண்ணி பிடிச்சாலும் நிக்காது. நீ, என்ன மாதிரி எதுவும் வேண்டாம்கற சன்னியாசி இல்லை. வாழ்வாங்கு வாழ விரும்பற குடும்பம்தான். எனக்கு, பாத்திரமே கூட தேவையில்லை. ஆனா, உனக்கு பாத்திரம்தான் பிரதான தேவை. பாத்திரம் இருந்தாத் தானே எதையும் அதுல போட்டு வெக்க முடியும்? அப்படிப்பட்ட பாத்திரம் ஓட்டையா இருந்தா, அதுல எதைப் போட்டாலும் அந்த ஓட்டை வழியா வெளிய போகுமா போகாதா?”
அப்ப குலதெய்வம்தான் பாத்திரமா… அது தெரியாததால ஓட்டைப் பாத்திரமாயிடிச்சுங்கறீங்களா?”
நீ, கேள்வி கேட்காம உன் குலதெய்வம் எதுங்கறத தெரிஞ்சு அந்தக் குலதெய்வத்தைத் தேடிப்போய் சாஷ்டாங்கமா உடம்பு தரைலபட நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிட்டு வா. உனக்கு அப்புறமா விளக்கமா சொல்றேன்” என்று அவரை அனுப்பி வைத்தார்.
அவரும் ஒரு பத்து நாள் கழித்து, சாமி! நீங்க சொன்னதைச் செய்துட்டேன். எங்க குலதெய்வம் பேச்சாயிங்கற ஒரு அம்மன். அதோட கோயில் ஒரு மலை அடிவாரத்துல இடிஞ்சுபோய் கிடந்துச்சு. யாருமே போகாம விட்டதால, கோயிலை புதர் மூடிடுச்சு. நானும் என் மக்களும் போய் புதரை எல்லாம் வெட்டி எறிஞ்சோம். அங்க, ஒரு நடு கல்தான் பேச்சாயி! ஏதோ எங்களால முடிஞ்ச அளவுக்கு அதுமேல பால ஊத்தி அபிஷேகம் செஞ்சு, கற்பூரம் காட்டி கும்பிட்டுட்டு வரேன்” என்றார்.
சபாஷ்… அந்தக் கோயிலை நல்லபடியா எடுத்துக்கட்டு. தினசரி அங்க விளக்கு எரியும்படியா பார்த்துக்கோ! உன் கஷ்டங்கள் தானா நீங்கிவிடும். பேச்சாயி பூவும் பொட்டுமா ஜொலிச்சா, உன் குடும்பமும் ஜொலிக்கும்” என்றார் பெரியவர்!
சாமி! நிறைய விளக்கமெல்லாம் சொல்றதா சொன்னீங்களே… எதுவுமே சொல்லலியே?”
அடுத்த வருஷம் இதே தேதிக்கு வா! அப்ப சொல்றேன். நான் சொன்னதை மறந்துடாதே… பேச்சாயியை விட்டுடாதே!”
அவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார். ஒரு வருடமும் ஓடியது. அவரும் பெரியவரைக் காண திரும்ப வந்தார். இந்த முறை அவரிடம் ஒரு செல்வச் செழிப்பு தெரிந்தது. பெரியவரை ஒன்றும் சும்மா பார்க்க வரவில்லை. தட்டு நிறைய பூ, பழம் இவற்றோடு கொஞ்சம் பணம் என்று தான் முன்னால் வந்து நின்றார். பெரியவரும் ஏறிட்டார்.
சாமி… நான் இப்ப நல்லா இருக்கேன். பேச்சாயி புண்ணியத்துல பிள்ளைகளும் நல்லா இருக்காங்க. இதுக்கு வழிகாட்டின பெரியசாமி நீங்கதான்! ஆனா, எனக்கு விளக்கத்த மட்டும் இன்னும் தராமலே இருக்கீங்க… இந்த அதிசயம் எப்படி நடந்தது?” – என்று திரும்ப அவர் கேட்டார். பெரியவரும் திருவாய் மலரத் தொடங்கினார். அது…?
ஒரு வருடம் கழித்து திரும்ப வந்த பர்மாக்காரரிடம் ‘குலதெய்வம்’ என்பது குறித்து பெரியவா சொன்னது மிகவும் கவனமாய் அனைவரும் அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய ஒன்றாகும்.
நம் முன்னோர்கள் வணங்கி வந்த தெய்வம்தான் குலதெய்வமாகும். முன்னோர்கள் என்றால், நமக்கு முன்பிறந்த எல்லோருமே முன்னோர்கள்தான். ஆனால் இங்கே முன்னோர்கள் என்றால், நாம் நம் தந்தைவழி பாட்டன் பாட்டிமார்களைக் கணக்கில் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இந்தத் தந்தைவழி பாட்டன்மார் வரிசையில், மிகப்பெரிய ஒழுங்கு ஒன்று இருப்பதை கூர்ந்து கவனித்தால் உணரலாம். அதுதான் ‘கோத்திரம்’ என்னும் ஒரு ரிஷியின் வழிவழிப் பாதை.
பிற கோத்திரத்தில் இருந்து பெண்கள் வந்து இந்த வழிவழிப் பாதையில் நம் தாத்தாக்களின் வாழ்க்கைத் துணையாகக் கை பிடித்திருப்பார்கள். எக்காரணம் கொண்டும் ஒரே கோத்திரத்தில் பெண் சம்பந்தம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்காது. இதனால், ரிஷி பரம்பரையானது சங்கிலிக் கண்ணி போல அறுபடாமல், ஒரே சகோதரத்துவத்தோடு வந்த வண்ணம் இருக்கும். இது ஒரு முக்கியமான ஒழுங்கு சார்ந்த விஷயமாகும்.
அடுத்து, இவர்கள் அவ்வளவு பேருக்குமே நட்சத்திரம் வேறாக, உடலமைப்பு வேறாக, குணப்பாடுகள் வேறாகவும் இருக்கும். அதுதான் இயற்கையும்கூட! ஆனால், கோத்திர வழி மாறாதபடி இவர்கள் நம் குலதெய்வம் என்னும் தெய்வ சான்னித்தியத்தில் கைகூப்பி நின்றிருப்பார்கள். தலைமுடி கொடுத்திருப்பார்கள். காது குத்துவது போன்ற வழிவழிச் செயல்பாடுகளும் நடந்துமிருக்கும்.
இந்த உலகத்தில் ஆயிரம் கோயில்கள் இருக்கின்றன. அந்தக் கோயில்களுக்கு அவர்கள் போயிருக்கலாம்; போகாமலும் இருக்கலாம். அதற்கு உத்தரவாதமில்லை. ஆனால், குலதெய்வக் கோயிலுக்கு, நாம் பக்தி என்கிற ஒன்றை அறிவதற்கு முன்பே, நம் தாய் தந்தையரால் அங்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டு, வணங்க வைக்கவும் படுகிறோம். இதன்படி பார்த்தால், குலதெய்வ சன்னிதியில் சென்று நாம் நிற்கும் போது, நம் பரம்பரை வரிசையில் போய் நிற்கிறோம். இந்த வரிசைத் தொடர்பை வேறு எங்காவது, எந்த விதத்திலாவது உருவாக்க முடியுமா?”
– பெரியவர் சொல்லச் சொல்ல, பர்மாக்காரரிடம் பரவசம்!
அது மட்டுமல்ல. ஒரு மனிதனின் பிறப்புக்குப் பின்னே இப்படியொரு பரம்பரை வரிசை இருப்பதை நினைக்கக்கூட தெரியாமல், அதிகபட்சம் இரு பாட்டன் பாட்டி பேருக்கு மேல் தெரியாமல் அல்லவா நம் வாழ்க்கைப் போக்கு உள்ளது?
ஒரு குடும்பத்தைப் பொருத்தவரையில் அந்த இறைசக்தி குலதெய்வமாக, அவர்களுக்கான ஒரு பெயரில் வெளிப்படுகிறது. இப்படிச் சொல்வதுகூட தவறு. வெளிப்பட, வழிவகை செய்யப்பட்டது! அதுவும் யாரால்? நம் முன்னோர்களால்! அவர்கள் யார்? நம்முடைய தொடக்கங்கள்… நாம் யார்? அந்தத் தொடக்கத்தின் தொடர்ச்சி! மொத்தத்தில், நாம் வேறு அவர்கள் வேறு இல்லை.
இந்த வழிவழிப் போக்கில் ஒருவர் மூட்டை மூட்டையாகப் புண்ணியத்தைக் கட்டியிருக்கலாம். இன்னொருவர் பாவமேகூட பண்ணியிருக்கட்டுமே! நாம் அங்கே போய் நின்று நம் பொருட்டு பிரத்யேகமாக வெளிப்படும் அந்த இறைசக்தியைத் தொழும் போது, அவர்களும் பித்ருக்களாக விண்ணில் இருந்து பார்க்கிறார்கள். நாமும் ஆசீர்வதிக்கப்படுகிறோம். இது எத்தனை தூரப் பார்வையோடு, வடிவமைக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு விஷயம்?”
– பெரியவர் விளக்கி முடிக்க, வந்திருந்த கூட்டம் சிலிர்த்துப் போனது. இந்தக் குலதெய்வ வழிபாட்டில் மிகப்பெரிய நல்ல சமாச்சாரம் ஒன்றும் அடங்கியுள்ளது. சந்தர்ப்ப சூழல்களால் அல்லது பூர்வ கர்மத்தால், அதுவுமல்லாது பல்வேறு காரணங்களால் ஒருவருக்கு பக்தி உணர்வு இல்லாமல் போகிறது என்று வையுங்கள். அதாவது, கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாத இந்தக் கடவுளை நாம் நம்பத் தயாரில்லை.
நான் ஒன்றும் முட்டாளில்லை என்று அவர் வீராப்பா பேசி, நாத்திகத்தில் நம்பிக்கை ஏற்பட்டு அதிலேயே அவர் போகும் நிலை வந்தாலும் பெரிதாய் தோஷமில்லை. ஏனென்றால், அவர் இவ்வாறு ஒரு நாத்திக நிலைப்பாடு கொள்ளும் முன்பே, இந்தப் பரம்பரை வரிசையில் பெற்றோர்களால் வணங்க வைக்கப்பட்டு ஆசீர்வதிக்கவும் பட்டிருப்பதால், அவர் ஒருநாள் நிச்சயம் மனம் மாறி அருள் தொடர்புக்கு ஆட்படுவார் என்பது தான் இதிலுள்ள மிகச்சிறந்த ஒரு விஷயமாகும்.
இப்படி நம்பிக்கையற்றுப் போனவர், தன் பிள்ளைகளை அழைத்துவர மாட்டாரே! அவர்கள், இதனால் இந்தப் பரம்பரை தொடர்புக்கு ஆட்படாமல் போய் விடுவார்களே என்று ஒரு கேள்வி எழலாம். பெரும்பாலும் ஒரு வழியில், ஒரே கோத்திரத்தில் திருமணங்கள் புரிந்து கொள்ளாமல், முன்னோர் காட்டிய வழியில் போகும் பட்சத்தில், வாழ்வில் நமக்கு பெரிய கஷ்டங்கள் வருவது இல்லை என்பதுதான் இம்மட்டில் புரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய விஷயமாகும். உடம்புக்கு உணவுப் பொருளால் சக்தி ஏற்படுவது போல், மனதுக்கு இறை அருளால் சக்தி ஏற்படுகிறது.
ஒரு குலதெய்வத்தின் பின்னால், இப்படியான பிரத்யேக சிறப்புகள் நிறையவே உள்ளது. குல தெய்வத்தைப் பக்தியோடு கொண்டாடும்போது, பெரிய தோஷங்களுக்கு இடமில்லாமல் போய் நம் வாழ்வும் சிறப்பாகிறது. பர்மாக்காரர் வரையிலும் அதுதான் நிகழ்ந்தது.
எனக்கும் இந்தக் குலதெய்வ விஷயம் மனசுக்குள் பெரும் உற்சாகத்தைத் தந்தது. நான் எங்கள் குலதெய்வக் கோயிலுக்குப் போனபோது என் பார்வையே மாறிப்போனது. அந்தக் கோயிலில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு தூண்களையும் தொடும்போது, என் தாத்தன் தொட்ட தூண்.. என் தாத்தன் நின்று மூச்சுவிட்ட இடம்.. என் முப்பாட்டன், அதற்கும் முற்பட்ட பாட்டன் நடந்து திரிந்த தரைப் பரப்பு.. அவர்களைப் பார்த்த பெருமாள் என்னையும் பார்க்கிறார் என்பதா? இல்லை, அவர்கள் பார்த்த பெருமாளை நான் பார்க்கிறேன் என்பதா?
ஒன்று உறுதி. அந்தப் பெருமாளை வணங்கிய வம்சம் தொடர்ந்து கொண்டே இருக்கிறது. இதுவே எத்தனை பெரிய அனுக்ரகம்! இந்தக் குலதெய்வ விளக்கமும், இதன் பின்புலமும் எனக்குள் நம் முன்னோர்கள் மேல் பெரும் மரியாதையை ஏற்படுத்திற்று.

Nixon and Kissinger’s Forgotten Shame

PRINCETON, N.J. — BANGLADESH is in fresh turmoil. On Sept. 17, its Supreme Court decided that Abdul Quader Mollah, a leading Islamist politician, should be hanged for war crimes committed during the country’s 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. When he was given a life sentence by a Bangladeshi war-crimes tribunal back in February, tens of thousands of Bangladeshis took to the streets demanding his execution. Since then, more than a hundred people have died in protests and counterprotests.

This may sound remote or irrelevant to Americans, but the unrest has much to do with the United States. Some of Bangladesh’s current problems stem from its traumatic birth in 1971 — when President Richard M. Nixon and Henry A. Kissinger, his national security adviser, vigorously supported the killers and tormentors of a generation of Bangladeshis.

From the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, Pakistan was created as a unified Muslim nation with a bizarrely divided geography: dominant West Pakistan (now simply Pakistan) was separated from downtrodden East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) by a thousand miles of hostile India. Pakistanis joked that their bifurcated country was united by Islam and Pakistan International Airlines. This strange arrangement held until 1970, when Bengali nationalists in East Pakistan triumphed in nationwide elections. The ruling military government, based in West Pakistan, feared losing its grip.

So on March 25, 1971, the Pakistani Army launched a devastating crackdown on the rebellious Bengalis in the east. Midway through the bloodshed, both the C.I.A. and the State Department conservatively estimated that about 200,000 people had died (the Bangladeshi government figure is much higher, at three million). As many as 10 million Bengali refugees fled across the border into India, where they died in droves in wretched refugee camps.

As recently declassified documents and White House tapes show, Nixon and Kissinger stood stoutly behind Pakistan’s generals, supporting the murderous regime at many of the most crucial moments. This largely overlooked horror ranks among the darkest chapters in the entire cold war.

Of course, no country, not even the United States, can prevent massacres everywhere in the world — but this was a close American ally, which prized its warm relationship with the United States and used American weapons and military supplies against its own people.

Nixon and Kissinger barely tried to exert leverage over Pakistan’s military government. In the pivotal days before the crackdown began on March 25, they consciously decided not to warn the Pakistani generals against opening fire on their population. They did not press for respecting the election results, nor did they prod the military to cut a power-sharing deal with the Bengali leadership. They did not offer warnings or impose conditions that might have dissuaded the Pakistani junta from atrocities. Nor did they threaten the loss of American military or economic support after the slaughter began.

Nixon and Kissinger were not just motivated by dispassionate realpolitik, weighing Pakistan’s help with the secret opening to China or India’s pro-Soviet leanings. The White House tapes capture their emotional rage, going far beyond Nixon’s habitual vulgarity. In the Oval Office, Nixon told Kissinger that the Indians needed “a mass famine.” Kissinger sneered at people who “bleed” for “the dying Bengalis.”

They were unmoved by the suffering of Bengalis, despite detailed reporting about the killing from Archer K. Blood, the brave United States consul general in East Pakistan. Nor did Nixon and Kissinger waver when Kenneth B. Keating, a former Republican senator from New York then serving as the American ambassador to India, personally confronted them in the Oval Office about “a matter of genocide” that targeted the Hindu minority among the Bengalis.

After Mr. Blood’s consulate sent an extraordinary cable formally dissenting from American policy, decrying what it called genocide, Nixon and Kissinger ousted Mr. Blood from his post in East Pakistan. Kissinger privately scorned Mr. Blood as “this maniac”; Nixon called Mr. Keating “a traitor.”

India was secretly sponsoring a Bengali insurgency in East Pakistan, and the violence ended only after India and Pakistan went to war in December 1971, with the Indian Army swiftly securing an independent Bangladesh. Economic development and political progress were always going to be difficult there. But Bangladesh’s situation was made tougher by the devastation: lost lives, wrecked infrastructure and radicalized politics.

Bangladesh, despite its recent economic growth, is a haunted country. Part of the tumult centers on the fate of defendants like Abdul Quader Mollah, who face judgment in a series of national war crimes trials for atrocities committed in 1971 by local collaborators with West Pakistan. These trials are popular, but the court has often failed to meet fair standards of due process. Its proceedings have ensnared members of the largest Islamist political party, Jamaat-e-Islami, which is aligned with the main political rival of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

It will be up to Bangladeshis to fix their country’s rancorous politics, but their task was made harder from the outset by Nixon and Kissinger’s callousness. The legacy of 1971 still stains the reputation of the United States in India as well. பெரியவர் ஊர் ஊராகச் சென்று சாதுர்மாஸ்ய விரதம் இருந்துவந்த ஒருநாள் அது. அப்படி ஒரு கிராமத்தில் அவர் தங்கியிருந்தபோது, ஒரு விவசாயி பெரியவரை மிகவும் பிரயாசைப்பட்டு வந்து சந்தித்தார். அவரிடம் துளியும் உற்சாகமில்லை. முகமும் இருளடைந்து போயிருந்தது. வாயைத் திறந்து தன் துன்பங்களைக் கூற அவசியமே இல்லாதபடி, பார்த்த மாத்திரத்தில் அவரின் துன்பம் பெரியவருக்கு விளங்கி விட்டது. இருந்தும் அந்த விவசாயி,
சாமி… ஏண்டா உயிரோட இருக்கோம்னு இருக்கு. பேசாம குடும்பத்தோட தற்கொலை பண்ணிக்கலா மான்னுகூட தோணுது. ஒரு மனுஷனுக்கு வாழ்க்கைல போராட்டம் இருக்கும். ஆனா, என் வரைல போராட்டமே வாழ்க்கையா இருக்கு” என்று துயரத்தைச் சொல்லி அழுதார்.
பெரியவர் அவரிடம், குலதெய்வத்துக்கு ஒழுங்கா பூஜை செய்யறியா?” என்று கேட்டார்.
குலதெய்வமா… அப்படின்னா?” – திருப்பிக் கேட்டார் அவர்.
சரிதான்… உங்க குலதெய்வம் எதுன்னே தெரியாதா?”
ஆமாம் சாமி… வியாபார விஷயமா எங்க முன்னோர்கள் பர்மா போயிட்டாங்க. பல காலம் அங்க இருந்துட்டு திரும்பிவந்த குடும்பம் எங்க குடும்பம். என் பாட்டன்ல ஒருத்தருக்கு கடவுள் நம்பிக்கை இல்லாததால, அவர் பிள்ளைகளும் அவரைப் பார்த்து அப்படியே வந்துட்டாங்க. நாங்கள்ளாம் அந்த வழில வந்தவங்கதான்” என்றார்.

அப்படித்தான் வெச்சுக்கோயேன்…”
என்ன சாமி நீங்க… ஊர்ல எவ்வளவோ கோயில் இருக்கு. அங்க எல்லாமும் சாமிங்கதான் இருக்கு. அப்ப அதுக்கெல்லாம் சக்தி இல்லையா?”
நான் அப்படிச் சொல்லவே இல்லையே!”
அப்ப இந்த சாமில ஒண்ண கும்பிடச் சொல்லாம, குலதெய்வத்த தெரிஞ்சுக்கிட்டு வரச் சொல்றீங்களே!”

அப்ப குலதெய்வம்தான் பாத்திரமா… அது தெரியாததால ஓட்டைப் பாத்திரமாயிடிச்சுங்கறீங்களா?”
நீ, கேள்வி கேட்காம உன் குலதெய்வம் எதுங்கறத தெரிஞ்சு அந்தக் குலதெய்வத்தைத் தேடிப்போய் சாஷ்டாங்கமா உடம்பு தரைலபட நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிட்டு வா. உனக்கு அப்புறமா விளக்கமா சொல்றேன்” என்று அவரை அனுப்பி வைத்தார்.
அவரும் ஒரு பத்து நாள் கழித்து, சாமி! நீங்க சொன்னதைச் செய்துட்டேன். எங்க குலதெய்வம் பேச்சாயிங்கற ஒரு அம்மன். அதோட கோயில் ஒரு மலை அடிவாரத்துல இடிஞ்சுபோய் கிடந்துச்சு. யாருமே போகாம விட்டதால, கோயிலை புதர் மூடிடுச்சு. நானும் என் மக்களும் போய் புதரை எல்லாம் வெட்டி எறிஞ்சோம். அங்க, ஒரு நடு கல்தான் பேச்சாயி! ஏதோ எங்களால முடிஞ்ச அளவுக்கு அதுமேல பால ஊத்தி அபிஷேகம் செஞ்சு, கற்பூரம் காட்டி கும்பிட்டுட்டு வரேன்” என்றார்.
சபாஷ்… அந்தக் கோயிலை நல்லபடியா எடுத்துக்கட்டு. தினசரி அங்க விளக்கு எரியும்படியா பார்த்துக்கோ! உன் கஷ்டங்கள் தானா நீங்கிவிடும். பேச்சாயி பூவும் பொட்டுமா ஜொலிச்சா, உன் குடும்பமும் ஜொலிக்கும்” என்றார் பெரியவர்!
சாமி! நிறைய விளக்கமெல்லாம் சொல்றதா சொன்னீங்களே… எதுவுமே சொல்லலியே?”
அடுத்த வருஷம் இதே தேதிக்கு வா! அப்ப சொல்றேன். நான் சொன்னதை மறந்துடாதே… பேச்சாயியை விட்டுடாதே!”
அவரும் அவ்வாறே செய்தார். ஒரு வருடமும் ஓடியது. அவரும் பெரியவரைக் காண திரும்ப வந்தார். இந்த முறை அவரிடம் ஒரு செல்வச் செழிப்பு தெரிந்தது. பெரியவரை ஒன்றும் சும்மா பார்க்க வரவில்லை. தட்டு நிறைய பூ, பழம் இவற்றோடு கொஞ்சம் பணம் என்று தான் முன்னால் வந்து நின்றார். பெரியவரும் ஏறிட்டார்.
சாமி… நான் இப்ப நல்லா இருக்கேன். பேச்சாயி புண்ணியத்துல பிள்ளைகளும் நல்லா இருக்காங்க. இதுக்கு வழிகாட்டின பெரியசாமி நீங்கதான்! ஆனா, எனக்கு விளக்கத்த மட்டும் இன்னும் தராமலே இருக்கீங்க… இந்த அதிசயம் எப்படி நடந்தது?” – என்று திரும்ப அவர் கேட்டார். பெரியவரும் திருவாய் மலரத் தொடங்கினார். அது…?
ஒரு வருடம் கழித்து திரும்ப வந்த பர்மாக்காரரிடம் ‘குலதெய்வம்’ என்பது குறித்து பெரியவா சொன்னது மிகவும் கவனமாய் அனைவரும் அறிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய ஒன்றாகும்.
நம் முன்னோர்கள் வணங்கி வந்த தெய்வம்தான் குலதெய்வமாகும். முன்னோர்கள் என்றால், நமக்கு முன்பிறந்த எல்லோருமே முன்னோர்கள்தான். ஆனால் இங்கே முன்னோர்கள் என்றால், நாம் நம் தந்தைவழி பாட்டன் பாட்டிமார்களைக் கணக்கில் எடுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். இந்தத் தந்தைவழி பாட்டன்மார் வரிசையில், மிகப்பெரிய ஒழுங்கு ஒன்று இருப்பதை கூர்ந்து கவனித்தால் உணரலாம். அதுதான் ‘கோத்திரம்’ என்னும் ஒரு ரிஷியின் வழிவழிப் பாதை.
பிற கோத்திரத்தில் இருந்து பெண்கள் வந்து இந்த வழிவழிப் பாதையில் நம் தாத்தாக்களின் வாழ்க்கைத் துணையாகக் கை பிடித்திருப்பார்கள். எக்காரணம் கொண்டும் ஒரே கோத்திரத்தில் பெண் சம்பந்தம் ஏற்பட்டிருக்காது. இதனால், ரிஷி பரம்பரையானது சங்கிலிக் கண்ணி போல அறுபடாமல், ஒரே சகோதரத்துவத்தோடு வந்த வண்ணம் இருக்கும். இது ஒரு முக்கியமான ஒழுங்கு சார்ந்த விஷயமாகும்.
அடுத்து, இவர்கள் அவ்வளவு பேருக்குமே நட்சத்திரம் வேறாக, உடலமைப்பு வேறாக, குணப்பாடுகள் வேறாகவும் இருக்கும். அதுதான் இயற்கையும்கூட! ஆனால், கோத்திர வழி மாறாதபடி இவர்கள் நம் குலதெய்வம் என்னும் தெய்வ சான்னித்தியத்தில் கைகூப்பி நின்றிருப்பார்கள். தலைமுடி கொடுத்திருப்பார்கள். காது குத்துவது போன்ற வழிவழிச் செயல்பாடுகளும் நடந்துமிருக்கும்.
இந்த உலகத்தில் ஆயிரம் கோயில்கள் இருக்கின்றன. அந்தக் கோயில்களுக்கு அவர்கள் போயிருக்கலாம்; போகாமலும் இருக்கலாம். அதற்கு உத்தரவாதமில்லை. ஆனால், குலதெய்வக் கோயிலுக்கு, நாம் பக்தி என்கிற ஒன்றை அறிவதற்கு முன்பே, நம் தாய் தந்தையரால் அங்கு கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்டு, வணங்க வைக்கவும் படுகிறோம். இதன்படி பார்த்தால், குலதெய்வ சன்னிதியில் சென்று நாம் நிற்கும் போது, நம் பரம்பரை வரிசையில் போய் நிற்கிறோம். இந்த வரிசைத் தொடர்பை வேறு எங்காவது, எந்த விதத்திலாவது உருவாக்க முடியுமா?”

அது மட்டுமல்ல. ஒரு மனிதனின் பிறப்புக்குப் பின்னே இப்படியொரு பரம்பரை வரிசை இருப்பதை நினைக்கக்கூட தெரியாமல், அதிகபட்சம் இரு பாட்டன் பாட்டி பேருக்கு மேல் தெரியாமல் அல்லவா நம் வாழ்க்கைப் போக்கு உள்ளது?

Modi blows Ananta Vijaya

Narendra Modi today blew the Ananta Vijaya, conch shell of Prince Yudhisthira, to announce his march on Delhi as future ruler, though he promised, with Caesar-like modesty, that he would not be king (main nath nahin hoon, das hoon). Castigating the Prime Minister for weakness in projecting India’s power and dignity abroad, the Congress’ anointed heir for upstart behaviour vis-á-vis the Head of Government, and Indian journalists for pusillanimity before the Pakistan Prime Minister whilst part of the Prime Ministerial delegation to New York, the Gujarat Chief Minister made it clear that nationalism would be non-negotiable under his reign.

At a mammoth, five plus lakh strong, rally organised by the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party to launch the party’s campaign for the Assembly election in November, Modi mostly skirted Delhi-centric issues and reserved his fire for the Gandhi family and the political culture it represents. He displayed canny constitutional propriety by supporting the beleaguered Prime Minister against attacks on his person and office, while berating him for weakness.

The Prime Minister recently met the US President in Washington, but instead of showcasing India as a youthful nation and ancient civilisation, he told Barack Obama that India is a poor country. He sounded like film-makers who market India’s poverty abroad and collect awards. Was the Prime Minister talking about poverty which Rahul Gandhi called a “state of mind” or the real poverty of our back lanes, Modi asked.

Claiming the nation fears the outcome of Manmohan Singh’s meeting with the Pakistan Prime Minister, Modi said he was hurt when Nawaz Sharif called Indian and Pakistani journalists for breakfast and called the Indian Prime Minister a “dehati aurat” (village woman) for complaining about terrorism from Pakistani soil (which on September 26 took 12 Indian lives in two incidents at Kathua and Samba in Jammu & Kashmir). India, he thundered, will not tolerate this insult to the nation and the Prime Minister, “whatever our internal differences may be”. Nawaz Sharif could have the temerity to speak like this about Manmohan Singh, who is senior to him even in age, because the Congress vice-president has, in village parlance, “Pradhan Mantri ki pagdi uchaal di hai” (insulted him) and that is a sin (paap).

Modi challenged Indian mediapersons present to explain why they did not walk out when the Prime Minister was thus insulted. A possible reason could be that the Indian media, which the Vajpayee Government hosted at Agra, snuggled up to then President Parvez Musharraf when he made equally outrageous comments about Jammu & Kashmir. Modi has signalled an end to tolerance of such malfeasance by the media.

The BJP’s prime ministerial hopeful said the Indian people sincerely hope Manmohan Singh will show Nawaz Sharif his place and ask when Pakistan-occupied Kashmir will be returned to India, talk about terrorism and the constant killing of our jawans, and particularly try to bring back the severed head of our jawan whose mother and widow are still weeping.

The great dilemma before the nation today is between parivar shahi and lok shahi; the battle is to decide if India will run according to the Constitution (samvidhan) or the whim of the shehzade (Rahul Gandhi). Can the UPA allies answer this question – whom would they like to work under? Modi reminded his audience that when the Supreme Court decision on debarring convicted leaders came, the BJP supported it and made its stand clear at the all party meeting and in the meeting with the President. Disapproving of the manner in which Rahul Gandhi junked his own party-led Government’s Ordinance to save convicted legislators, the Gujarat strongman said that in both the Delhi and the 2014 general elections, it was time to get rid of the Dirty Team and bring in the Dream Team.

If one were to search for the signature theme of Narendra Modi’s Operation Red Fort, it would be “mujhe vishwas hai” (I have confidence), a far cry from the inane mumblings of a leader who thought India was nothing and had to be made something — “humme Bharat ko banana hai” (we have to make India this or that). In less than a decade, he pointed out, India will celebrate 75 years of freedom (Amrut Mahotsav) and we must decide what heights we want to scale by then. The UPA, he charged, has no vision at all, and every successive Budget has hovered around sensex up or down, income tax up or down, import relief, with no grand picture.

Armed as always with statistics to prove his points, Modi said the UPA brags only about achievements made by State Governments, but its own performance is dismal. The Railways in 1980 had 61,000 km tracks and 31 years later only 3,000 km of lines have been added, whereas China in the same period added 11,000 km of railway tracks from a baseline 50,000 km and their speed and quality equals Japan.

The UPA in an affidavit before the Supreme Court admitted that the NDA in six years added 24,000 km of roads to the national highways but UPA in nine years has added only 16000 km. The Aviation sector in the past seven years has seen unprecedented corruption, losses of Rs 53,000 crore and a debt of Rs 1 lakh crore; but it gave a package of Rs 30,000 crore to the private airlines. Delhi is starved for power and stations that can generate 20,000 MW are ready but non-functional because the regime has failed to allot gas and coal and set up transmission lines, because without money no file is signed.

Striking a personal note, Narendra Modi said it is India’s greatness that a boy who used to sell tea in train cabins to make ends meet has today been elevated by the people to this stage. As the crowds went hysterical, he said, “I never dreamt to be a ruler, I am a sevak”. He exhorted them to “see my past and see my work” and “trust my promise that neither Narendra Modi nor the BJP will ever destroy your trust, let you down; we will live for your dreams, that is our mission”.

He lambasted the dysfunctional regimes in Delhi where the Chief Minister accepts no responsibility for anything that goes wrong, including the safety of young girls, and New Delhi which is paralysed between the Government and the Mother-Son rule. The UPA is drowning in corruption, but remains addicted to “Gandhi-chaap”, the high denomination notes which are being collected in the tonnes. The nation, he concluded, is yearning for Su-raaj, good governance.

Three Border Incidents of Yore : Worth a repeat : BRT Rajan

— from the diary of an old soldier ….. people like Lt Gen Bhagat were still alive ……and the modern breed of Gens was beginning to be born!

The recent brutal killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops on Indian soil, then the Indian government’s protests and the Pakistani government’s denials, etc etc has left me pondering and reminiscing about the good old days.

I have had three postings in J&K, and I distinctly remember three incidents that took place around NW Kashmir during my first posting at Uri in 1976-77:

Incident 1: A Maratha Light Infantry battalion was newly inducted in a sensitive sector. On the very first night when the rear party of the previous battalion finally moved out and the main body of Marathas newly moved in, Pakis fired 2″ mortar shells on a Maratha forward post. (This has been the usual way to welcome newly inducted Indian Army units by the Pakis for ages.) As soon as day broke, a Major on the Maratha post climbed a tree with an RL (Rocket Launcher, for my civilian friends) slung on one shoulder and two rockets slung on the other, and simply blasted two bunkers of the Mujahid post across the LOC.

Thereafter, not one bullet was fired by the Pakis on the Maratha paltan for as long as they stayed there.

Incident 2: Pakis observed that Gorkha soldiers in their OP (Observation Post) just left the LMG (Light Machine Gun) un-attended for 2 to 3 minutes while they went out of the OP for a pee. One summer day at about 11 o’ clock in the morning, in a daring raid, two Paki soldiers sneaked in and ran back with the LMG.

Four hours later, which is normally siesta time and security is lax, a team of Gorkha soldiers raided the Pak post and came back with the Paki CO’s 15 years old daughter. (Pakistan Army’s officers-lot is super privileged. They even stay on border posts with their families.) The Gorkhas did not harm the child, they just made her sit on a chair on top of the OP bunker. Soon enough, a bunch of Paki jawans came up to the LOC with a white flag and the Gorkhas’ LMG, and a neat and clean exchange took place.

Incident 3: This incident happened when Naga Regiment was newly raised in the Indian Army and Pakis had no clue what material the Nagas were made of! (Those with a weak stomach may please skip reading this incident further.)

The Nagas were also given the customary welcome on their induction, but they did not retaliate. Then, for the next two consecutive nights, a couple of Paki soldiers would cross over to the Indian side, lob hand-grenades at the Naga post and run back. On the third night, a few Naga soldiers laid an ambush and caught 2 Pakis. They brought the Paki soldiers back enough to be hidden from the Paki OP sights. They tied the Pakis to a tree, lit a fire and performed a traditional Naga dance! Then they chopped a leg of one of the Paki soldiers and literally barbecued it over the fire. Both the Paki soldiers were let off the next morning, but not before they were made to hear this dialogue between a Naga Havildar and a Sepoy:

Sepoy: “Ustaad, inko rakhte hain, bilkul chicken jaisa taste hai.”

Havildar: “Nahi re, inko jaane do, yeh dono bahut kamjor hain. Ab yahan 3 saal rehna hai; tu tension mat le, aur bahut mote tagde milenge.”

This news spread like wildfire, and the Pakis (Baluch Regiment) across the LOC were thereafter not to be seen even through binoculars, till the Naga battalion was replaced by another unit after 3 years.

Now-a-days, the only reason Pakistanis keeps blatantly bullying us Indians is because we allow them to do so.

How I miss the good old days. Jaane kahan gaye woh din!

திரு. நரேந்திர மோதி திருச்சியில் உரையாற்றி முடித்து விட்டார். சம்பிரதாயமாக தமிழில் ஆரம்பித்து, பிறகு ஹிந்தியில் மிக உணர்ச்சிகரமாக பேசினார். நடுவில் சில பகுதிகள் மட்டும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் இருந்தன. இயல்பாகவே மிகச் சிறந்த பேச்சாளர் மோதி. இந்த உரையும் அதற்கு விதிவிலக்கல்ல. தமிழக பாஜக தலைவர் ஹெச்.ராஜா நன்றாகவே மொழியாக்கம் செய்தார். ஆனால் மோதியின் குரலில் இருந்த உணர்ச்சிகள், ஏற்ற இறக்கங்கள் ஆகியவை ராஜாவின் மென்குரல் பேச்சில் கொஞ்சம் நீர்த்து விட்டன என்று தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.

தொடக்கத்தில் இன்று பாகிஸ்தான் பயங்கரவாதிகளின் தாக்குதலுக்குப் பலியான நமது ராணுவ வீரர்களுக்கு அஞ்சலி செலுத்தும் வகையில் இரண்டு நிமிடம் உட்கார்ந்த இடத்தில் உட்கார்ந்த படியே மௌனம் அனுஷ்டிக்கக் கோரினார் மோதி. பேச்சை ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கு முன், அலைபாயும், கூச்சல் போடும் கூட்டத்தை அமைதிப் படுத்தி தன் நிலைக்குக் கொண்டு வந்து பேச்சில் கவனம் குவிக்கவும் இது உதவியது. பேசப் போகிற விஷயம் கைதட்டலுக்கானது மட்டுமல்ல, கவனத்திற்கானது என்று அறிவிப்பது போலிருந்தது இது.

modi_trichy”கம்பனும் வள்ளுவனும் பாரதியும் பிறந்த தமிழ் மண்ணிற்கு வருகை தருவதை மதிப்புக்குரிய விஷயமாகக் கருதுகிறேன். தமிழ் மக்களிடம் மூன்று நல்ல குணங்கள் உண்டு – கடும் உழைப்பு, சிரத்தை, ராஜகம்பீரம் & விசுவாசம் (royal & loyal). தமிழகத்தின் பொருட்கள் தேசிய, உலக சந்தைகளில் தரம் வாய்ந்தவையாக உள்ளன. தமிழ் மக்களின் உழைப்பினால் தமிழ்நாடு இந்தியாவின் சிறந்த மாநிலங்களில் ஒன்றாகத் திகழ்கிறது, தமிழ் மிகவும் பழமையும் பெருமையும் வாய்ந்த மொழி” – இவ்வாறு தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டுக்கும் மக்களுக்கும் புகழாரம் சூட்டித் தனது உரையைத் தொடங்கினார்.

அடுத்து, குஜராத்துக்கும் தமிழகத்துக்கும் இடையே உள்ள உறவுகளை, ஒற்றுமைகளைப் பட்டியலிட்டார். ”இரண்டும் கடற்கரைகள் கொண்ட மாநிலங்கள். பருத்தியை அதிகமாக விளைவிக்கிறது குஜராத், அதைப் பெருமளவு நுகர்ந்து ஆடையாக நெய்கிறது தமிழகம். குஜராத்தி காந்தியின் மனசாட்சியாக தமிழகத்தின் ராஜாஜி இருந்தார். தமிழ் மக்கள் குஜராத்திற்குப் புலம்பெயர்ந்து அதன் வளர்ச்சிக்கு உதவுவது போலவே, சௌராஷ்டிரர்களான குஜராத்திகள் தமிழ்நாட்டில் பல காலமாக இருக்கிறார்கள். பாலில் சர்க்கரை கலந்தது போன்ற இனிய உறவு அது. இங்கு சென்னையில் குஜராத்திகள் அதிகமாக வசிக்கும் சௌகார்பேட்டை போல குஜராத்தில் தமிழர்கள் அதிகமாக வசிக்கும் மணிநகர். எனது சட்டசபைத் தொகுதி அது. அங்குள்ள தமிழர்கள் தான் தொடர்ந்து வாக்களித்து என்னைத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்து வருகிறார்கள்” என்று நெகிழ்ச்சியுடன் குறிப்பிட்டார்.

இது ஒரு சாதாரண அரசியல்வாதி பேசும் பேச்சல்ல. இந்த தேசத்தின் மீது, மண்ணின் மீது, காலகாலமாக இருந்து வரும் அதன் சமூக, கலாசார பந்தங்களின் மீது ஆழமான பிடிப்பும், அன்பும் கொண்ட ஒருவரின் பேச்சு. எண்ணமும், செயலும் எல்லாம் இந்த தேசத்தை ஒற்றுமைப் படுத்துவதற்காகவே, இந்த தேசமக்களின் நல்வாழ்விற்காகவே இயங்கும் ஒரு தேசபக்தனின் பேச்சு. எத்தனை உரை எழுத்தாளர்களை வைத்துக் கொண்டாலும் காங்கிரசின் முட்டாள் இளவரனிடம் இருந்தோ, அல்லது மற்ற சுயநல அரசியல்வியாதிகளின் வாயிலிருந்தோ இப்படி ஒரு பேச்சு சுட்டுப் போட்டாலும் வராது.

குஜராத்தின் மீனவர்களை பாகிஸ்தான் பிடித்துச் சென்று சித்ரவதை செய்வதையும், தமிழக மீனவர்களை இலங்கை அதே போன்று செய்வதையும் குறித்து அடுத்துப் பேசினார்.. இந்த நாடுகள் இப்படித் துளிர்த்துப் போய் விட்டதற்கு இடையே உள்ள கடல் நீர் காரணமல்ல, தில்லியில் உள்ள பலவீனமான அரசும் அதன் கொள்கைகளுமே காரணம். இலங்கை அரசு தமிழக மீனவர்களைக் கொல்கிறது. பாகிஸ்தானிய ராணுவம் நமது ராணுவ வீரர்களைக் கொல்கிறது.. பயங்கரவாதம் அபபவியான பொதுமக்களைக் கொல்கிறது, பூடான், இலங்கை, நேபாளம் போன்ற சிறிய நாடுகள் கூட இந்தியாவை மதிப்பதில்லை. இதற்கெல்லாம் காரணமான அந்த பலவீனமான அரசை அகற்ற வேண்டும் – என்று முழங்கினார்.

அமெரிக்கா தனது மண்ணில் அநியாயமாக உளவறிந்து வருவதை அறிந்து, அந்த நாட்டுடனான ராஜரீக தொடர்புகள் அனைத்தையும் பிரேசில் துண்டிக்கிறது. தனது நாட்டின் தேசதுரோகியான ஸ்னோடன் என்பவருக்கு ரஷ்யா அடைக்கலம் கொடுத்ததால், தனது ரஷ்யப் பயணத்தையே அமெரிக்க அதிபர் ஒபாமா ரத்து செய்தார். இதிலிருந்து நாம் என்ன பாடம் கற்றோம்? நமது பிரதமரோ பயங்கரச் செயல்கள் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் போதும் கூட தொடர்ந்து பாகிஸ்தானிய அரசுடன் பேச்சுவார்த்தை நடத்திக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார், அதன் அரசியல் தலைவர்களூடன் உட்கார்ந்து சிக்கன் பிரியாணி சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.. இந்த செயலை நீங்கள் அங்கீகரிக்கிறீர்களா? என்று கூட்டத்தைப் பார்த்து கேட்டார். இல்லை என்று பெரும் எதிரொலி வந்தது.

அடுத்து, காங்கிரஸ் அரசு ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ள பொருளாதார சீரழிவு குறித்து பேசினார்.

narendra-modi-trichy-295“இதே நிலை நீடித்தால் இன்னும் 5 ஆண்டுகள் நீடித்தால் இப்போது நல்ல வேலையில் இருக்கும் இளைஞர்கள் சாலையோரங்களில் பிச்சை எடுக்கும் நிலைக்குத் தள்ளப் படுவார்கள் என்று பொருளாதார நிபுணர்கள் கூறுவதை சுட்டிக் காட்டினார். ”அரசின் தவறான கொள்கைகளால் தொழில்கள் அழிகின்றன. பெரும் வணிக முதலைகளுக்கு உதவும் அரசு, சிறிய தொழில் முனைவர்கள் வாங்கிய கடனைத் திருப்பித் தர முடியாமல் போனால் அவர்களது பெயர்களை செய்தித் தாளில் விள்ம்பரப் படுத்தி அவர்களை அவமதித்து தற்கொலை வரை கொண்டு தள்ளுகிறது. இந்தக் கொள்கைகள் மாற்றப்பட்டு லட்சக்கணக்கான கோடிக்கணக்கான சிறீய தொழில்கள் வளர்க்கப் பட்டு அதன் மூலம் நமது இளைஞர்கள் மதிப்புக்குரிய வேலைவாய்ப்புகளைப் பெற்று வாழ்க்கையில் முன்னேற்றம் அடையும் வகையில் எங்களது அரசின் திட்டங்கள் இருக்கும்.

ஊழல் நமது பொதுவாழ்வை அழிக்கிறது. ஏழை மக்களைச் சென்று சேர வேண்டிய பணம் ஊழலில் வீணாகிறது. ஆதார் அட்டை என்ற திட்டம் குறித்த ஐயங்களை மூன்று வருடம் முன்பே நான் தெரிவித்தேன், அதே விஷயங்களை இப்போது உச்ச நீதிமன்றம் மத்திய அரசிடம் கேட்கிறது. பண விரயம் மட்டுமல்ல, நாட்டின் பாதுகாப்பையே கேள்விக் குறியாக்கும் வகையில் இந்த ஆதார் அட்டை முறைகேடுகள் உள்ளன.

காங்கிரசின் அரசியல் எப்போதும் மக்களைப் பிளப்பதாக, பிரிப்பதாக இருக்கீறது. சாதி, மதம், கிராம – நகர வேறுபாடு என்று பல முனைகளில் தொடர்ந்து மக்களைப் பிரித்தாளும் கொள்கைகளை காங்கிரஸ் செயல்படுத்தி வருகீறது. காங்கிரசைக் கலைக்க வேண்டும் என்று அன்று காந்தி சொன்னதை உண்மையாக்கும் வகையில் நாம் தேசத்திற்கு காங்கிரசிடமிருந்து விடுதலை அளிக்க வேண்டும்” என்றார்.

”இந்த மைதானம் நிறைந்து, அதற்குப் பின்னுள்ள பாலத்தைத் தாண்டியுள்ள மைதானமும் நிறையும் அளவுக்கு இளைஞர்களின் கூட்டம் இங்கு கூடியுள்ளது. அந்த இளைஞர்களை என்னால் பார்க்க முடியவில்லை.. மைதானம் சிறியது, அதில் இடமில்லாமல் போகலாம்., ஆனால் என் இதயத்தில் எப்போதும் உங்கள் அனைவருக்கும் இடம் உண்டு.

தமிழக அரசியலையும் தேசிய அரசியலையும் அறிந்தவர்கள் இளைஞர்களின் இந்தக் கூட்டத்தைப் பார்த்தே இங்கு எவ்வளவு பெரிய மாற்றம் நிகழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கீறது என்பதைக் காண முடியும், பல முறை தமிழ் நாட்டுக்கு வந்திருக்கிறேன்,. இது போன்ற ஒரு இளைஞர் பெருந்திரளை இது வரை கண்டதில்லை, இங்கு வந்த அனைவருக்கும், ஏற்பாடு செய்த இளைஞர் அணியினருக்கும் மிக மிக நன்றி.

நீங்கள் எங்கள் மீது நம்பிக்கை வைத்திருக்கிறீர்கள், அந்த நம்பிக்கையை ஒருபோதும் உடைக்க மாட்டோம் என்று உறுதியளிக்கிறேன். எங்களது சக்தி அனைத்தையும் உங்களது முன்னேற்றத்திற்காக, நாட்டின் வளர்ச்சிக்காக பயன்படுத்துவோம். நீங்கள் எனக்கும் பாஜகவுக்கும் புதிய நம்பிக்கையையும் வலிமை உணர்வையும் ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளீர்கள். வந்தே மாதரம்” என்று கூறி உரையை நிறைவு செய்தார்.

இறுதியில் அனைவரும் முஷ்டிகளை உயர்த்தி வந்தே மாதரம் என்று முழங்கச் செய்தது சிலிர்ப்பூட்டுவதாக இருந்தது.

சிறப்பான நிகழ்ச்சி. அருமையான உரை. தனிப்பட்ட அளவில், மோதி இன்னும் சில விஷயங்களையும் பேசியிருக்கலாம் என்று எனக்குத் தோன்றியது. சேலம் ஆடிட்டர் ரமேஷ் உள்ளிட்ட தமிழக பாஜக தலைவர்கள் பயங்கரவாதிகளால் படுகொலை செய்யப் பட்டது குறித்து கட்டாயம் பேசப்பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். பொன். ராதாகிருஷ்ணன் இலேசாக தன் பேச்சில் இதைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டினார், தமிழகத்தின் மின்சாரத் தட்டுப்பாடு, இலங்கையில் தேர்தல் முடிந்த நிலையில் தமிழர்கள் மறுவாழ்வு குறித்த எதிர்பார்ப்புகள் ஆகிய விஷயங்கள் குறித்து ராஜ்நாத் சிங் பேசினார். அது போதாது. மோதியும் இந்த விஷயங்களைப் பேசியிருக்க வேண்டும்.

மொத்தத்தில் இது ஒரு மிக வெற்றிகரமான நிகழ்வு. மோதியின் திருச்சி விஜயம் கட்டாயம் தமிழக அரசியலில் ஒரு மாற்றத்தைக் கொண்டு வரும் என்றும், மோதி பிரதமராகப் போகும் வரலாற்றுத் தருணத்தில் தமிழகமும் தனக்குரிய பங்களிப்பை நல்கும் என்றும் நம்புவோம்.

“கோபப்படாதே சங்கரகிருஷ்ணா, எல்லாம் உன் பெருமாள் விளையாட்டுதான்” என்று அப்போதும் கிண்டலடித்தார் ராமபத்ரன். “சரி, சரி, பக்கத்துல எங்காவது விசாரிப்போம்”என்று கூறி சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு அவர் சற்று நடந்துவந்தபோது பக்கவாட்டில் பழமையான, சற்று சிதிலமடைந்த கோவில் ஒன்று தென்பட்டது.“வாப்பா, இந்த சாமிட்ட பிரார்த்தனை செஞ்சுட்டு, அந்த சாமியைப் பாக்கறதுக்கு உபாயம் தேடுவோம்” என்றார் ராமபத்ரன். சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனால் தட்ட முடியவில்லை. ஏதாவது வழி கிடைக்குமே என்ற எண்ணத்தோடு, ஏதோ ஒன்று அந்தக் கோவில்பால் அவரை ஈர்த்தது.

அருகே சென்றபோது சிதிலமடையத் தொடங்கியுள்ள அந்தக் கோவில் சிவன் கோவில் எனத் தெரிந்தது. வாசலிலேயே பட்டர், இவர்களுக்காகக் காத்திருந்தவர்போல் நின்றிருந்தார். “வாங்கோ, வாங்கோ” என வாய் நிறைய சிரிப்போடு வரவேற்றார்.“என்னமோ தெரியலை, வழக்கமா பத்து மணிக்கு நடை சாத்திருவேன். ஏன்னா பெரிசா ஒண்ணும் ஆள் வரமாட்டா. உங்களைப்போல பெரிய மனுசா இங்க வர்ரதே அபூர்வம். இன்னைக்கு எம்பையனோட காலேஜ் அட்மிஷன் விஷயமா பெரிய மனுஷா ஒருத்தரைப் பார்க்கணும். என் பையன் வர்ரதுக்காக காத்துண்டுருக்கும்போதுதான் உங்களைப் பார்க்க முடிஞ்சது. எல்லாம் ஈஸ்வர சங்கல்பம். வாங்கோ, உள்ளபோய் சுவாமியை தரிசிக்கலாம்” என்றார் பட்டர்.

அப்போது, சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனைப் பார்த்துச் சிரித்தார் ராமபத்ரன். பார்த்தியா நீ கும்படற பெருமாளே, சிவலிங்கத்தைக் கும்பிட்டாராம்னு கேலி செய்வதுபோல் இருந்தது அவரது சிரிப்பு. இதற்கும் பட்டரின் வார்த்தைகள் மூலமே பதில் வந்தது. “எல்லா பகவானும் சமம்னு சொல்றதே தப்பு. ஏன்னா, பகவான் ஒருத்தர்தான். அவர்தான் நமக்காக பல ரூபங்கள்ல காட்சி தரார். அவா அவா கும்படற சாமி மேல நல்ல பக்தியும் நம்பிக்கையும் வேணும்கிறதுக்காக பெருமாள் சிவனைக் கும்பிட்டார்னும், சிவன் சில இடங்கள்ல பெருமாளைக் கும்பிட்டார்னும் புராணங்கள் சொல்றது. பேதங்களெல்லாம் மனுஷா மனசுலதான். பகவான் ஒருத்தரேதான். அதோட நாம செய்யற நல்ல செயல்களுக்கும், நம்பிக்கைக்கும் ஏத்தாப்பலதான், நம்ம உழைப்புக்கும் தகுந்தபடி பகவான் அருளறார்” என்றார் பட்டர். சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனனுக்கு மட்டுமின்றி ராமபத்ரன் மனதிலும் பட்டரைப் பற்றி உயர்ந்த எண்ணம் எழுந்தது.

தரிசனம் முடிந்ததும் ஆரத்தித் தட்டில் 1000 ரூபாய் போட்டார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். ஆரத்தி ஜோதியை விட அதிகமாக, பட்டரின் கண்கள் ஜொலித்தன. கோவில் பிரகாரத்தைச் சுற்றிவிட்டு மீண்டும் ஈஸ்வரன் சன்னதி நோக்கி சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனும்,ராமபத்ரனும் வந்தனர். அப்போது, பட்டருடன் யாரோ பேசும் சப்தம் கேட்டது.

“அப்பா, இந்த முறையாவது நாம பார்க்கப்போற மாமா, கடன் கொடுத்துடுவாரா?இதுவரை நாலு முறை போயாச்சு!” என்று பட்டரிடம், அருகில் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்த பையன் கேட்டதன் மூலம் அவன், பட்டரின் பையன் என்பது புரிந்தது. “நம்பிக்கையை விடாதப்பா. எப்படியும் ஈஸ்வரன் கைகொடுப்பான். நமக்குக் கொடுப்பினை இருந்தா எப்படியும் 5 லட்சம் கிடைச்சுரும். நீ ஆசைப்பட்டபடி என்ஜினீயரிங் காலேஜ் சேர்ந்திரலாம்” என்றார் பட்டர். “எனக்காக வேணாம்பா, நியாயம், நேர்மை, பக்தி,பகவான் கைங்கர்யம்னு இருக்கற உங்களுக்காகவாவது நமக்குத் தேவைப்படறபோது பகவான் பணம் கொடுத்து உதவ வேண்டாமா? நான் கட்ஆஃப் மார்க் 190 எடுத்திருந்தாலும் டொனேஷன் கொடுத்தாதான் காலேஜ்ல சேரமுடியும்கற நிலைமை எதுக்கு?” என்றான் படபடப்புடன் பையன். “அப்படிப் பேசாதப்பா, பகவான் எல்லாத்துக்கும் கணக்கு வெச்சுருப்பான். அவனண்ட நம்ம பாரத்தை போட்டுட்டு அவனே கதின்னு இருப்போம். நல்லது நடக்கும்” என்றார் பட்டர்.

இருவரின் உரையாடலையும் கேட்டபடியே சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனும் ராமபத்ரனும் அங்கு வந்து சேர்ந்தார்கள். “இங்க பக்கத்துல ஏதாவது மெக்கானிக் ஷாப் இருக்குமா?” என்று கேட்டார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். “சார் அப்போ அங்க நிக்கறது உங்க காரா கவலைப்படாதீங்க சார். பக்கத்துலதான் மெக்கானிக் ஒருத்தர் இருக்கார். நான் சைக்கிள்ல போய் கூட்டிண்டு வரேன்” என்று கூறி பதிலுக்குக்கூட காத்திராமல் சிட்டாய் பறந்தான் பையன்.

சற்று நேரம் நிலவிய அமைதியைக் கலைத்தபடி, ஒரு விண்ணப்பம் என்று இழுத்தார் பட்டர். “அடடா, ஆயிரம் ரூபாயை தட்டுல போட்டதும் பட்டருக்கு பணத்தாசை வந்துவிட்டதா, அவர் பையனுக்குக்கூட காலேஜ் அட்மிஷன் அது இது என்றாரே!”என்ற எண்ணம் சற்று அசூயையுடன் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன் மனத்தில் எழுந்தது. ஆனால்,பட்டர் கேட்ட உதவி, சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனை அசரவைத்தது.

“நீங்களே பார்த்திருப்பேள். இந்தப் புராதனக் கோவில் கம்பீரமா இருந்தாலும், ரொம்ப சிதிலமாயி்ட்டது. நல்ல வருமானமுள்ள கோவில்னா கவர்ன்மென்ட் எடுத்துப்பா,கல்வெட்டு, புதைபொருள்னு ஏதாவது கிடைச்சதுன்னா ஆர்க்கியாலஜியாவது எடுத்துப்பா. ஆனா இது ரெண்டுக்கும் வழியில்லாத கோவில். நீங்க பெரிய மனசோட ஆயிரம் ரூபாய் கொடுத்திருக்கேள்..” என்று சொல்லி தொண்டையைச் செருமிக்கொண்டார் பட்டர்.

“உங்களப் பார்த்தா பெரிய கம்பெனி ஓனர் மாதிரி இருக்கு. நீங்க சொந்தமாவோ இல்ல உங்க கம்பெனி மூலமாவோ இந்தக் கோவிலுக்கு மராமத்து செய்து திருப்பணி செய்யலாம். முடியுமா?” என்று கேட்டார் பட்டர்.

பட்டரின் பண்பான வார்த்தைகள், அவரது சுயநலமில்லாத பொதுநலம் எல்லாம் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணனைக் கவர்ந்தன. “செய்துடலாம் சாமி, கோவில் சுவரைப் புதுப்பிச்சு பெயின்ட் எல்லாம் அடிக்க ஒரு லட்சம் ஆகும்ணு நெனக்கறேன். என் கம்பெனி நன்கொடையா அதைப் பண்ணிடறேன். கோவில் திருப்பணி உபயம் – பெருமாள் பிரசாதம் அன் கோ-ன்னு ஒரு போர்டு மட்டும் வெச்சுக்க அனுமதி கொடுங்க” என்றார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன், சற்று விளம்பர உத்தியையும் மனத்தில் வைத்தபடி.

“ஆகா, பேஷ் பேஷ்! சிவன் கோவிலுக்கு உபயம் பெருமாள் பிரசாதம். ரொம்ப அருமை. அண்ணா பேரு என்ன?” என்று கேட்டார் பட்டர். ‘சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன்’ என்று பதில் வந்ததும் “பார்த்தேளா? உங்க பெயரே, அரியும் சிவனும் ஒண்ணுங்கற பெரியவா வாக்குக்கு ஏத்த மாதிரி இருக்கு” என்று மகிழ்ந்தார்.

இந்த மனிதரிடம்தான் எத்தனை ஞானம், பண்பு என்று வியந்தபடி, “சாமீ, திரும்ப ஒரு தர ஆரத்தி காட்ட முடியுமா?” என்று கேட்டார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். ‘ஓ காட்டிடலாமே’என்று அவர், சுவாமிக்கு ஆரத்தி காட்டிவிட்டு, இருவர் பக்கமும் தட்டை நீட்ட, அதில் கட்டுக் கட்டாய் திருப்பதி கோவிலுக்கு காணிக்கை செலுத்துவதற்காக வைத்திருந்த 5 லட்சம் ரூபாயைப் போட்டார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். “அடடா நீங்கதான் கம்பெனி செலவுல திருப்பணி செய்யறேன்னு சொன்னேளே? இப்போ இந்தப் பணத்தை தட்டுல போட்டிருக்கேளே? இதை எப்படி நான் காபந்து பண்ணுவேன்? நீங்களே வெச்சிருந்து திருப்பணி செய்யுங்கோ!” என்று பதறினார் பட்டர்.

“இருக்கட்டும். இருக்கட்டும். திருப்பணியை என் கம்பெனி செலவுல செஞ்சுடறேன். இது உங்க பையன் என்ஜினீயரிங் காலேஜ்ல சேர நான் உங்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கற காணிக்கை” என்றார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். கண்ணில் நீர்க்கோர்க்க நன்றிகூட சொல்ல முடியாமல் பரிதவித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த பட்டரிடம், “சாமி உங்க பையன் பேரு என்ன?”என்று கேட்டார் சங்கரகிருஷ்ணன். “பாலாஜி” என்று பதில் கூறினார் அந்தக் கோவிலின் பட்டர் பரமேஸ்வர குருக்கள்.

7th Pay Commission announced – Focus on 7th CPC

The central government today announced the constitution of Seventh Pay Commission which will benefit about 50 lakhs central government employees and more than 30 lakhs pensioners all over India.

The Finance Minister after getting approved from the Prime Minister announced the decisions. The recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission are likely to be implemented with effect from January 1, 2016.The Central Government constitutes Pay Commission every ten years to revise the pay scales for its employees and it is implemented with some modifications by some states. This announcement has created a joyous atmosphere among the employees and are eagerly waiting for its details.

50% DA Merge
From now, the longstanding question of merging 50% DA with the Basic Pay stands unanswered and the importance of it is slightly decreased.

Who will be the head of committee
Who will be the head of committee the employees are now awaits the announcement regarding who will head the constitution and its members.

Focus on 7th CPC
In VII CPC the anomaly committee should rectify all anomalies in quick time rather than taking long years.

The merger of 50% DA which was announced in V CPC was not mentioned in the VI CPC . But in VII CPC, employees are expecting the merger of DA and Pay revision in between 10 years.

Final Words
This announcement may trigger in rise in prices right from the vegetable vendor to all other things.

PRESS STATEMENT

Central Government has announced the constitution of 7th Central Pay Commission. Confederation of Central Government Employees & Workers has been raising this demand before the Government right from 2011 onwards and has conducted series of agitational programmes including Parliament March and one day nationwide strike on 12th December 2012.

While welcoming the decision of the Government, we are disappointed to note that our demand for five years wage revision w.e.f. 01.01.2011 and merger of DA has not been considered favourably by the Government. When the public sector employees are given five years wage revision and the erosion in real wages has reached an all time high due to steep price rise, grant of five year wage revision to Central Government employees is fully justified. Similarly every time the Government appointed pay commission merger of DA was also granted. This time Government has not acceded the demand for merger of DA with pay now. Thus by appointing pay commission employees will not be getting any financial benefit now. The demand for inclusion of Gramin Dak Sevaks under the purview of the 7th CPC and grant of merger of DA to GDS is also pending.

In view of the above, the National Secretariat of the Confederation of Central Government Employees and workers urge upon the Government to consider the above demands also favourably failing which the confederation shall be constrained go for further agitational programmes.

ANNOUNCED BY THE GOVERNMENT

Central Government today announced the constitution of the 7th CPC. Confederation of Central Government Employees and workers has been demanding appointment of 7th CPC right from 2011 onwards. We have conducted continuous agitational programmes including Parliament March and also one day nationwide strike on 12th December 2012. After 12th December Strike we have decided to go for indefinite strike and strike ballot is also announced. We congratulate the entire Central Government employees who rallied behind Confederation. Confederation is the only organization which has conducted serious agitation demanding constitution of 7th CPC.

Government has not yet announced the Chairman, Committee members etc of the 7th CPC and also terms of reference. Further our demand for merger of DA, giving effect from 01.01.2011, inclusion of three lakhs Gramin Dak Sevaks under the purview of 7th CPC, granting DA merger to GDS and settlement of other demands in the 15 points Charter of Demands are also pending. Before announcing the terms of reference of 7th CPC. If Government is not ready to accept our above demands, Confederation National Executive will meet shortly and shall decide for further course of action.

Government to set up first separate pay commission for Indian military: NDTV

New Delhi: India’s armed forces are likely to have their own pay panel for the first time since independence.

This comes as the government prepares to set up the seventh Pay Commission to decide on salary hikes for the 50 lakh central government employees, ahead of state polls and national elections due by May. The pay panel’s recommendations are expected to be implemented from January 2016.

All three military chiefs had written to the Defence Minister last year, asking for pay parity with civilian employees. The armed forces have also been demanding the one rank one pension and one rank one pay rule.

They are also pushing for fixing rank pay and fixing pay structure for jawans and junior commissioned officers (JCOs).

In June last year, Defence Minister AK Antony had reportedly written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on "growing discontent among the services personnel due to the anomalies in payment and salaries."

Mr Antony had said that service personnel, ex-servicemen and pensioners were "equally agitated" and suggested that corrective action be taken or "things may take a bad turn."

A month later, the PM set up a four-member committee of secretaries, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, to look into the demands. The armed forces had then objected to the absence of military representation on the committee. Later, some of the anomalies were corrected, and the government had promised a separate pay commission for the armed forces.

Government salaries had been substantially hiked under the sixth pay commission headed by Justice BN Srikrishna. The revised pays fixed the salary of the Cabinet Secretary at Rs 90,000 a month and Secretary at Rs 80,000 per month, while making Rs 6,660 as the minimum entry level salary.

FM: Prime Minister Approves the Constitution of Seventh Central Pay Commission; Recommendations are Likely to be implemented with effect from 1st January, 2016

The Finance Minister Shri P.Chidambaram in a statement said here today that the Prime Minister has approved the constitution of the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

The fourth, fifth and sixth Central Pay Commissions’ recommendations were implemented as follows:
4th CPC 1.1.1986
5th CPC 1.1.1996
6th CPC 1.1.2006

The average time taken by a Pay Commission to submit its recommendations has been about two years. Accordingly, allowing about two years for the 7th CPC to submit its report, the recommendations are likely to be implemented with effect from 1.1.2016.

The names of the Chairperson and members as well as the terms of reference (ToR) of the 7th Pay Commission will be finalised and announced shortly after consultation with major stakeholders.

Cong welcomes constitution of 7th Pay Commission

Welcoming the constitution of the Seventh Pay Commission, Congress on Wednesday recalled that the BJP-led NDA government had “rejected” the legitimate formation of the Sixth Pay Commission in 2003.

Party general secretary in-charge for Communication Ajay Maken’s tweets hailing the pay commission came soon after the government announced constitution of the Commission, which will go into the salaries, allowances and pensions of about 80 lakh of its employees and pensioners.

“7th Pay Commission of Govt employees announced. Except for 6th Pay Commission all Pay commissions are set up in 3rd year of a decade….The government should attract best of talents as its employees. Pay Commissions help in attracting and also retaining best available talents,” Mr. Maken commented on the microblogging site Twitter.

He recalled that the NDA government had rejected the Sixth Pay Commission in 2003.

“NDA rejected the legitimate formation of 6th Pay Commission in 2003.Congress setup 6th Pay Commission in 2005, now again the 7th CPC in 2013,” Mr. Maken said.

Announcing the decision earlier, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said in a statement “Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the constitution of the 7th Pay Commission. Its recommendations are likely to be implemented with effect from January 1, 2016”.

The setting up of the Commission, whose recommendations will benefit about 50 lakh central government employees, including those in defence and railways, and about 30 lakh pensioners, comes ahead of the Assembly elections in five states in November and the general elections next year.

The government constitutes Pay Commission almost every ten years to revise the pay scales of its employees and often these are adopted by states after some modification.

The sixth Pay Commission was implemented from January 1, 2006, fifth from January 1, 1996 and fourth from January 1, 1986.

Subject: Payment of Dearness Allowance to Central Government employees – Revised Rates effective from 1.7.2013.

The undersigned is directed to refer to this Ministry’s Office Memorandum No.1(2)/2013-E-II (B) dated 25th April, 2013 on the subject mentioned above and to say that the President is pleased to decide that the Dearness Allowance payable to Central Government employees shall be enhanced from the existing rate of 80% to 90% with effect from 1st July. 2013.

2. The provisions contained in paras 3, 4 and 5 of this Ministry’s O.M. No.1(3)/2008-E-II(B) dated 29th August, 2008 shall continue to be applicable while regulating Dearness Allowance under these orders.

3. The additional installment of Dearness Allowance payable under these orders shall be paid in cash to all Central Government employees.

4. These orders shall also apply to the civilian employees paid from the Defence Services Estimates and the expenditure will be chargeable to the relevant head of the Defence Services Estimates. In regard to Armed Forces personnel and Railway employees, separate orders will be issued by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Railways, respectively.

5. In so far as the employees working serving in the Indian Audit and Accounts Department are concerned, these orders are issued with the concurrence of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

6. The Hindi version of this O.M. is also issued.

Well, This is my second episode on management consultancy.

Ok, straight to the point, Continuous Improvement is an on-going effort in order to improve products, services or procedures of any organization. The effectiveness or efficiency enhancement can be in terms of cost optimization, better quality, improved customer satisfaction index, quick response time, fast production rate, reduced fault rate, Six Sigma Compliance, electricity conservation and several other domains.

According to management consultants there are three kinds of improvements;

Continuous Improvement: Improvement at a linear rate.

Continual Improvement: Improvement at gradual rate.

Below is the recommended strategy for the Execution of Improvement Process:

1-     Define current performance of Product, Services of Procedure(s).
2-    Identify areas of improvements (suggestions available in first paragraph of this article)
3-    Brainstorm the available ideas

a. Consider Fishbone diagram, Cause Effect diagram. Perform analysis by doing breakdown of bigger problem into smaller problems.

b. Seek feedback and recommendations from Management Consultants

c. Seek advice from Managers, Field Employees, Stake holders, Subject Matter Experts.

d. Consider customers’ / End users’ feedback about quality of products and services.

4-    Make final list of options to execute. Consider associated risks with each execution. Consider Mitigation strategies for these risks.
5-    Execute the options one by one on a small scale in a controlled environment based on risk mitigation strategies.
6-    Prepare the observation register and list down the lessons learnt.
7-    Review the observations with managers, senior management, SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) and stake holders.
8-    Implement the change on large scale and set new standard.
9-    Celebrate and reward.
10-  Go back to Step one for Continuous/Continual Improvement

Road to Improvement- simple steps

Well, This is my second episode on management consultancy.

According to management consultants there are three kinds of improvements;

Continuous Improvement: Improvement at a linear rate.

Continual Improvement: Improvement at gradual rate.

Breakthrough: A giant leap with major changes in a domain or several domains, sometimes executed only once.

PC’s fake encounter with facts

Arrogance blended with self-denial is a deadly cocktail and who better than our Finance Minister can demonstrate the after effects better! The fact that the Finance Minister and the UPA are living in a dream world was evident when he released a statement before going to the National Integration Council meeting, which questioned Narendra Modi’s claims of the economic growth under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s NDA and the economic decline under the present UPA.

Chidambaram asked Modi not to stage ‘fake encounters’ with facts when the truth is that the Finance Minister is fooling the entire nation by giving half-baked facts and incomplete analysis. I ask the Finance Minister five questions that will puncture his attempt to mislead the people of India.

Question 1

Can Chidambaram deny that when UPA took charge (he was Finance Minister even back then), the growth rate of India was 8.6 per cent?

This was the result of a commendable effort of the Vajpayee Government considering the economic mess they inherited in 1998 and the severe economic sanctions by the world community in the aftermath of Pokhran. Placing India’s self respect first and backing it up by a grand vision, the Vajpayee Government left the economy at its peak with the growth rate of 8.6 per cent in 2004.

Question 2

Will Chidambaram also deny that the growth rate for 2012-2013, a year when he was Finance Minister, was barely five per cent?

It is alright to share year by year growth rate figures of the NDA rule Mr Finance Minister but did you bother to check the growth rate of the nation in the last year itself, which stood at a mere 4.98 per cent? How did Chidambaram forget this inconvenient but obvious truth right under his watch?

Question 3

Is Chidambaram aware of the Q4 figure for 2012-2013 and Q1 figure for 2013-2014?

It may be worthwhile to remind our Harvard educated Finance Minister that last quarter growth for 2012-2013 stood at 4.8 per cent and the figure dropped even lower during the first quarter of this year at 4.4 per cent. In fact, Narendra Modi was very kind not to mention the quarterly figures for this year this year, preferring to stick to the Q4 figures of last year, which are marginally better.

Question 4

Is Chidambaram aware of what economic think tanks and independent external agencies are saying about our economy?

It is not only the common man and woman or Narendra Modi that is rightly worried about the economy. Various national and international agencies of repute have expressed concern about the economic gloom prevalent across the nation? If he is not, I would love to enlighten the anti-encounter specialist Chidambaram.

Standard & Poor’s has said that the chances of India’s ratings downgrade look much higher compared to other emerging market economies. Further downgrade would even push it to ‘junk’ status. After the quarterly GDP growth at dismal 4.4 per cent, HSBC forecasted GDP growth for FY14 at just four per cent, a low not recorded since the 1990s. Bank of America went to the extent of saying that there is no hope the government can change things the way they are currently. According to the Reuters report, almost all global banks are skeptical about India’s growth prospects. Is this also the NDA’s doing?

Question 5

Does Chidambaram know where the NDA and UPA stand on job creation?

One of the factors that determine the performance of the Government is the opportunity it created for the people.

NSSO statistics (I presume they were not fudged by the NDA, Chidambaram) clearly suggest that the number of jobs created from 1999-2004 was 60.1 million whereas the figure between 2004-2011 is a poor 14.6 million (the figure for UPA 1, which PC calls the golden period growth is 2.7 million). These figures only speak for themselves!

Thus, instead of setting his own house in order the Finance Minister has done everything else under the sun. Few remember that the economic ruin of India began in 2008 thanks to mindless spending.

When the NDA came to power the growth rate was 4.8 per cent. Today we are yet again close to that figure in 2013 after a golden period starting from 1999, whose efforts were seen in the growth rate during 2003 and 2004.

Do we want to go back to 1997? And by the way, do you know who the Finance Minister that time was…

Senapith the Devotee par excellence

A story of a devotee of LORD VISHNU.

‘Work incessantly, but be not attached to the world’ is the teaching in Bhagavadgeetha. It conveys the precept that to achieve Jnana, one should not run away from his family ties or his earthly position, but he should be in the midst of samsara but should not be tied down to it or depressed by it. In one word he should be like a lotus leaf in water. Bhakta Senanapith stands as a true example of such a life.

Bhakta Senanaith was a barber in Avanthipur. He was born low but he had a great soul. He was blessed with Jnana, bhakti and Vairagya essential qualities required of man to seek moksha. He knew he should not turn out to be a sanyasi, but he should fulfil his duty properly. He had a perfect control over his indriyas, he was totally devoid of the temptations of any man, he had conquered the two evils that usurp man’s reasoning ability-bondage and egoism. He had established Lord Vittala in his heart and he had been performing manasik puja unto the Lord.

One day, it so happened that the Muslim king wanted to have his hair cut. So he sent for Senanaith. But at that time, Senanaith was cut off from the world, lost in his prayer to God. This staunch devotee was bathed in the waters of Santhi, wore the white dress symbolic of peace, decked himself with vairagya, cleaned the temple of heart, situated in the nine doored body, arranged it with the rangoli of vignana, seated Lakshmikanth on the asan of satya, lighted the lamps of compassion, equality and philanthropy, ‘Sravana, manana nidhi dhyanas’ as Arghya padyas offered his purified soul filled with jnana as mahaprasad, a selfless thought as tambula and a feeling of total surrender as harathi. He was thus engrossed in his prayer unifying body, mind and soul.

He was one with God thus when the king’s soldiers came to fetch him. His family members did not want to bring him down to the mundane world from his ecstatic world. So they said that he was away. Relatives are worse than fire. One relative thought it the best time to pull down the image of Senanaith in the eyes of the king. So he took the trouble of going to the king and conveying the message. This angred the king and he ordered the barber to be drowned in the sea.

Will the allmighty living in the heart of his disciple leave him to his fate ? No! He dressed himself as Senanapith, held a bag under his hand and presented himself before the king. The omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, all pervading God dressed himself as an untouchable to be a barber to a muslim ! Can anything be more surprising than this ? He was prepared to do hair cut to a muslim just as a lover stoops down to a low level to please his lady love.

The king’s anger cooled down at the sight of the Lord in the guise of Senanapith. The king and his followers were filled with a special love for the barber ! It’s but natural since it was not the lowly barber before him but the Almighty Himself ! God began the duty of the man he had donned ! He carried on the job of the barber with such a skill that the king was highly pleased with it. Then the servaid maids brought him scented oil in a large silver bowl to be applied to the king. The barber began to apply the oil to the king’s head ! How lucky the king was ! By the holy touch of the Lord, he was cleansed of his petty jealousies and was blessed with a pure heart. What more ! He could see the reflection of his barber in the oil bowl, not the regular face he knew, but the face of the Almighty. He saw him four armed. He was fully decked with various ornaments at his hands and the neck, with a diamond crown on his head, the heavenly sankha and chakra in two arms and with Abhayahasta with a broad chest the seat of Lakshmi devi, broad eyes and a pleasant smile on his face.

The king couldn’t believe his own eyes. He was lost to the world deriving pleasure out of the darshan he had of God until he was requested by his first assistant to have his bath. The king got up and addressed Senanapith – ‘You are so wonderful! I’ve never come across such a person like you. I’ll have my bath and food and come back. In the meanwhile, you too have your food and come back to me’ So saying, he gifted him with a handful of golden coins. God went to Senanapitha’s house, kept them in his cash bag and disappeared.

The king could not forget the godly image he had witnessed in the oil bowl. The feast he had that morning could not beat out the feast to his eyes, before that. He told his courtiers, ‘I have not come across such a pure heart. His leela appears unbelievable to me ! You fetch him to me once again.’

By the time the soldiers came to the house of senanapith, the latter got over ecstatic state and had become down to earth. He heard from his family members that the soldiers had come many times to fetch him.

Initially he was frightened about the anger he would have aroused in God, but his bhakti, vairagya dominated over his fears. He consoled himself thus- ‘Why should I worry ? If the Lord Brahma gets angry over his vahana – Swan, He may stop gong on it but can he deprive it of its innate tendency of separating water and milk ? Accordingly the king may deprive me of my earthly possessions, but can he raise his little finger against the Almighty seated on a throne in the kingdom of my heart ? God is omnipresent, in me, in the king in everything around. If that is the case why should I worry about the anger of the king ? When God is the director of human drama we play, why should we be disturbed over it ? Will the God who accepts my pooja make me suffer in the hands of the king ? God himself had donned the form of Panduranga and had given us these physical forms. A foolish man behaves wisely if he sits on the throne of Vikramaditya. The same way, I thought foolishly, for a second being born in karma bhoomi.’ Thus he drove the darkness of his ajnana through the light of jnana and proceeded on his way. He felt sorry for us human beings. Ironically we treat the real as unreal and unreal as real. The world we live in is maya, while the God who lives beyond it is real but being lost in this maya we don’t find the time or the need to chant the name of god. As if to teach us a lesson he was chanting Anantha, Vaikunta, mukunda, Krishna, Govinda, Damodara, Madhava on his way, The king was delighted to see him as the sunflower at the sight of sun, as the lotus at the sight of moon, the lover at the sight of his lady love. He prostrated before Senanapith and hailed him thus.

‘Oh great man ! I am sorry, I have treated you as lowly all along but today I had an awakening. I am thrilled at your ‘divya darsan’ in the oil bowl. Why don’t you show it to me once again ?’ So saying he sent for such a bowl once again. But no! he couldn’t be blessed for a second time. Senanapith could guess at once what had happened. He was moved to tears at the kindly act of God. ‘Oh Dayasindhu, Deenabandhu, oh Pundarikaksha ! have you come down to do such a menial task for a menial labourer like me ? You can create, sustain and destroy by a mere thought. Inspite of having such great powers have you done my job to display your warmth for me ?

The king too shed tears of joy when he heard that he had the darshan of God. The staunch devotion of Senanapith made him lucky. He could easily get the darshan. Senanaith said, ‘Oh king, you are very lucky. Your parents are blessed souls!’ He felt his bag was heavy and when he looked inside he saw the golden coins given into the Lord by the king. Senanaith cried again.

‘Oh my Lord ! what an irony ! You lord of Goddess Lakshmi are given a few gold coins for the menial job you have undertaken for mysake, your bhakta ! How can I praise your kind’ness and how can I ever express my gratitude to you ?’

Ever since then, the king became Senanapith’s disciple and they have been praying to God together.

Such is the greatness of true devotees of God. God blesses not only those who pray to him but also those who are associated with them.
