Cheering Me OnLosing a loved one is the hardest thing in life, but stories like this really show that they’re still there, cheering us on.

I close my eyes as tight as they can go.

The lights go off, and my imagination switches on. Pictures flash through my mind like an old film from the fifties.

I remember driving home by myself for the first time. Now, I look into the future and imagine that I am walking across the stage to receive my college diploma. The years pass, and I hear my fianc é say “I do.” I look further and listen to the gentle gurgles coming from my baby’s nursery. A smile discreetly appears as memories past and thoughts of the future travel through my soul.

I journey to memories of my high school graduation, and a tear suddenly trickles down my cheek. I look into the bleachers packed with families and friends. I see my parents wrapped in pride, and I look to their side for Katie and Kevin’s approval. But Katie, my older sister, is not there.

My eyes abruptly open as I am snapped back into reality. I remember being called out of Spanish class in tenth grade and taken to the hospital to see Katie, who had cancer, for the final time. It was an excruciating task, but I found the good in Katie’s tragic death.

Katie’s room is exactly the way she left it on a Friday night in September, 1993, when she was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. Her James Dean poster hangs on one wall; her elementary school track ribbons and collection of porcelain masks hangs on the others. Her bed is neatly made and lined with stuffed animals — typical of a girl who would visit her sloppier friends and, without prompting, start vacuuming their rooms.

Katie died just a few weeks into her freshman year at the University of Miami. At eighteen she was 5’5” tall and had straight shoulder length blond hair, big blue eyes, and pale clear skin. Her senior year in high school, Katie was the varsity cheerleader captain and valedictorian.

More importantly, though, she was my best friend. After all, when she was six years old, she had declared herself old enough to take care of her little sister and brand new baby brother, because she thought our mother was not sharing us enough with her. This caring attitude continued throughout her life. Katie would always braid my hair, go shopping with me, and let me go out with her and her friends when I was lonely and bored. Katie would always tutor Kevin, who has a learning disability, when he needed help with his homework. She would continually drill him on his studies until he got it right. Afterwards, she would take him to go get ice cream as a reward. Clearly, Katie was not just our older sister. She was also our teacher, friend, and second mother.

Katie always surrounded herself with friends. She was constantly opening her ears, heart, and arms to someone in need. The phone was constantly ringing and her room was always crowded with people in it. Now, my house is silent.

I realize that getting caught in a pool of depression only leads to drowning. I live by looking for the positive in the worst situations. I now have a relationship with my parents and brother that means everything to me. I know what is important in life, and it is not always partying and getting A’s. But most of all, I know that I can handle anything. Life is not easy, but I overcame one of its toughest obstacles.

I believe, the hardest part of death is the experiences it steals. Katie will not be clapping for me when I finally get my college diploma or giving me advice on my wedding day. My children will only hear stories of the girlhood of their aunt, both stories of reality and an imagined future.

I close my eyes as tight as they can go.

A diploma is placed in my hand. “I do” echoes from a distance. Katie says she loves me and hugs me tight on a September afternoon in 1993. Just before I cross my high school auditorium stage, I look out at the spectators in the bleachers, and I see mother and father and Kevin.

Katie is sitting right beside them, cheering me on.

Available at many health food stores and grocery stores, broccoli sprouts make a great addition to salads, soups, salsa-topped dishes, and sandwiches.

3. APPLES – Studies show that apples possess some extraordinary properties that may provide protection against asthma. One study discovered that pregnant women who ate apples protected their child from developing asthma. Another study found that by drinking apple juice daily children could reduce their chance of suffering from wheezing by 50%. These beneficial effects of apples may be linked to their high concentration of bioflavonoids, such as quercetin. Quercetin is known to possess strong anti-histamine, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. When buying apples, be sure to purchase organically grown fruit: together with peaches, conventionally grown apples top the list of fruits that contain the highest levels of pesticides and other harmful chemicals.

4. BANANAS – Including bananas in your diet may help you breathe easier. According to a British study, children who ate just one banana a day had a 34% lower chance of developing asthmatic symptoms such as wheezing. The results where not surprising considering that bananas are one of the best sources of pyridoxine, commonly known as vitamin B6. Pyridoxine plays a critical role in the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), molecules that have been shown to help relax bronchial smooth muscle tissue.

5. GINGER – one of the oldest spices in the world, is well known for its cold treating powers, but it may also help alleviate asthma symptoms. Its asthma fighting properties are thought to be attributable to gingerols, strong anti-inflammatory substances that also give ginger its distinctive flavor. Fresh ginger, which is said to be the most effective form of ginger, is available year round in the produce section of your local supermarket.

6. SPINACH – Popeye was right about one thing: you’d better eat your spinach! The nutritional profile of spinach makes it an excellent health food and an important functional food to be included in any anti-asthma diet. One study with 68,535 female participants found that women with a high intake of spinach had a lower prevalence of asthma. This is not surprising considering that spinach features a host of important asthma preventing nutrients, including beta-carotene (spinach is one of the best sources of beta-carotene there is), vitamin C, vitamin E, and magnesium. It also has a substantial potassium content in proportion to its calorie content: a 100 calorie serving provides about 40% of the reference daily intake for this important anti-asthma mineral.

7. ROSEMARY – It contains rosmarinic acid, that may help alleviate asthma symptoms due to its strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The antioxidant power of rosmarinic acid is believed to be even stronger than that of vitamin E. In addition, rosmarinic acid encourages cells to create prostacyclins, which help keep the air passages of the lungs open and thus promote easy breathing. Rosemary can be used to flavor fish, roast meats, and tomato sauces, but also fruits, especially oranges.

8. SUNFLOWER SEEDS – are brimming of anti-asthma nutrients, as these mild nutty tasting seeds are loaded with vitamin E, potassium, and magnesium. They are also a good source of selenium, with 1 cup providing more than 1/3 of the recommended daily intake for this important mineral. Furthermore, sunflower seeds are among the seeds and nuts that are least likely to cause allergic reactions in people. But, be careful while consuming them, as they are quite calorie-dense.

9. SWEET POTATOES – are one of the oldest vegetables known to man and one of the most nutritious too. Sweet potatoes are one of the foods that are least likely to cause allergic reactions, which is great news since asthma is often linked to allergies. What’s more, sweet potatoes contain plenty of vitamin C and potassium as well as unique root proteins which, according to preliminary studies, may have significant antioxidant properties. The pink, orange, and yellow varieties are also one of the most concentrated food sources of beta-carotene (the more intense the color, the more beta-carotene).

KALE – This relatively unknown member of the cabbage family is a nutritional powerhouse packed with vitamins and other phytochemicals that have been shown to alleviate symptoms associated with asthma. Not only is kale a great source of vitamin C, it is also one of the most concentrated dietary sources of beta-carotene (kale contains 10 times the beta-carotene of broccoli). Kale can be eaten raw, for example as a substitute for iceberg lettuce in salads. The beautiful green leaves of kale can also be transformed into a savory warm dish by sautéing the leaves and mixing them with chopped onions, crushed garlic and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

In recent years, western medicine has started to pay greater attention to this extraordinary spice. Recent research suggests that turmeric possesses strong anti-inflammatory properties. Although best known for its use in Indian style curries, turmeric can also be used to add flavor and color to fish, seafood, meat, rice, vegetable, and pasta dishes.

12. MUSTARD GREENS – Chock-full of antioxidants and nutrients, mustard greens can make an excellent addition to your diet if you are susceptible to asthma attacks. In addition to being one of the best sources of beta-carotene, they provide a good amount of vitamin C and vitamin E. The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra 
 
The Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra also known as The Gundicha Jatra, Ghosa Jatra, Navadina Jatra
 or Dasavatara Jatra, is the most important 10 days Famous Hindu festival of Lord Jagannath.
 
This annual festival is celebrated on Ashad Shukla Dwitiya (second day in bright fortnight of Ashad month).
This year it commenced on 21st June 2012 and ends on 30th June in Puri, Bhubhaneshwar, Orissa.
 
 
This festival also symbolizes  Lord Sri Krishna meeting his relatives and friends at Dvaraka
 travelling from Kurukshetra after long gap.
 
 
Lord Shri Jagannath is believed the Daaru Brahma – 
The Wooden Prime Soul incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Kali Yug.  
 
 
The very short story in simple form 
 
There are many versions, Traditional, Vaishnavite, Puranic and Sarala dasa Mahabharatha
of Lord Jagannath’s origin . But in most of the versions character of King Indrayumna plays important role. 
 
According to Hindu Mythology Lord Vishnu in Divine form of Imdranila (Blue Diamond)
 establishes himself near a Banyan tree, at Seashore, Puri, during the end of Threta Yuga,
 as the original image of Jagannath.
 
The sparkling rays of this Nilamani has so much power to grant Moksha to the people
 in its vicinity with prosperity to all and including the place.
 
This became a problem to the God Of Dharma, Yama who decided and hides it from the Earth.
 
But the search for the Powerful Nilamani continued till the begining of Dwaparayuga by
  the Malwa King Indrayumna performed staunch and rigorous Penances to find The Nilamani.
 
Pleased with his devotion Lord Vishnu instructed him to go back to Sea shore of Puri, 
to find a Log Of Wood floating on the sea and follow his instructions to carve images
 designed by Viswakarma (Lord Brahma).
 
As said The King found the log of wood and did a yajna from which God Yajna appeared.
He Instructed the King to make fourfold expansion, i.e. Paramatma as Vasudeva
his Vyuha as Samkarshana, Yogamaya as Subhadra
and his Vibhava as Sudarsana of the wood.
 
  Visvakarma, the architect of Gods gave the design to Lord Vishnu. 
And also he made a magnificent temple to house the idols.
King engaged most skilled carpenters to fine finish the would before carving the Idols.
 
But to eveyone’s surprise even the sharpest and strongest of the chisels
  could not even make mark on the wood.
 
 And the worried King summoned all the  Expert carpenters from other places. 
But nothing could be done. 
 
And Lord Sri Maha Vishnu himself approached the King in disguise of a very old carpenter
 and told him that he can cut and carve the wood in to the idols as per the design. 
 
But he put a condition that he would work with the doors of the temple lock closed
 and not to be disturbed till he completes the work in three weeks .
 
The works started and the beat of Chisels carving the wood resounded
 every day and night outside the temple. 
 
But after two weeks the Queen and the King Indrayumna on their routine visit to the temple, 
found the sound of Chisel stopped all of a sudden. 
 
And the queen out of curiosity about the old carpenters health, suspecting he died, 
requested the king to open the doors. 
 
As the King himself much worried took no time in breaking the promise by getting the Doors  opened. 
And when the doors were opened, they found Lord Vishnu at work on carving the Idols.
 
But Lord Vishnu finding the King and queen seeing him doing the work vanished from the site
 leaving the idols unfinished devoid of any hands and feet.

But the Divine  voice of Lord Vishnu instructed King Indrayuman to install the idols.
He told the King that the Idols are equally sacred as they are carved by Him.

The Ratha Yatra is one of the largest processions in the world with 50-foot high ornate 
and decorated wooden chariots seated with Lord Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe, Lord Balabhadra 
and Goddess Subhadra are paraded throughout the city to give Darshan to all their Devotees. 
It is said that those who participate in the Jagannath Yatra in Puri earn their ‘passage’ to heaven.

The 3 towering and royal chariots resemble Lord Jagannath Temple architecture. 
 
Lord Jagannath Chariot, called  ‘nandighose’ is 35 feet high with 18 solid wheels 
 
Lord Balabhadra’s chariot called ‘Taladwaja’ is 33 feet high and has 16  solid wheels 
 
Goddess Shubhadra’s Chariotcalled ‘Devadalan’ is 30 feet high and has 14 solid wheels 
 
Every year New chariots and wheels are made with the same ancient chariot-specifications.

Thousands of devotees pull the chariots by long ropes.
 
 And millions of hands struggle to merely touch the Chariot or pull the rope as it is  believed lucky, pious, holy and prosperous for the devotee.

Sudarsana is seated by the side of Lady Subhadra in Her chariot, Madanamohana sits in the Lord Jagannatha’s chariot, and small Deities of Lord Rama and Krisna take their seats in the Balabhadra chariot. Thus total seven Deities are seated on the three chariots and are pulled by the devotees by the ropes tied to the chariots and taken to the Gundica temple which is about 3 km away from the main temple.

 or Dasavatara Jatra, is the most important 10 days Famous Hindu festival of Lord Jagannath.
 
This annual festival is celebrated on Ashad Shukla Dwitiya (second day in bright fortnight of Ashad month).
This year it commenced on 21st June 2012 and ends on 30th June in Puri, Bhubhaneshwar, Orissa.
 
 
This festival also symbolizes  Lord Sri Krishna meeting his relatives and friends at Dvaraka
 travelling from Kurukshetra after long gap.
 
 
Lord Shri Jagannath is believed the Daaru Brahma – 
The Wooden Prime Soul incarnation of Lord Vishnu in Kali Yug.  
 
 
The very short story in simple form 
 
There are many versions, Traditional, Vaishnavite, Puranic and Sarala dasa Mahabharatha
of Lord Jagannath’s origin . But in most of the versions character of King Indrayumna plays important role. 
 
According to Hindu Mythology Lord Vishnu in Divine form of Imdranila (Blue Diamond)
 establishes himself near a Banyan tree, at Seashore, Puri, during the end of Threta Yuga,
 as the original image of Jagannath.
 
The sparkling rays of this Nilamani has so much power to grant Moksha to the people
 in its vicinity with prosperity to all and including the place.
 
This became a problem to the God Of Dharma, Yama who decided and hides it from the Earth.
 
But the search for the Powerful Nilamani continued till the begining of Dwaparayuga by
  the Malwa King Indrayumna performed staunch and rigorous Penances to find The Nilamani.
 
Pleased with his devotion Lord Vishnu instructed him to go back to Sea shore of Puri, 
to find a Log Of Wood floating on the sea and follow his instructions to carve images
 designed by Viswakarma (Lord Brahma).
 
As said The King found the log of wood and did a yajna from which God Yajna appeared.
He Instructed the King to make fourfold expansion, i.e. Paramatma as Vasudeva
his Vyuha as Samkarshana, Yogamaya as Subhadra
and his Vibhava as Sudarsana of the wood.
 
  Visvakarma, the architect of Gods gave the design to Lord Vishnu. 
And also he made a magnificent temple to house the idols.
King engaged most skilled carpenters to fine finish the would before carving the Idols.
 
But to eveyone’s surprise even the sharpest and strongest of the chisels
  could not even make mark on the wood.
 
 And the worried King summoned all the  Expert carpenters from other places. 
But nothing could be done. 
 
And Lord Sri Maha Vishnu himself approached the King in disguise of a very old carpenter
 and told him that he can cut and carve the wood in to the idols as per the design. 
 
But he put a condition that he would work with the doors of the temple lock closed
 and not to be disturbed till he completes the work in three weeks .
 
The works started and the beat of Chisels carving the wood resounded
 every day and night outside the temple. 
 
But after two weeks the Queen and the King Indrayumna on their routine visit to the temple, 
found the sound of Chisel stopped all of a sudden. 
 
And the queen out of curiosity about the old carpenters health, suspecting he died, 
requested the king to open the doors. 
 
As the King himself much worried took no time in breaking the promise by getting the Doors  opened. 
And when the doors were opened, they found Lord Vishnu at work on carving the Idols.
 
But Lord Vishnu finding the King and queen seeing him doing the work vanished from the site
 leaving the idols unfinished devoid of any hands and feet.

But the Divine  voice of Lord Vishnu instructed King Indrayuman to install the idols.
He told the King that the Idols are equally sacred as they are carved by Him.

The Ratha Yatra is one of the largest processions in the world with 50-foot high ornate 
and decorated wooden chariots seated with Lord Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe, Lord Balabhadra 
and Goddess Subhadra are paraded throughout the city to give Darshan to all their Devotees. 
It is said that those who participate in the Jagannath Yatra in Puri earn their ‘passage’ to heaven.

An interesting information of  Rath Yatra Chariots 
 
 
The 3 towering and royal chariots resemble Lord Jagannath Temple architecture. 
 
Lord Jagannath Chariot, called  ‘nandighose’ is 35 feet high with 18 solid wheels 
 
Lord Balabhadra’s chariot called ‘Taladwaja’ is 33 feet high and has 16  solid wheels 
 
Goddess Shubhadra’s Chariotcalled ‘Devadalan’ is 30 feet high and has 14 solid wheels 
 
Every year New chariots and wheels are made with the same ancient chariot-specifications.

Thousands of devotees pull the chariots by long ropes.
 
 And millions of hands struggle to merely touch the Chariot or pull the rope as it is  believed lucky, pious, holy and prosperous for the devotee. 
 
The whole Rath Yatra moves in a large procession amidst loud beating of percussion instruments, gongs and blowing conch shells.

About the  side Deities on each of the chariot. 
 
Sudarsana is seated by the side of Lady Subhadra in Her chariot, Madanamohana sits in the Lord Jagannatha’s chariot, and small Deities of Lord Rama and Krisna take their seats in the Balabhadra chariot. Thus total seven Deities are seated on the three chariots and are pulled by the devotees by the ropes tied to the chariots and taken to the Gundica temple which is about 3 km away from the main temple.
