ஆயுள் காக்கும் ஆயுர்வேதம்: கை, கால்களில் பயங்கர வலி!

By எஸ்.

ANNADHAANA MAHATMIYAM

Annadhana Mahathmiyam
A tale goes that Once Upon a time there lived a Rich man lived, he used to perform Annadhanam/poor feeding every day. Slowly his wealth started depleting but still he continued his Annadhanam. He was on his death bed, So he called his wife and took a promise that even after his death she will continue the Annadhanam. Then the old man died and his wife continued the good work, but her teenaged son got wild started asking why she is doing Annadhanam and squandering the little wealth they had.  He asked his mother what is the Thatparya of Annadhanam. Mother advises her son to go to a forest and meet the wise sage over there and find out the things which he wants to know. Then the Boy starts his journey to the forest.

It is afternoon and he meets a man near a mango tree. They both introduce themselves and the man in forest tells he is also going to meet the sage, But unfortunately he cannot move even a single step and he is trying to move since so many decades and he is not able to do so. He requests our boy to find out the Parihara from the sage. They were under a beautiful Mango tree which had lot of fruits. Since it was afternoon and boy was hungry. He plucks one Mango and was about to eat then his newly acquainted friend warns that these fruits are Poisonous and not to eat them. The tree felt very bad and started crying that nobody eats the fruit and like a true mother she is feeling bad that none of her child partake the fruit because it is poisonous.  She request the boy to find out the reason from sage.

He starts walking towards the sages hermitage and the night befalls, meanwhile the boy meet’s a hunter and and hunter asks the boy to stay for night with him and then proceeds to hermits hermitage later on. Boy agrees and hunter takes to his house on top of the tree. Hunters wife chides him for bring in a guest to house and says there is only meals for two persons and place for two persons to sleep and she tells she will not sacrifice her luxury of meals and good place to sleep. Then Hunter gives the food to the boy and also asks him to sleep in the house. Hunter sleeps out side the house without having the food. But unfortunately hunter falls down and he is eaten by a tiger.

Next day boy gets up and proceeds to the forest and he is able to reach the hermit. As the sage is a trikala Gnaani he tells to him that he cannot answer his questions, but a son born to the ruler of this Place will answer his questions and He instructs the boy to go to Ruler and tell him that the ruler is going to be blessed with a Male Child and raja asks the Boy what does he wants in return as a boon. Boy tells that once his son is born let him be brought in golden Plate and he will ask three questions to the new born. Then After ten months, the queen gives birth to a beautiful Male child. then the Child is brought to the court in a Golden plate as desired by the Boy.

The boy tells to the Prince that he want, to get three questions clarified including the personal one, but first let the prince answer to the queries of the others first, this shows the boy is not selfish person.  First question he asks regarding the man who was unable to walk. For that prince tells that man is too learned and he has not done Vidya Dhannam to other then tells if does Dhannam, he will be able to move.

For the second question about the Tree Prince tells that there was a rich man who was greedy and a miser and he did not give it to the needy and he has buried the wealth under the tree and since is it sinful money the fruits are becoming Poisonous, If the tree donates it to someone the fruits will become eatable.

Then Boy asks the Prince the Mahatmiyam of Annadhanam, for that Prince asks him to see him properly, but boy says he could not recognise him, for that prince tells he is the same hunter whom he met on the way and since he did Annadhanam of his share of food he is born as a prince, and at the same time a Pig out side the palace has given birth to a piglet and it is his wife who was selfish and because of her deed in past birth she is born as Pig and by virtue of doing Annadhanam one time he attained the birth at Rajas Palace. Such is the power of Annadhanam.

Boy thanks the Prince and proceeds back to tree he repeats what Prince has told and tree asks the boy to dig the Treasure and take it. Then he repeats to the man what Prince has told for him and immediately the man says that he will gladly accept the Boy as disciple and teaches and does Vidya Dhannam. Now the boy is a scholar and wealthy man. He goes back to his mother and continues the Annadhanam which his father did.
The Moral is We should distribute our Vidya,Wealth and Anna. Then only Punya will come.

Jabali Muni.

SarvE bhavanthu sukhinah sarvE santhu niraamayaah
Sarve bhadrANi pasyanthu maa kaschit duhkhabhAg bhavEt.

Brahma Kamal : known as King of Himalayan flower.Botanical name is Saussurea obvallata. The Brahma Kamal is the state flower of Uttarkhand, India.

This flower is very sacred to Himalayan gods. It looks like bliss in the form of a flower. The story goes that once Lord Shiva was in Kailash and Parvati created Ganesha, which was unknown to Shiva. When Parvati went for a bath, she posted Ganesha as a guard outside leaving a word not to let anyone in and that moment Lord Shiva tried to enter the house and Ganesha refused. In anger Lord Shiva cut the head of Ganesha, so there was just the body without the head.On Parvati`s request Brahma created Brahma kamal, with whose help Shiva placed the head of an elephant on to the body of Ganesha.

In Ramayan when the Sanjeevani herb was administered to Lakshman, he miraculously revived. In celebration, God showered flowers from heaven, which fell to the earth and took root in the Valley of Flowers. So it is called Brahma kamal, which is The God’s own lotus, far from the earth!

There is a belief that the Brahmakamal should be gifted, and not bought in the market. To grow the plant, a leaf is planted in the soil (and not a seedling or stem). This leaf then multiplies and becomes a plant to a height of about 4 to 5 feet. The flower itself is around 4-5 inches in diameter and has a lovely fragrance.

This is a still to open bud of the flower. Check how the stem is coming from the leaf. This flowers always grows from a leaf.

God is one

God is one
Once, a saint went to a village.  Some of the villagers came to him and asked, “Oh revered saint, you are a devotee of which God or Goddess?”

The saint said, “The God is one and identical. So, it really does not make a difference whom you worship.”

One of the villagers said, “But, Gods and Goddesses exist in different names. It also so happens that discussions and debates take place to decide who is the best among them.”

The saint said, “Listen to a story. My teacher had told me this from his real experience in life.

There was village like this village of yours. A river was flowing down by the side of the village. Once, some type of germs came flowing in the water of the river as a result of which the villagers fell sick of a peculiar disease. Slowly, their memory started failing. Gradually they realized that their memory will be lost completely. A clever man advised – ‘Brothers, before we forget everything and get completely detached from this world, let us come forward and write on everything their names.’ Everybody started doing that. Names were written on everything. Gradually a time came when people started forgetting the use of things though names were written on them. Therefore, they started writing on everything briefly about their use.

But, before their memory was completely lost, my teacher reached there one day. Seeing this situation, he put a drop of magic water in everybody’s mouth as a result of which all of them got back their memory. After getting back their memory, they were surprised at first for a moment to find the name and its use written on everything. Thereafter, when they came to realize the actual thing, the whole village burst out with laughter.

The saint said, “When man under the worldly illusion started losing its consciousness, he started calling the God in different names. The man without consciousness is dependant on name. One who does not lose consciousness, he understands that God is one and identical. Therefore, why should one give different names to the God? Why not immerse oneself in the state of oneness of the almighty?”

The Gayatri Mantra

The vedic form of the famous Gayatri mantra:

Aum bhur-bhuvah-swah tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dheemahi dhiyo yo nah Prachodayat.

Summary of the Mantra:

May we meditate on the Glory of the Lord, the Remover of pains and sorrows, the Bestower of happiness, Who has created the universe, and Who is the embodiment of knowledge and light. May the Lord, enlighten our intellect in the right direction by destroying all our sins and ignorance.

Meaning of each letter in mantra:

———————————
OM = Almighty God
BHOOR = Embodiment of vital or spiritual energy
BHUVAHA = Destroyer of suffering
SWAHA = Embodiment of happiness
TAT = That (indicating God)
SAVITUR = Bright, luminous, like and sun
VARENIYAM = Supreme, best
BARGO = Destroyer of sins
DEVASYA = Divine
DHEEMAHI = May receive
DHIYO = Intellect
YO = Who
NAHA = Our
PRACHODAYAT = May inspire

———————————

Gayatri is a Mantra(vedic hymn) which inspires righteous wisdom its meaning is that the Almighty God may illuminate our intellect which may lead us to righteous path. This is most important teaching. All the problems of a person are solved if he is endowed with the gift of righteous wisdom. Having endowed with far sighted wisdom, a man is neither entangled in calamity nor does he tread wrong path. Righteous wisdom stars emerging as soon as a methodical recitation of this Mantra is performed.

“May we meditate on the Glory of the Lord, the Remover of pains and sorrows, the Bestower of happiness, Who has created the universe, and Who is the embodiment of knowledge and light. May the Lord, enlighten our intellect in the right direction by destroying all our sins and ignorance.”

The Gayatri Mantra is the form of eternal truth. It is the heart of all beings and the eternal Ved Mantra. Gayatri destroys the sins of the world. All the four Vedas have originated from this mantra:

This can be translated: Aum. Let us contemplate the spirit of the divine of the earth, the atmosphere and heaven. May that inspire our minds. Savitri is the Sun and this mantra is recited at the three junctions or twilight of the day. Here is described how the mantra Aum hums in the base or Muladhara chakra, and moves through seven stages to the chakra above the head Sahasrara.

Maha Vishnu describes Aum as consisting of the following. Bhur is existence, Bhuvah is the elements, Svah is the Atma of everything, Maha is greatness and light, Tat is Brahman (the absolute). Tapah is all knowledge, Satyam is supremacy and internal wisdom. This tantra connects the three letters of Aum to the seven worlds.

Tat, refers to the first cause of all substance, as fire in the circle of the sun and is supreme Brahman. Savituhu is the source of all living beings. Varenyam is the excellent one who receives adoration.

Bharga destroys sin. Devasya means it is full of light, while Dheemahi refers to knowledge being golden and always within the sun. Dhiyo means Buddhi. Yo stands for energy (tejas).

The mantra is divided into three sections of eight letters and four sections of six letters.

A dhyana (meditation) – Gayatri as having four faces, which are white, yellow, red and black. Yet the tantrik tradition has different views of the Gayatri. For example, in the Matrikabhedatantra, there is a couplet, which says a person who knows the Brahman (the absolute) is a Brahmin.

Gayatri is mother of Vedas. Sadhana of Gayatri mantra is the essence of all Vedas. Even God like Brahma mediates on and performs Jap of Gayatri at the time of twi-light.

Gayatri Jap performed daily for three years realizes God and like air, acquires the power of going where the person wants to go. Merely by offering water to the Sun and performing Jap of three thousand Gayatri mantra at the time of twilight, a person becomes adorable by God.

By Gayatri Sadhana the person may get salvation, wealth, victory in battle, and freedom from disease. A man may know all the four Vedas very well but all his labour goes waste if he does not know Gayatri mantra. A person who worships mantra other than Gayatri cannot get success even if he takes millions of birth.

Rishis, Saints say that there is no other mantra like Gayatri mantra in all the Vedas. Ved, yagya, dan (donation, charity), tap are not equivalent even to a small fraction of Gayatri mantra. Whether a man is pure or impure, he is sitting or walking, in whatever condition a wise man may be, he should perform Gayatri Jap. A man gets rid of all sins by this Jap. Nothing is greater than GAYATRI MANTRA in this as well as other loks for the success of daily work; fulfilment of desires and for development of tapas.

The following guidelines are provided for the Sadhaka:

In Bhavanopanishad, one witness within oneself the effulgent figure of Divine Mother with the different phases of the waxing and waning Moon.

The Devi is to be meditated upon as of a ruddy complexion, with eyes expansive, as an ocean overflowing with waves of grace, with noose, goad, arrows of flowers and a twig of sugar- cane in her hand, surrounded by Anima and other deities and ultimately as one´s own self.

1. Complete faith unflinching loyalty backed by a clear heart towards the deity is required for Sadhana.

2. Do not start Mantra Shakti under any pressure. Trust in God, kindness and patience should be the virtues of a Sadhaka.

3. Avoid harsh speech, lust, anger, restless thoughts, evil company and egoism. Do not get emotional. Mantras on hearsay should be avoided, as they must be authentic.

4. Sadhana done without any specific aim bears fruits early. In case you see any miracle, do not fear. Keep your WILL POWER strong and continue your Sadhana. All troubles will vanish.

5. Brahmacharya or celibacy should be observed during Sadhana. In case of failure, do not lose heart. Try it again and again and you will be crowned with success.

HOW MANTRAS ARE USEFUL:

One´s subconscious mind can help to find the solution through meditation and recitation of Mantras.

1.Purity of thoughts, words and deeds, sincerity and deep seated. Belief in repeating Mantras systematically and without any stress or strain on the brain or body is the keynotes for the efficacy of Mantras.

2. Concentrate and Meditate without having any desires in mind. The Mantra should be recited softly so as to be audible only to be person concerned and not to others. Mantras should be recited in a pleasing musical tone, which will help in concentration.

3.Continuous Sadhana will enable the Sadhaka to find solutions to the problems, attaining peace of mind, reducing mental strain.

4.The Sadhaka should have a light meal, hot and well cooked and in small quantity, as over eating leads to the excitement of the sensory organs which aggravate passions. Onions, Garlic and Meat have stimulating effects on the sensory organs and will do harm to the body than good. Intoxicates and smoking of any kind should be avoided. Lack of control in the diet is a great obstacle to progress. Small quantities of wholesome food purify the mind and a pure mind retains the memory of God.

The deity worshipped in the Gayatri Mantra is Savita or the Sun, hence the best day to do this ritual is Sunday. Through this Sadhana one can awaken all mental faculties and gain a sharp intellect and photographic memory. Even a child can be encouraged to try this practice for he can thus go on to excel in his studies and build an excellent career.

Early morning before sunrise have a bath and dress in yellow clothes. Fill a copper pot with water in it drop a few rice grain and flower petals. Face the morning sun. Raise the pot to the heart level and till it forward allowing the water to follow onto the ground gently. At the same time chant the Mantra seven times Udityam Jaatvedase Namah

On it place a steel plate with a handful of rice grains on it. On this plate place Moong grains. Offer red Vermilion; rice grains, red flowers, incense and Ghee lamp on it. Take the Red Hakeek Rosary and put it around the Ratna. Next with water in the right palm and any wish you have to free yourself of any aliments. Let the water drop on the plate before you. Then without any count chant the Gayatri Mantra continuously for about 1 hour. Add at the end of the Gayatri Mantra Ayeim Aum Hum Namah

GET ONES WISHES FULFILLED:

This Sadhana can be done on a Sunday or a Friday from 5 a.m. To 8 a.m. After a bath wear yellows clothes and sits on a yellow mat facing east. On a covered wooden seat make a mound of rice grains dyed yellow. On these place a coconut. Tie a mouli (sacred red thread) around it. Apply a mark of red tilak. On the right side place red rose petals place a Divya and a Shankh. Offer on it incense, Ghee lamp, flowers rice grains, vermilion. Take water in your right palm and pledge your wish. Next Stand on the mat and chant one mala with Cheitanya rosary of this Gayatri Mantra adding to the last part of this Mantra with Shreem Shreem Shreem Shreem Namah.

GAYATRI MANTRA FOR ALL PURPOSES:

Repetitions of the Gayatri Mantra for 125,000 times brings Siddhi. After the mantra has been done for the prescribed number of times, fire worship should be done with 12,000 ahutis of havan samagri with an offering of raw sugar, black sesame seeds (125gms) and ghee (250gms). After the Homa a small feast should be held for 12 girls of 8 years of age and one boy of 6 yrs old. The person after achieving this siddha of the mantra can use to heal physiological or psychological diseases, cure ill lucks and give victory over enemies.

FOR HEALING:

Before touching the patient or giving any medicine, repeat one mala of Gayatri. After completing the mala (108 beads), give the patient medicine for the disease. If the patient is not taking any medication one can give water from a clean copper, brass, bronze or silver pot. Shake the water and repeat the mantra only once before giving the water to the patient. This water will have miraculous effect.

CURE DISEASES:

The sick person should do the japa of Gayatri, after bathing, adding AING three times at the end of the mantra for disease related to aggravation of mucus and bile. Add HUNG three times at the end of the mantra for disease caused by aggravation of wind. The japa should be done 108 times in the early morning hours after bathing.

GOOD MEMORY AND MENTAL POWER:

The japa of Gayatri mantra should be done facing east before sunrise, after bathing. The forehead should remain wet. This is accompanied by applying a thick paste of sandal wood. Gayatri mantra should be recited repeating the sound AUM three times before the mantra. Japa should be done daily 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11 malas. After doing the mala rub both palms together while reciting the mantra, then rub both hands on the forehead touching the place of the third eyes with both ring fingers while the right hand rubs the right side and the left hand the left side of the forehead, reaching up to the temples. Then bring the hands to the head, then to the eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, back of the neck, front of the neck, in that order. This exercise should be done in a slow rhythm. All the breath (no inhaling or exhaling while touching the starting point, third eye) until the end ( the front of the neck).

FOR ATTAINING WEALTH:

At the end of the Gayatri mantra, repeat SHRING, the Lakshmi Bija, three times. 1 Mala (108 times) should be done everyday. All samagris used in worship should be yellow, and yellow food should be taken for the period japa is done. Use a yellow woolen rug, a mala of yellow haldi (turmeric root) beads, yellow pots, yellow flowers, and yellow prasad for offering. A pinch of saffron should be added in the kalash. The japa should be done in the early morning hours before sunrise.

DISPEL EVIL SPIRITS:
An agnihotra (homa) should be done, and 108 ahutis of ordinary havan samagri should be offered to the fire. After the havan is done, the whitish gray ashes should be collected from the fire place and rubbed on the hands, feet, face, head, stomach and back of the person. The Gayatri mantra should be recited during the rubbing of the ashes. The evil spirit will vanish after one rubbing of the ashes. These ashes should be kept in a bottle and maybe used whenever needed by the attendants of the patient. They can be used on any other patients as well. And one should put ashes in ones hand and recite Gayatri mantra 11 times and keep on reciting while rubbing.

SNAKES SCORPIAN BITES:

Ashes from sandal wood or peepal (Banyan wood), should be obtained after doing homa with 108 recitations of the Gayatri Mantra. The ashes should be collected in a blue bottle. One should observe the following method:

  1. Check which nostril is working.
  2. Keep ashes in the hand in the same side as the dominant nostril.
  3. Recite Gayatri mantra, adding HUNG at the end, while meditating on Gayatri riding a horse.
  4. Recite the mantra 11 times.
  5. Rub the ashes while chanting the mantra:
  6. AUM BHUR BUVUH SWAHA TATSAVITRU VARENIYEM
    BHARGO DEVESYA DHEEMAHI DIYO YO NA PRACHODAYAT HUNG.
  7. Keep in another small bottle 10gms of mustard seeds made into paste. Recite the mantra 108 times while making the paste in a stone mortar. This paste should be made and stored like the ashes and used simultaneously or after rubbing the ashes. Take the paste when needed and apply it to the tips of all fingers, all toes, earlobes, navel, tip of the nose and forehead.

This chanting is considered to be especially GOOD on Fridays, on Navami, Chaturdasi, and Full Moon day-and during the nine days of Navaratri.

The Gayatri Mantra does not belong to any particular sect of worship or it is not restricted to any certain community. It is universal, for the whole world. It contains in it the culture not of any particular society, but the culture of humanity. The Gayatri Mantra is a treasure and heritage that belongs to the whole of humanity without exclusion.

Significance of 108

The Indian Subcontinent rosary or set of mantra counting has 108 beads. 108 has been a sacred number in the Indian Subcontinent for a very long time. This number is explained in many different ways.

The ancient Indians were excellent mathematicians and 108 may be the product of a precise mathematical operation (e.g. 1 power 1 x 2 power 2 x 3 power 3 = 108) which was thought to have special numerological significance.

Powers of 1, 2, and 3 in math: 1 to 1st power=1; 2 to 2nd power=4 (2×2); 3 to 3rd power=27 (3x3x3). 1x4x27=108

Sanskrit alphabet: There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.

Sri Yantra: On the Sri Yantra there are marmas where three lines intersect, and there are 54 such intersections. Each intersections has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti qualities. 54 x 2 equals 108. Thus, there are 108 points that define the Sri Yantra as well as the human body.

9 times 12: Both of these numbers have been said to have spiritual significance in many traditions. 9 times 12 is 108. Also, 1 plus 8 equals 9. That 9 times 12 equals 108.

Heart Chakra: The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.

Marmas: Marmas or marmastanas are like energy intersections called chakras, except have fewer energy lines converging to form them. There are said to be 108 marmas in the subtle body.

Time: Some say there are 108 feelings, with 36 related to the past, 36 related to the present, and 36 related to the future.

Astrology: There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.

Planets and Houses: In astrology, there are 12 houses and 9 planets. 12 times 9 equals 108.

Gopis of Krishna: In the Krishna tradition, there were said to be 108 gopis or maid servants of Krishna.

1, 0, and 8: 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.

Sun and Earth: The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth.

Numerical scale: The 1 of 108, and the 8 of 108, when added together equals 9, which is the number of the numerical scale, i.e. 1, 2, 3 … 10, etc., where 0 is not a number.

Smaller divisions: The number 108 is divided, such as in half, third, quarter, or twelfth, so that some malas have 54, 36, 27, or 9 beads.

Islam: The number 108 is used in Islam to refer to God.

Jain: In the Jain religion, 108 are the combined virtues of five categories of holy ones, including 12, 8, 36, 25, and 27 virtues respectively.

Sikh: The Sikh tradition has a mala of 108 knots tied in a string of wool, rather than beads.

Chinese: The Chinese Buddhists and Taoists use a 108 bead mala, which is called su-chu, and has three dividing beads, so the mala is divided into three parts of 36 each.

Stages of the soul: Said that Atman, the human soul or center goes through 108 stages on the journey.

Meru: This is a larger bead, not part of the 108. It is not tied in the sequence of the other beads. It is the quiding bead, the one that marks the beginning and end of the mala.

Dance: There are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.

Pythagorean: The nine is the limit of all numbers, all others existing and coming from the same. ie: 0 to 9 is all one needs to make up an infinite amount of numbers.

We have listed below 108 Upanishads as per the list contained in the Muktikopanishad . We have arranged them in four categories according to the particular Veda to which each of them belong.

Rigveda(10): Aitareya , Atmabodha, Kaushitaki, Mudgala, Nirvana, Nadabindu, Akshamaya, Tripura, Bahvruka, Saubhagyalakshmi.

Gayatri

this may be a repeat but the importance of the same I am reproducing the same

GAYATRI MANTRA & Its Scientific Meaning
cid:1.164294007@web45009.mail.sp1.yahoo.com
Gayatri mantra has been bestowed the greatest importance in Vedic dharma.This mantra has also been termed as Savitri and Ved-Mata, the mother of the Vedas.
Om bhur bhuvah swah
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dheemahi
Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat
The literal meaning of the mantra is:
O God! You are Omnipresent, Omnipotent and Almighty, You are all Light.You are all Knowledge and Bliss. You are Destroyer of fear, You are Creator of this Universe, You are the Greatest of all.We bow and meditate upon Your light. You guide our intellect in the right direction.
The mantra, however, has a great scientific importance too, which somehow got lost in the literary tradition. The modern astrophysics and astronomy tell us that our Galaxy called Milky Way or Akash-Ganga contains approximately 100,000 million of stars. Each star is like our sun having its own planet system. We know that the moon moves round the earth and the earth moves round the sun along with the moon. All planets round the sun. Each of the above bodies revolves round at its own axis as well. Our sun along with its family takes one round of the galactic center in 22.5 crore years. All galaxies including ours are moving away at a terrific velocity of 20,000 mile s per second.
cid:2.164294007@web45009.mail.sp1.yahoo.comcid:3.164294007@web45009.mail.sp1.yahoo.com
And now the alternative scientific meaning of the mantra step by step:
(A). OM BHUR BHUVAH SWAH:
Bhur the earth, bhuvah the planets (solar family), swah the Galaxy. We observe that when an ordinary fan with a speed of 900 RPM (rotations Per minute) moves, it makes noise. Then, one can imagine, what great noise would be created when the galaxies move with a speed of 20,000 miles per second. This is what this portion of the mantra explains that the sound produced due to the fast-moving earth, planets and galaxies is Om. The sound was heard during meditation by Rishi Vishvamitra, who mentioned it to other colleagues. All of them, then unanimously decided to call this sound Om the name of God, because this sound is available in all the three periods of time, hence it is set (permanent). Therefore, it was the first ever revolutionary idea to identify formless God with a specific title (form) called upadhi. Until that time, everybody recognized God as formless and nobody was prepared to accept this new idea. In the Gita also, it is said, “Omiti ekaksharam brahma”, meaning that the name of the Supreme is Om , which contains only one syllable (8/12). This sound Om heard during samadhi was called by all the seers nada-brahma a very great noise), but not a noise that is normally heard beyond a specific amplitude and limits of decibels suited to human hearing. Hence the rishis called this sound Udgith musical sound of the above, i.e., heaven. They also noticed that the infinite mass of galaxies moving with a velocity of 20,000 miles/second was generating a kinetic energy = 1/2 MV2 and this was balancing the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence they named it Pranavah, which means the body (vapu) or store house of energy

(B). TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM:
Tat that (God), savitur the sun (star), varenyam worthy of bowing or respect. Once the form of a person along with the name is known to us, we may locate the specific person.Hence the two titles (upadhi) provide the solid ground to identify the formless God, Vishvamitra suggested. He told us that we could know (realize) the unknowable formless God through the known factors, viz., sound Om and light of suns (stars). A mathematician can solve an equation x2+y2=4; if x=2; then y can be known and so on. An engineer can measure the width of a river even by standing at the riverbank just by drawing a triangle. So was the scientific method suggested by Vishvamitra in the mantra in the next portion as under:-
(C). BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI:
Bhargo the light, devasya of the deity, dheemahi we should meditate. The rishi instructs us to meditate upon the available form (light of suns) to discover the formless Creator (God). Also he wants us to do japa of the word Om (this is understood in the Mantra). This is how the sage wants us to proceed, but there is a great problem to realize it, as the human mind is so shaky and restless that without the grace of the Supreme (Brahma) it cannot be controlled. Hence Vishvamitra suggests the way to pray Him as under:
(D). DHIYO YO NAH PRACHODAYAT:
Dhiyo (intellect), yo (who), nah (we all), prachodayat (guide to right Direction). O God! Deploy our intellect on the right path. Full scientific interpretation of the Mantra: The earth (bhur), the planets (bhuvah), and the galaxies (swah) are moving at a very great velocity, the sound produced is Om , (the name of formless God.) That God (tat), who manifests Himself in the form of light of suns (savitur) is worthy of bowing/respect (varenyam). We all, therefore, should meditate (dheemahi) upon the light (bhargo) of that deity (devasya) and also do chanting of Om. May He (yo) guide in right direction (prachodayat) our(nah) intellect dhiyo.
So we notice that the important points hinted in the mantra is:-
The total kinetic energy generated by the movement of galaxies acts as an umbrella and balances the total energy consumption of the cosmos. Hence it was named as the Pranavah (body of energy). This is equal to 1/2 mv2 (Mass of galaxies x velocity.

HARI SINGH NALWA

Hari Singh Nalwa & Begum Bano

Sardar Hari Singh Nalua, Brave general of Sher-e-Panjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh

Sardar Hari Singh Nalua, Brave general of Sher-e-Panjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

During the times of Sher-e-Panjab, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh Raaj (kingdom) stretched from the Sutlej River to Kabul (in Afghanistan). Raja Ranjit Singh’s key general was Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa, who was a Rehatvan (strictly observant) Sikh of the Guru.

Once, when Hari Singh Nalwa had set up camp with his army in Jamrud in Afghanistan, a local Muslim woman called ‘Bano’ had watched the Sikhs set up camp. She found Hari Singh Nalwa very handsome and attractive, and had the thought that the commander of the Sikhs would be a fine man by which to have a child, hopefully a son.

One day, Bano came to see the General who was sitting in his tent. When his guards told him that he had a local woman who wished to see him, not knowing who this lady was or what she wanted, Hari Singh gave permission for her to enter his tent. Bano said, “I have heard of the Sikhs. You are remarkable people. I have been watching you from a distance. I am not married and have no children, but I desire to have a son who is like you.”

Hari Singh, not understanding the motivation or intention of Bano said, “May Waheguru bless you that you may have a son with the qualities of a Sikh.” Bano irritably said, “No I want to have a son with you Sardar Ji.”

Hari Singh Nalwa replied, “O sister! I am already married. I am sorry I cannot marry you or give you what you want.”

Bano’s eyes welled up with tears of disappointment. About to leave, she said, “I had heard your Guru Nanak was great and that no one leaves empty handed from Guru Nanak’s House, but today I am being turned away without the wish of a son being fulfilled.”

Hari Singh Nalwa, a true example of a Sikh of the Guru, replied, “It is true that no one goes empty handed from Guru Nanak’s House. I cannot give you a son, but if you desire a son who is like me, then instead if you accept, from now on I will be your son, and I will consider you my mother.”

Bano was shocked and overwhelmed by Hari Singh Nalwa’s sincerity, high moral character and faith in the Guru. She said, “I had heard that Sikhs of the Guru are great honorable people, but today I have witnessed it with my own eyes”.

From that day on Hari Singh Nalwa addressed Begum Bano as “Maa” (Mother) and she addressed Hari Singh as “Putar” (Son).

56 delicacies for Lord Krishna (chappan Bhog)

The word Cchappan meaning 56 has a special significance in north India.  It was the number of meals (8 a day) that KR^shNa missed while He was holding up the GOvarddhanam for 7 days (8 X 7 =  56). That is the number of offerings that devotees make to Bhagavaan KR^shNa on special occasions.

The list begins with Rasagulla and goes through Curds, Rice, Poori, Pappadam, etc. and ends in Cardamom.  I wonder if there is such a set list in the southern temples.

56-इलायची ।
Shrimati Usha Gupta who has a cooking blog says this much about this north Indian custom:
WHAT IS ‘ CHAPPAN BHOG’ ?
 IN EVERY HINDU HOUSE A TEMPLE IS THERE AND DAILY WORSHIP IS DONE. WHEN ‘FOOD’ IS OFFERED TO THE GOD, IT BECOMES ‘PRASAD’. WHEN 56 FIFTY SIX COURSE MEAL IS OFFERED TO THE GOD IT IS CALLED ‘ CHAPPAN BHOG’.  WHEN THE DEVOTEES OFFER BHOG TO
LORD KRISHNA ,AND THE  ITEMS LIKE FRUITS,
kHEER, PEDHA, MILK AND MANY MORE.
IN CHAPPAN BHOG, 56 DIFFERENT ITEMS
ARE OFFERED TO LORD SHREE KRISHNA.
“Prasad” is offered to the deity with chanting
of religious prayers. A part of it is put to the lips
of the idol as well.  This is called “Bhog Lagana”.
Some religious hymn is also sung like
“Aao bhog lagao mere Ramji”.
Small portions of the sanctified Prasad or
Prasadam  are offered to all the gathering
who take it in their extended palms…
As far as I Know the story belongs to Lord Krishna.
He used to take 8 meals a day. when he lifted
Govardhan parbat for 7 days he could not eat.
After 7 days when it was over and lord Indra
realised his mistake and surrendered.
People were and happy and offered Lord Krishna Bhojan
for what he had missed during the 7 days i.e. 7 x 8=56 .
so it was called 56 items Chappan Bhog.”
